For the Perfect Lawn
Feature
With spring just around the corner, it’s the time many
of us turn our thoughts to the garden and the lawn.
Some of us may even dream of a lush, green, and
weed-free lawn, but have no time to spare or any idea
how to achieve it. This is where GreenThumb come in.
Now in their 15th year, Ray and Clare, together with
their local dedicated team, provide the perfect
solution. Their aim is to provide you with a wonderful
lawn and exceptional customer service at a price that
is less expensive than doing it yourself.
Their range of seasonal treatments, designed for the
great British weather, is created to deal with whatever
problems your lawn may have. GreenThumb’s
exclusive Nutragreen® fertiliser is a bespoke,
controlled-release, granular, no-scorch formula that
feeds and supports the lawn, so encouraging stronger,
healthier, and thicker lush grass. In addition, seasonal
applications of tailored herbicides will keep weeds
under control.
Whatever Mother Nature throws at your lawn -
whether it's thatch, compaction, lawn pests or
diseases - GreenThumb can help.
Additional treatments include:
• Hollow-Tine Aeration and Scarification to deal
with compaction, thatch and moss;
• Oasis water-conserver treatment to help lawns
from drying out;
• and a Growth Regulator which helps to reduce the
height of grass growth and so thicken it at the same
time.
As an accredited Which Trusted trader, the Milton
Keynes branch of GreenThumb strive to provide
excellent customer service every time. They very
much see this as a long-term partnership between
GreenThumb and you the customer. Clare says: “We
are keen to give customers advice about how to
get the best from their lawn, as well as offering free
advisory visits in between treatments, if customers
ever have concerns. A happy lawn equals a happy
customer!”
If you think you and your lawn may benefit, give
GreenThumb a call and they will be more than
happy to arrange a free, no-obligation survey at your
convenience.
Give GreenThumb a call and they will show you
how your lawn can benefit from their treatments.
Silson AC’s Grand Prix 10K
Entries have opened and are flooding in for
Silson AC’s Silverstone Grand Prix 10k race. This
will be their 35th year of hosting this iconic
race which kicks off the East Midlands Grand
Prix Road Running (EMGP) series. The route for
this race takes in the former grand prix circuit
(now known as the Bridge Circuit), starting on
the main grid and finishing in the Pit Lane. This
memorable event is also open to wheelchair &
handcycle competitors.
Silson were delighted to hear at the beginning
of the year that this race had won an award. The
Silverstone Grand Prix 10k race received a Silver
award for best 10k in the East Midlands from the
Running Awards.
So, why not give it a try and see if you agree
with all those who voted for this race to win
such a prestigious award?
This year’s Silverstone Grand Prix 10k race will
take place on Wednesday 9th May 2018 at
7.30pm.
Old Stratford in
Bloom
Every year lots of
groups from cities,
towns and villages
work to make
greener and cleaner
spaces. This all helps
to make residents
proud of where they live and participate more in the
community.
Old Stratford residents are joining forces to make
this village even more attractive and a place you can
be pleased to live in. Could you help with clearing,
weeding, planting and all the other jobs that are
needed? Maybe you’d like to sponsor a planter?
All the help you can give would be really
appreciated so please give Colin Carey a call on
Pet Services
The Cost of Caring
RSPCA Milton Keynes and North Bucks is a separately registered branch
of the National RSPCA and must raise its own funds to support its work
in the local community, which is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home
stray, injured, abused and unwanted local animals.
In 2017:
• an incredible 754 cats, small mammals and dogs were rehomed
• 382 animals neutered.
Without a dedicated animal rehoming centre it is supported by an
amazing group of dedicated fosterers who care for the animals in their
own homes and volunteers who work tirelessly for the welfare and
benefit of the animals.
To maintain the current level of animal care it costs:
• around £300k per year
• annual vet bills are in excess of £140k.
RSPCA Milton Keynes and North Bucks relies heavily on the generous
financial support of the public and businesses to continue its vital work.
