homerhorizon.com SCHOOL the Homer Horizon | March 15, 2018 | 11 Homer 33C rolls out more robust registration process for new school year Submitted by Homer Community Consolidated School District 33C Homer 33C parents will need to gather a few extra documents when preparing to register their children for the 2018-2019 school year. The district has updated its registration process and is asking all parents, including parents of returning Homer 33C students, to present four documents proving they are residents of the district. All documents must be current (less than 60 days old) and show the parent’s name and Homer 33C address. In the past, parents only had to present three documents. Among the documents parents must present when uploading information into the InfoSnap portal are: • An Illinois driver’s license or state ID with current, in-district address Two of the following: • Utility bill(s) • Vehicle registration • Insurance statement (auto, homeowner, rental) • Medicaid card One of the following: • Most recent real estate tax bill • Mortgage document or statement (dated within the last 60 days) • Signed current lease • Military housing letter • Section 8 housing letter Parents of incoming kindergartners are asked to complete the registration process at Schilling School, located at 16025 Cedar Road, Homer Glen, on Thursday, March 15, between 4:30 and 7:30 p.m. Parents of returning students (students currently enrolled in grades K-7) will receive detailed letters and emails explaining how to complete the registration process online using their child’s snapcode. The letters/emails are to be sent to parents in early April. Those who submit their online registration by April 27 are to receive a $30 discount per student. Those who submit their online registrations April 28-June 8 will receive a $15 discount per student. Full registration fees apply starting June 9. Regular registration fees are as follows: • $155 for grades K-4 • $185 for grades 5-7 • $215 for grade 8 (including a $25 graduation fee) • $35 for Speech and Little Learners • $75 for Early Childhood Pre-Kindergarten and Out of District Families who do not own or rent a home/apartment in Homer 33C’s boundaries but live with another family in the district are asked to complete an affidavit for enrollment. The affidavits are longer and more detailed than previous years, requiring parents to fill out a nine-page form and present three documents, including an updated, in-district driver’s license. In addition, the homeowner will need to complete a fivepage form and present one document and photo ID. Families who do not complete the registration or affidavit process by Aug. 1 may lose their child’s seat, meaning the student may be transferred to another building if a grade level section is overcrowded. 33C Board of Education reviews security procedures Reed School Students of the Month for February were given lawn signs to commemorate their achievement. Photo submitted Submitted by Homer Community Consolidated School District 33C Keeping Homer Community Consolidated School District 33C students and staff safe is going to take more than security cameras, buzzer systems and card readers, members of the Homer 33C Board of Education said. It’s going to take procedural changes, such as never propping doors open and keeping track of who’s in the buildings after hours. “It’s great that community groups are able to come in and use the buildings after hours,” said board member Kevin De- Schaaf. “But we need to make sure we know who’s in the buildings and when.” Just last week, DeSchaaf and Board member Russ Petrizzo were at one of the schools for a Facility Committee meeting in the late afternoon/early evening when they watched a student enter the building and go upstairs without checking in with a staff member or announcing his intentions. “We’re going to have to address that … and make sure our schools are more secure,” DeSchaaf said. The School Board’s Facility Committee has been working with Tria Architects to assess the district’s security conditions and determine what can be done to make the schools even safer. A list of recommendations is expected to go to the full board for consideration later this spring. Among the security features being discussed are security cameras at each school and an external buzzer system that would stop visitors at the main entrance. Currently, visitors can step into a school’s vestibule before they are buzzed in. Petrizzo said he would support arming teachers and staff, as well as implementing fines for those caught leaving a door propped open. “It’s unfortunate, but we’re going to have to do something,” he said. “It’s something we can’t wait on any longer.” Reed School celebrates its February Students of the Month Submitted by Reed School Reed students who demonstrated responsible citizenship throughout February were recently celebrated in a special way. Three students from each classroom were recognized for their outstanding efforts. Students nominated for this prestigious honor demonstrated the three B’s (Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be Peaceful) consistently throughout the month. All students nominated for the monthly award were recognized and celebrated at the school. The District 92 Foundation for Educational Excellence funded the lawn signs for this school-wide project. Homer 33C superintendent search survey now open Submitted by homer community consolidated school district 33C The Homer Community Consolidated School District 33C Board of Education invites the community to complete a survey to assist with its current superintendent search. This survey will be open through Friday, March 16. Community members can share what skills and characteristics are important. School News Moraine Valley Community College Homer Glen man inducted into Alumni Hall of Fame Dr. Jehad Matariyeh, of Homer Glen, is one of four alumni who were inducted into the 2018 Alumni Hall of Fame at Moraine Valley Community College. Matariyeh, the first in his family to attend college, has an Associate of Arts degree from Moraine Valley, a bachelor’s degree in political studies from the University of Illinois in Springfield, a master’s degree in political and justice studies from Governors State University, and a doctorate in educational leadership and administration from Concordia University Chicago. While at Moraine Valley, he was a student trustee and earned a leadership award from the Illinois Community College Board for his leadership and dedication to the Student Advisory Board.
