Intergenerational
project connects the
unlikely in Glencoe
Megan Bernard, Editor
Jim Pelts, 82, and Mia
Von Varga, a seventh-grader,
have a lot more in common
than they think.
The two were paired
in The Legacy Project:
Connecting Generations
through Story, which was
launched last year by Family
Service of Glencoe.
The organization partnered
with Glencoe Junior High
Project to connect middle
school students with community
elders through the
sharing of stories via interviews.
The project returned
this year and is currently
underway at Central
School.
Von Varga interviewed
Pelts on Thursday, March
8, while recording it on
video. The interview started
out quiet and slow, but
by the time it was over, the
unlikely happened: they
had a lot in common and
shared many laughs together.
The duo connected on
their favorite movie, “The
Greatest Showman,” and
agreed to disagree on
what’s better, a cat or dog.
“When I look at my dog,
I just melt,” said Pelts, a
Glencoe resident, to Von
Varga, who loves her cuddly
cat.
While the conversation
was kept light at first, the
two dove into some serious
topics later in the interview.
“What’s the best thing
about getting older?” Von
Jim Pelts (left) is interviewed by seventh-grader Mia
Von Varga Thursday, March 8, at Central School. The
interview was part of The Legacy Project: Connecting
Generations through Story. Megan Bernard/22nd
Century Media
Varga asked.
“You don’t think of
things so seriously as you
did before when you’re
young,” said a grinning
Pelts, who also shared his
hardest life lesson of coping
with loss and his advice
on life.
“Enjoy what you do every
day because that’s the
most important,” he added.
Pelts participated in the
project this year after a
friend of his asked him to
join.
“I couldn’t turn it
down,” he told The Anchor.
“I thought I’d share
some of my experiences.
They may or may not be
helpful to the kids.”
Von Varga also volunteered
for this year’s project,
which has four junior
high students, including
herself, paired with four
seniors.
“I like the stories,” she
said. “It’s important because
different generations
experience different things
