Silson AC’s Grand Prix 10K 

Entries have opened and are flooding in for 

Silson AC’s Silverstone Grand Prix 10k race. This 

will be their 35th year of hosting this iconic 

race which kicks off the East Midlands Grand 

Prix Road Running (EMGP) series. The route for 

this race takes in the former grand prix circuit 

(now known as the Bridge Circuit), starting on 

the main grid and finishing in the Pit Lane. This 

memorable event is also open to wheelchair & 

handcycle competitors. 

Silson were delighted to hear at the beginning 

of the year that this race had won an award. The 

Silverstone Grand Prix 10k race received a Silver 

award for best 10k in the East Midlands from the 

Running Awards. 

So, why not give it a try and see if you agree 

with all those who voted for this race to win 

such a prestigious award? 

This year’s Silverstone Grand Prix 10k race will 

take place on Wednesday 9th May 2018 at 

7.30pm.

The Cost of Caring 

RSPCA Milton Keynes and North Bucks is a separately registered branch 

of the National RSPCA and must raise its own funds to support its work 

in the local community, which is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home 

stray, injured, abused and unwanted local animals. 

In 2017: 

• an incredible 754 cats, small mammals and dogs were rehomed 

• 382 animals neutered. 

Without a dedicated animal rehoming centre it is supported by an 

amazing group of dedicated fosterers who care for the animals in their 

own homes and volunteers who work tirelessly for the welfare and 

benefit of the animals. 

To maintain the current level of animal care it costs: 

• around £300k per year 

• annual vet bills are in excess of £140k. 

RSPCA Milton Keynes and North Bucks relies heavily on the generous 

financial support of the public and businesses to continue its vital work.

Climb your Mountain 

Snowdon is a truly magnificent 

mountain but it can be more 

dangerous to climb than Mount 

Everest. The steep ascent as well 

as changeable weather cannot be 

taken on lightly. 

Stuart, Holly and their team at 

Alchemy have decided to climb it 

on 21 April. It’s part of their main challenge - to show their customers, 

friends and family that anyone can exercise to stay healthy and promote 

well-being. It doesn’t have to be vigorous marathon running, simply 

going for a daily walk is a great way of staying well. 

As they hike up 1085 metres of the highest mountain in Wales, they’ll 

also be raising funds for Willen Hospice.

Baked Kalette Pasta 

Ingredients 

115g penne pasta 

1 tbs olive oil 

85g Kalettes, cut in half 

lengthwise 

256g yellow squash, chopped 

1/2 medium onion, chopped 

2 garlic cloves, minced 

256g plum tomatoes 

128g shredded mozzarella, 

divided 

1 egg 

2 tbs fresh basil, chopped (or 1 

tbs dried basil) 

½ tbs dried oregano 

1/2 tsp salt 

1/4 tsp crushed red pepper 

32g ricotta cheese 

A Matter of Taste 

Method 

1. Heat oven to 200°C. / gas 6. 

Cook pasta according to package 

instructions. Drain and set aside. 

2. Heat oil in a large oven-proof pan 

over medium high for 2 minutes. Add 

kalettes, squash and onion; sauté for 5 

minutes. Add garlic and tomatoes to 

vegetables and sauté for 3 minutes. 

3. Remove from heat and stir in pasta, 

half of the mozzarella, basil, oregano, 

salt and red pepper. 

4. Combine ricotta and egg in a small 

bowl, then stir into pasta mixture. 

Sprinkle remaining mozzarella on top 

of pasta. 

5. Bake in oven for 15 minutes or until 

bubbling and browned on top. 

Kalettes, a cross between kale and 

Brussels sprouts, are highly nutritious 

vegetables, eat raw or cooked. 

From pale ale to dark stout you’ll be sure to find a 

flavoursome tipple to suit every palate at Towcester

mixing in a little imagination and a big dose of 

passion. Each ingredient - malted barley, water, hops, 

yeast – is carefully selected to ensure it suits the beer.

sugars and adding others; however Towcester Mill 

brewers stay loyal to nature’s way. 

The final taste depends on the malted barley, so like

Britain in Bloom is a nationwide gardening competition that 

keeps cities and towns in bloom. Stony Stratford and Wolverton & 

Greenleys in Bloom groups are celebrating 10 years of greening the 

grey and bringing wellbeing and happiness through horticulture. 

Could your imagination and artistic skills showcase the amazing 

floral and community achievements that the teams bring to the 

area? 

We’d love you to enter your work into Artists in Bloom Competition

a gold medal. 

Wolverton and Greenleys in Bloom volunteers and residents 

transform the parish area, making it look blooming marvellous in 

time for the judges' visit in the summer! They too do everything 

they can to involve the local community. Last year their efforts were 

also rewarded with a Gold Award.