Getting the Massage Across
Is your dog lame, stiff,
or does it need help
getting in and out of
the car or going up
and down the stairs?
Is it slowing on a walk
or quick to tire? Does it
suffer from arthritis or
another orthopaedic
condition? Is it
reluctant to be petted,
groomed, or has its
behaviour changed?
If the answer is yes to any of these, maybe you should
consider clinical canine massage. Just like us dogs get
strains, trigger points myofascial (muscle-related) pain
and will often overcompensate for injury or disease,
causing areas of painful tension. Canine massage
is a non-invasive, complementary therapy which
is naturally effective at reducing pain, improving
mobility and working on stiffness. Focusing on the
body as a whole, the treatment helps enhance your
dog’s quality of life and comfort.
If you would like to make a
donation, fundraise, foster or
rehome a rescue animal please
contact us:
01908 611179
rspcamiltonkeynes.co.uk
Canine massage is available for any dog, no matter
what age, breed, shape or size; it gives results you can
see and your dog can feel.
In association with The Vet Centre, nurse Nicky is
trained in Clinical Canine Massage and offers this
therapy as a practitioner through Kanedu Clinical
Massage. She works from both the Maids Moreton
& Cherry Lane Vet Centres and home visits are also
available. These can be helpful as a good assessment
of your dog’s active daily living area and routine. Your
dog can also benefit from being treated in it's own
home and a familiar environment.
For more information
appointment at both practices)
Well-Being
Climb your Mountain
Snowdon is a truly magnificent
mountain but it can be more
dangerous to climb than Mount
Everest. The steep ascent as well
as changeable weather cannot be
taken on lightly.
Stuart, Holly and their team at
Alchemy have decided to climb it
on 21 April. It’s part of their main challenge - to show their customers,
friends and family that anyone can exercise to stay healthy and promote
well-being. It doesn’t have to be vigorous marathon running, simply
going for a daily walk is a great way of staying well.
As they hike up 1085 metres of the highest mountain in Wales, they’ll
also be raising funds for Willen Hospice.
Show them some encouragement by donating a few pennies to:
Yoga for
Men
Q. What do Gareth Bale, LeBron
James, Novak Djokovic, Robert
Downey Jr and the All Blacks
have in common?
A. They all practice yoga to
improve all aspects of their mental
and physical performance.
The benefits of yoga for men
include:
• Increased flexibility
• Greater muscle strength
• Improved digestion
• Reduced stress
• Greater relaxation
Is it Really Organic?
‘Yoga for Men’ run by The Heart
Yoga Space in Wolverton Park
will appeal to men who want the
benefits of yoga, but feel hesitant
about joining a mixed class.
The trend for using natural products is increasing as we become more
aware of the harmful effects of certain products on the environment and
our health including skincare.
Organic products are not only good for your body but tend to promote
sustainable agriculture and avoid environmentally damaging chemicals.
Beware of products where names suggest they are more natural than
the reality.
Truly organic products are inspired by natural plant extracts and
companies like Neal’s Yard Remedies have gone further banning
silicones, mineral oil, parabens and GM ingredients. They also have Fair
Trade and cruelty-free credentials and were recently awarded 100%
ethical practice. Speak to local consultant Karen Waugh to find out
more 07876 495712.
Other organic skincare products such as Dr Hauska and Weleda can be
bought from Boutique Organic, Stony Stratford.
Wellbeing
Well-Being
Is your backside pain
becoming a pain in the bum?
Buttock pain, hip pain or even “sciatica” as some people
describe it can range from dull and nagging to sharp and
relentless. In some cases, it can significantly affect a person’s
quality of life.
.
This type of pain is often caused by compression of nerves that supply the buttock muscles, so
it will often feel as if the muscles themselves are the cause of the problem; but working directly
on the muscles with stretching and massage usually only offers temporary relief .If the root
cause is ignored the problem usually persists and worsens as time passes.
Essentially Local has teamed up with Towcester McTimoney Chiropractic to offer a great
discount (only £27 normally £55) on our unique and gentle treatment programme for precisely
diagnosing the root cause of your muscle pain and for addressing the damaged area causing
the problem.
