The project will be up for discussion at the next Village Board meeting Thursday, March 15. With the backing of more than 300 donors and $100,000 ready to invest, the Friends plan to remove a section of the buckthorn and poison ivy that has swallowed the trail and replant with native trees and shrubs. The organization has already cleared invasive buckthorn and poison ivy from other parcels of the trail and planned to begin its next one-acre section this past January. “We had planned to start working on it in January with the Village and the park district but because there’s been some residents that haven’t been happy with our plans, we put it off for now,” said Betsy Leibson, trustee for the Friends of the Green Bay Trail. Neighbors forwarded a petition to the Village on March 1 asking to discuss the plans with the Village, park district and Friends of the Green Bay Trail before moving forward with the project. “We have granted their request to hold off on any action until this discussion,” Villager Manager Philip Kiraly said. Residents adjacent to the trail have expressed concern about losing some privacy because buckthorn provided a shady forested feel to the trail. With its removal will come more sunshine and more exposure to the railroad tracks and neighbor’s yards. Since last March, the Friends and park district have made phone calls, posted fliers, had face-toface meetings and public meetings to discuss the plans with the community and get feedback. The park district handdelivered fliers before the community wide meetings and posted signs on the trail. As a result of those conversations, the Friends added non-native evergreens to their replanting plans in order to add some additional screening. They also added additional “Green Giant” Arborvitae to the original number in the plan. Fraerman said he never even heard about these meetings. Fraerman lives across the trail in the section where the Friends are planning to work. “I decided it was important for the Village to know the community wasn’t necessarily supporting this plan,” Fraerman said. Eighteen households signed his petition. Even though nothing will truly offer as much screening as the buckthorn, the Friends believe in the need for its removal. “The friends and governmental agencies believe strongly the removal of invasive species is essential to restoring natural ecosystem that is a lot healthier and safer,” Leibson said. Buckthorn shades out wildflowers and its poisonous root system prevents native plants from flourishing in the shared soil. The thorny branches are unattractive for nesting and the dense shade provides a hideaway for tomfoolery on the trail. According to the Friends’ plan, once the buckthorn and poison ivy is removed from the acre south of South Avenue, they’re planning on adding back 100 trees and shrubs. The group has fundraised the money with more than 300 people making donations. “We’re sitting on $100,000 that we’re ready to invest,” Leibson said. “But the land is owned by the Glencoe Park District and ultimately they will make the decision if and how to move forward.” Leibson expects the decision will be made by the end of March. For those opposed to the plans, the bottom-line isn’t that they’re trying to save the buckthorn. “I’m not trying to be an obstructionist. I’m trying to do the right thing for my neighborhood,” Fraerman said. “I’m not trying to protect the buckthorn, just trying to protect the look of the neighborhood and I’m not sure we’re seeing eye to eye on that.” Questions about continuing maintenance of the trail once the buckthorn is removed and how much plant material will be replenished still plague Fraerman’s mind. “I don’t have a problem with getting rid of buckthorn — I have a problem with the plan they have to replace,” Fraerman said. “And ongoing maintenance? How are they going to keep buckthorn from returning?” According to the Village manager, the replanting plan is extensive and more comprehensive than sections completed in the past on other parts of the trail. The Friends have also fundraised for a “stewardship plan” to maintain the trail after replanting. “We do anticipate some Village and park district involvement in perhaps in-kind services, such as removal of the buckthorn itself and watering new plants,” Kiraly said. Facilitated by Chuck Hutchcraft, a therapist at Family Service, and Audra Donnelly, GJHP executive director, the intimate group, compared to a larger group last year, has been successful. “It’s more about quality versus quantity,” Donnelly said about the group size. “The students get excited to hear about their different stories. It takes a lot of maturity to volunteer for this. There is no school credit; they are just volunteering to do this on their own.” Bill Hansen, the executive director of Family Service, said in turn, seniors who have participated feel less isolated and lonely. “We have been working on an ongoing assessment for our senior community and how to better serve them,” Hansen said. “We are thrilled to partner together with Glencoe Junior High Project. While we serve different communities, there are still many links between us that we can both help each other with.” Another seventh-grader, Sadie Block, she has enjoyed hearing the stories about what her hometown, Glencoe, used to be like, and what to look forward to in life. “It’s about the little things in life,” Pelts said during his interview. “Don’t always focus on the big things. I get excited for things like this and having pizza tonight.”