An Oasis of Wildlife 

From derelict allotment to an oasis of wildlife and nature - 

Wolverton’s Community Orchard. 

It’s over 15 years since the rubbish was cleared and the site 

developed. What a transformation! The site now offers an 

allotment, sensory garden, wildlife area, over 50 varieties of 

trees and an amazing Dragon Earth Sculpture, created by two 

local artists and students from the Radcliffe School. There is 

also a fantastic refurbished Victorian Railway carriage, used 

during fundraising events. 

The Community Orchard is open to everyone to enjoy, or join 

gardening days on Tuesdays from 9.30am-3.00pm (weather 

permitting) and take a tour to hear about the history of the site.

A Floral Diamond 

Anniversary 

Stony Stratford Floral Club are celebrating their Diamond

One Extreme to Another 

Local entrepreneur and businessman Chris Bridgman is taking on 

two extreme challenges this year to raise money for the charity 

Thames Valley Air Ambulance. Chris is not the sporty type, he 

is better known for his hard work and contribution towards the 

Wolverton’s community activities and events. These events have 

at times challenged him, but this year’s events will be his biggest 

challenges to date. 

At Easter he’ll be swapping chocolate eggs for a seven-day, 250km 

Husky Sledding Trek across the Arctic; camping in temperatures as 

low as -30 degrees centigrade. The experience will very physical, 

with extreme cold, long hours and tough conditions. 

In May he’ll then swap the huskies for a saddle as he cycles 320 

miles across France, Belgium and Holland in just three days. He’ll be 

cycling over 100 miles a day, burning around 4-5,000 calories a day 

and will have to contend with the stresses of the road. 

Chris believes in success and his intensive training programme will 

prepare himself physically and mentally for this adventure. He’s

Wolverton and Greenley’s Winning 

Celebrations 

After successfully winning gold in 2017, Wolverton and 

Greenleys Britain in Bloom team intends to celebrate 

their win and the royal wedding by following the colour 

scheme red, white and blue. The team are keen to keep 

the momentum of their win going and welcome any 

new volunteers that are interested in: 

• lending a hand by planting 

• watering 

• litter-picking 

• and by helping-out in many more ways 

Stony Stratford in Bloom 

The exciting plans to celebrate SSIB’s 10 year 

anniversary are well underway. A new vibrant bed on 

Fullers Slade is taking shape and Dominic Harris from 

Manor Drives has removed the turf and rotavated. 

A £200 award from MK Community Foundation has 

enabled SSIB to buy plants and Bunnings Warehouse 

donated manure, compost and sand to prepare the 

ground. Volunteers and Fullers Slade residents have 

already dug the area and planting will begin soon. 

This spring and later in autumn the Fullers Slade Youth 

Group and Rowans Centre will also get involved. 

Other plans include revamping the bed in front 

of the Library in Stony with colourful new plants. 

Working with the Business Association, SSIB are 

agreeing a colour scheme for baskets and planters 

for the summer.

Diesel Excise Duty 

Increases 

Diesel Vs Petrol cars 

In the November 2017 budget, the Chancellor 

announced an increase to diesel car drivers’ vehicle 

excise duty, to take effect from April this year. 

The aim is to reduce the dangerous levels of air 

pollution in the UK by encouraging motorists to 

choose lower emission models and reduce use. It is 

believed this will be achieved by increasing the rate 

for older and more polluting diesel cars. The increased 

taxes will fund the Government’s £220 million Air 

Quality Plan. 

The exhaust gases are calculated using a standard 

European test (Euro 6) showing the average amount 

of CO2 produced for every kilometre a car is driven. 

The age of the car is also taken into consideration. 

Newer models that meet current emissions standards 

will, however, be exempt from the higher charge. The 

new rules apply to cars and not vans or commercial 

vehicles.

diesel? 

• Diesel cars tend be more expensive to buy than 

petrol ones. 

• Diesel offers better fuel economy for longer journeys 

while petrol cars are better for shorter ones and nonmotorway 

driving. 

• Diesels used to keep better value, modern 

technologies are changing this. 

• Diesels are good on CO2 emissions but produce 

nasties for your respiratory system like nitrous oxide 

and hydrocarbons. Petrol is worse for environmental 

damage. 

• Diesels have been considered cheaper to insure. 

• There is no longer a big difference in the price of 

vehicle excise duty on new cars. 

The 2017 UK Air Quality plan aims to ban the sale 

of new diesel and petrol cars in 2040. Alternatives 

options are electric or hybrid better still your bicycle! 

EVs bring benefits to the people of MK