Ingredients
115g penne pasta
1 tbs olive oil
85g Kalettes, cut in half
lengthwise
256g yellow squash, chopped
1/2 medium onion, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
256g plum tomatoes
128g shredded mozzarella,
divided
1 egg
2 tbs fresh basil, chopped (or 1
From pale ale to dark stout you’ll be sure to find a
flavoursome tipple to suit every palate at Towcester
Mill Brewery.
They create some of the finest local beers by
experimenting with ingredients, tastes and styles,
mixing in a little imagination and a big dose of
passion. Each ingredient - malted barley, water, hops,
yeast – is carefully selected to ensure it suits the beer.
Some brewers may enhance flavours, reducing natural
sugars and adding others; however Towcester Mill
brewers stay loyal to nature’s way.
The final taste depends on the malted barley, so like
chemists they work their magic - mixing, measuring
and tasting to ensure real harmony throughout the
process. Their decisions and choices will produce the
difference between light, golden or stout beer.
Over a 5-7 day process, starches (sugars) are extracted
from the malted barley and the bitterness oils and
aromas will be taken from the hops. Then as the
yeast is carefully introduced, the conversion to
Recycling Facts
Did you know that every house in the UK produces
over 1 tonne of waste per year and over 55% of rubbish
at home can be recycled?
Plastic forms about 11% of household waste and nearly
half of that is plastic bottles. In fact we throw away
about 9.1 billion plastic bottles every year. Incredibly
it can take up to 500
years for some plastics to
decompose. Recycling
one plastic bottle can save
enough energy to power a
60W lightbulb. Sadly plastic
and other rubbish kills over
1 million sea animals and
fish every year.
How do you
know if it’s the
1) What’s the reason for your investment?
2) Have your circumstances changed?
money?
5) Are you spending too much time watching the news?
Investing should always be for the long term (20yrs+) and your money will
always go up and down. Providing your investment portfolio is aligned to
your objectives, sit back, relax, ignore the news and let your investment do
its thing.
Giving your time is worth
more than your money
It’s now easier than ever to make charitable donations - direct debits or
regular gifts through Just Giving pages. Sometimes though you can’t see
how your money has helped.
Groups and charities in Milton Keynes and surrounding areas may prefer a
small amount of time rather than your money. I volunteer to support Young
Enterprise and Worktree, these groups work with school children to help
them understand adulthood and the world of work. It’s rewarding chatting,
answering questions and seeing the children’s confidence develop as they
discover their right career path.
If you have some spare time volunteer and share your life experience - give
a gift that money can’t buy.
Risk warning: Stock market linked investments and any income from them, can fall as well as rise and is not guaranteed. Any figures
quoted are for illustrative purposes and should not be taken as a forecast or guarantee. Past performance should not be seen as an
indication of future returns and clients may get back less than they have invested.
Make a
positive
difference
with your
investments
If you are passionate about
helping to do good in the world
and at the same time like to
see your money grow, consider
ethical investments.
It’s similar to any other
investments, except you either
invest in companies that are
making a positive difference
in the world or withhold your
money from companies that
aren’t. There are now over 80
specialist investment funds that
invest your money in areas such
as renewable energy, curing
diseases and recycling.
Ethical investing costs no more
than traditional investing and
when it comes to performance,
ethical companies are likely to
be more advanced in terms of
technology and work in areas
that are forward thinking.
As with any investment there
is risk; therefore diversify and
build a portfolio of ethical
investments appropriate to the
level of risk you are willing and
able to take.
One Extreme to Another
Local entrepreneur and businessman Chris Bridgman is taking on
two extreme challenges this year to raise money for the charity
Thames Valley Air Ambulance. Chris is not the sporty type, he
is better known for his hard work and contribution towards the
Wolverton’s community activities and events. These events have
at times challenged him, but this year’s events will be his biggest
challenges to date.
