Francis Road • New Lenox • (815) 485-5976 One Lockport Township High School family’s journey into serving as a host family began with a phone call from Karla Button, Japanese world languages teacher at LTHS. Grace Evans has studied Japanese all four years of high school and, in the spring of 2017, asked if her family would be interested in hosting a foreign exchange student from Japan for the 2017-2018 school year through the exchange service Youth for Understanding. The Evans family quickly decided the experience would be beneficial to all of them, and equally so for an exchange student. After clearance from LTHS and reading numerous profiles, the Evans family came upon the file of a young lady named Ichika Okashiwa. Okashiwa loved American music, movies, choir and studying English. Her profile (host family letter and recorded message) showed that she would be a great fit with the family. After some paperwork, a home visit and interview, the Evans family was excited to hear Ichika would arrive in early August. It was a whirlwind first few weeks for Okashiwa that included day trips, sightseeing and signing up for classes at LTHS. She took it all in stride, and despite jet lag and some language barriers, adjusted quickly. The first few weeks of school were exciting, yet tiring, for her. While English comprehension was tough at first, slowing down speech and using a phone translation application worked well. Now, Okashiwa’s English has greatly improved and sounds much like a typical American teen. While the family was prepared to deal with a student being “homesick,” Okashiwa has not struggled with this at all. LTHS football and Homecoming were among the many “firsts” Okashiwa experienced this past fall. The U.S. holidays were all new experiences for her. He also takes students to volunteer at homeless shelters, arranges student-led interfaith activities and has volunteered for The Evans family welcomed foreign exchange student Ichika Okashiwa into their home for the 2017-2018 school year. Photo submitted Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s with family from other states were celebrated, complete with the typical American traditions. Grace is heavily involved with the LTHS choir program, and Okashiwa was excited to also participate. The LTHS Annual Madrigal Dinner, extracurricular choir and LTHS concerts have been memorable experiences for her. Before Okashiwa returns home at the end of June, a trip to Texas is on their agenda, along with TWIRP, prom and more LTHS choir concerts. While it will be tough to say goodbye, the Evans family is focused on soaking up every opportunity to make great memories. After Okashiwa returns to Japan, Grace will travel to Japan about a month later to take advantage of Okashiwa’s knowledge of her country — a true “cross cultural exchange” experience for both girls. Sanad Social Services, an organization that provides food and clothing for people in need in the Chicago area. Currently, Matariyeh serves on the board of directors for the Mosque Foundation of Bridgeview and the Southwest Interfaith Team. He has served as the Community Iftar Program chair at the Orland Park Prayer Center, has been a member of the Community Economic Development committee in Homer Glen, and a member and treasurer of the statewide Arab-American Anti- Discrimination Committee.
