New Trier girls lacrosse preview
New Trier looks to push Loyola in first IHSA season

In October of 2009, the
IHSA approved the sport
of lacrosse becoming an
IHSA sport, contingent of
65 teams playing in the
boys state playoffs and 40
in the girls state playoffs. It
took a number of years to
reach, but the 2018 lacrosse
season marks the first season
the sport is an officially
recognized sport.
“I think the state has always
recognized the level
of play. When it became an
emerging sport, they realized
how much it’s growing
and we needed to set a
minimum number of teams
to have,” New Trier head
coach Pete Collins said.
Collins’ Trevians have
long been one of the best
teams in the state, and often
times, in the country. The
team constantly churns out
college-bound players and
will be tested this season,
having to replace recordsetting
Katherine Gjertsen,
who is playing at Stanford,
and Isabelle Sennett, who
is playing at Amherst.
Gjertsen scored 104
goals and 152 points and
Sennett had 49 goals for a
team that averaged 15 goals
a game.
“Our goal is to improve
our shooting percentage
overall,” Collins said. “Our
shooting percentage for
our team can get better. We
averaged 26 shots a game,
so if we can improve our
shooting percentage and
improve our defense, we’ll
be fine.

Loyola girls lacrosse preview
New-look Ramblers aim for IHSA title

Having to replace 10 seniors
who have moved on
to play at the Division I collegiate
level can normally
be seen as a daunting task.
However, for a team like
nine-time defending state
champion Loyola, while
it may be difficult, it does
have the players coming
back to help ease the transition.
“The way we approach
each year is that it’s a new
team and each team has a
new set of goals, although
the goals never change,”
Loyola coach John Dwyer
said. “This is a team that really
is going to achieve a lot
and we know we may have
to be a little more patient.
We’re very fortunate that
we have some really, really
gifted kids coming back.
“Right now, there’s a lot
of good, healthy competition
for playing time and
we certainly plan on playing
a lot of kids to see what
combination works best.”
The Ramblers return 16
players from last year’s
team and add seven, which
makes for a smaller team
that they’ve carried in the
past, but many of the returnees
have varsity experience.
“The kids that played a
sophomores, and we had
four freshmen who played,
they’re leaders now,” the
coach said.
The team returns four seniors,
but all will be looked
upon to play a role, especially
Riley Dolan, who
will play more of a midfield

are two other sophomores
to watch.