At Easter he’ll be swapping chocolate eggs for a seven-day, 250km
Husky Sledding Trek across the Arctic; camping in temperatures as
low as -30 degrees centigrade. The experience will very physical,
with extreme cold, long hours and tough conditions.
In May he’ll then swap the huskies for a saddle as he cycles 320
miles across France, Belgium and Holland in just three days. He’ll be
cycling over 100 miles a day, burning around 4-5,000 calories a day
and will have to contend with the stresses of the road.
Chris believes in success and his intensive training programme will
prepare himself physically and mentally for this adventure. He’s
doing the hard bit - could you donate to help him achieve what he
thought was not possible?
and worthwhile cause please show
Reduce the Risk
Rogue traders and scammers often target vulnerable
people and those with memory problems – to reduce
their risk follow these simple tips.
Call blocking devices and services - Available
through telephone companies and retailers. Manage
calls with an incoming call ‘white list’ on a free call
blocker for dementia sufferers. For more information
friendsagainstscams.org.uk Reduce unsolicited calls
by registering your number: tpsonline.gov.uk
Automatic shut off devices to stop the gas supply/
cooker if it has been turned on. Similar devices are
available for taps to reduce risk of flooding. Motion
sensor activated lighting will light the way at night to
reduce risk of falls. Buy these devices from a reputable
business.
Buy With Confidence - Check the qualifications of
tradespeople you employ e.g. Gas Safe Registered or
use a robust trader approval scheme such as the local
authority Trading Standards approved trader scheme
buywithconfidence.gov.uk.
Simple Practical Solutions
• Leave a list of trusted emergency contacts by the
phone in case of emergency.
• Post-it notes stuck to the front door can remind your
loved one of appointments.
• Sign-in / out sheet signed by the home dweller and
regular tradespersons can check that services are
actually being delivered, eg the cleaner
• A chain on the front door and no cold calling stickers
can prevent unsolicited callers from knocking and
coming in. Request a person’s identification card
before allowing them in if the visit is unexpected.
Getting Cleaner
Local business Stony Dry Cleaners have been washing,
cleaning and removing stains from our clothes and
household items since 1993. They pride themselves
on using up-to-date techniques & solvents to ensure
the best possible stain removal as well as hygiene.
Owner Stephen Clark explained; “Dry cleaning is more
than just looking good, it’s also about hygiene and
health. Bed bugs, for example, can trigger allergic
reactions and asthma attacks so it’s important to keep
bedding clean.”
Stony Dry Cleaners clean duvets, both polyester and
feather, at 40°C in an anti-bacterial detergent, along
with a fabric conditioner. (Non-bio detergents available
on request). This will kill 99.9% of bacteria including
MRSA & E-coli. If you don’t clean your duvets be
warned - a study found over 20,000 live house mites,
along with their faeces in one duvet. After cleaning
make sure you store you item in a breathable duvet
cover not plastic bags to prevent moisture and mould
growth.
If you spill something or one of your children has an
accident on the duvet, aim to get it to the cleaners as
Feature
soon as possible before
any stain sets in. The other
rule is don’t chop the
cleaning instructions off as
you risk damage to your
items during the cleaning
process.
To get your duvet and
pillow cleaned give Stony
Dry Cleaners a call, prices
depend on what you need
cleaning and how quickly
you need it returned.
Garden veg
of the month
Parsnips are a useful source of
fibre and antioxidant vitamins C
and E. Sow now for a winter crop.
Parsnip seeds have a short shelf
life so always buy fresh each year,
or save your own seed annually.
They can be difficult to germinate,
so sow three seeds at each station
and weed out the smallest if
surplus appear. Best sown direct
into their rows, as they don’t take
kindly to being transplanted.
Some success can be had
sowing into root trainers in the
greenhouse for an earlier crop,
planting out carefully when the
soil warms up.
Asbestos alert
Many people are thinking of renovating sheds and garages at this
time of year and if that includes you please be asbestos aware. From
the 1950s till as late as the 90s asbestos was widely used in building
materials and electrical insulation.
Asbestos is now known to cause serious and sometimes fatal diseases,
including asbestosis and lung cancer. If you find it in buildings in your
garden or in your home, leave it undisturbed and send for professionals
to remove it safely.
Where might you find it?
• Asbestos cement roofs,
panels, gutters, downpipes,
flues
• Asbestos soffits
• Asbestos insulating boards
For concerns and questions about asbestos
Call UK Asbestos 01604 240507
Also sow cabbages, an excellent
source of vitamin C. Choose
your favourite variety and follow
the sowing instructions on the
packet.
Wolverton and Greenley’s Winning
Celebrations
After successfully winning gold in 2017, Wolverton and
Greenleys Britain in Bloom team intends to celebrate
their win and the royal wedding by following the colour
scheme red, white and blue. The team are keen to keep
new volunteers that are interested in:
• lending a hand by planting
• watering
• litter-picking
• and by helping-out in many more ways
Stony Stratford in Bloom
The exciting plans to celebrate SSIB’s 10 year
anniversary are well underway. A new vibrant bed on
Fullers Slade is taking shape and Dominic Harris from
Manor Drives has removed the turf and rotavated.
A £200 award from MK Community Foundation has
enabled SSIB to buy plants and Bunnings Warehouse
donated manure, compost and sand to prepare the
ground. Volunteers and Fullers Slade residents have
already dug the area and planting will begin soon.
This spring and later in autumn the Fullers Slade Youth
Group and Rowans Centre will also get involved.
Other plans include revamping the bed in front
of the Library in Stony with colourful new plants.
Working with the Business Association, SSIB are
agreeing a colour scheme for baskets and planters
for the summer.
Diesel Excise Duty
Increases
Diesel Vs Petrol cars
In the November 2017 budget, the Chancellor
announced an increase to diesel car drivers’ vehicle
excise duty, to take effect from April this year.
The aim is to reduce the dangerous levels of air
pollution in the UK by encouraging motorists to
choose lower emission models and reduce use. It is
believed this will be achieved by increasing the rate
for older and more polluting diesel cars. The increased
taxes will fund the Government’s £220 million Air
Quality Plan.
The exhaust gases are calculated using a standard
European test (Euro 6) showing the average amount
of CO2 produced for every kilometre a car is driven.
The age of the car is also taken into consideration.
Newer models that meet current emissions standards
will, however, be exempt from the higher charge. The
new rules apply to cars and not vans or commercial
vehicles.
To read more go to theaa.com
With changes to vehicle excise duty, environmental
issues and health concerns is petrol now better than
diesel?
• Diesel cars tend be more expensive to buy than
petrol ones.
• Diesel offers better fuel economy for longer journeys
while petrol cars are better for shorter ones and nonmotorway
driving.
• Diesels used to keep better value, modern
technologies are changing this.
• Diesels are good on CO2 emissions but produce
nasties for your respiratory system like nitrous oxide
and hydrocarbons. Petrol is worse for environmental
damage.
• Diesels have been considered cheaper to insure.
• There is no longer a big difference in the price of
vehicle excise duty on new cars.
The 2017 UK Air Quality plan aims to ban the sale
of new diesel and petrol cars in 2040. Alternatives
options are electric or hybrid better still your bicycle!
EVs bring benefits to the people of MK
Last year Skyline Taxis, a taxi firm with bases in Milton
Keynes and Northampton, expanded by investing in a
fleet of electric vehicles (EVs).
The vehicles, which include one Nissan Leaf and three
Tesla cars, are now a familiar sight in Milton Keynes and
already bringing benefits to the town.
To find out more about booking an electric
Skyline taxi, call 01908 222111 or visit
skylinetaxis.co.uk
Gav Sokhi, MD of Skyline Taxis, said: “Not only do Milton
Keynes and the surrounding villages benefit from an
environmental point of view with less carbon dioxide
being pumped out into the air, we are getting a
reputation for being at the forefront of EV technology.
Drivers are also getting more range from their cars
which boosts earnings that go back into the local
economy. Customers are also enjoying the experience.”
