10 | March 15, 2018 | The winnetka Current news winnetkacurrent.com THE WILMETTE BEACON Car crashes through front window of Wilmette Panera A car crashed through the front window of Panera Bread on March 6 in Wilmette. The driver of the vehicle has been identified as Elaine Joyce, 83, of Wilmette. According to officials, a black Cadillac sedan, driven by Joyce, crashed through the window at approximately 6 p.m. The car landed near the counter. According to the Wilmette Police, Joyce, who was uninjured, was still in the vehicle when they arrived. A 67-yearold female customer was found sitting on the floor in front of the vehicle’s bumper. It was determined that she was near the counter when she was struck by the vehicle and glass from the shattered window. A 38-year-old female customer was also near the counter and fell trying to move away after the glass window shattered inward. “The injuries have been classified as minor,” Wilmette Deputy Fire Chief Robert Brill told The Beacon. “One person was transported to the hospital. Their injury was a minor traumatic lower body injury.” The other patron, along with the driver, were medically released at the scene. A similar accident occurred at the same location in 2007, when a 94-year-old driver hit a parked car before accelerating into the lobby of the restaurant. THE NORTHBROOK TOWER Former trustee calls for Northbrook assault weapons ban Michael Scolaro, a former three-term Village Board trustee who retired from the board last year, said he only had a couple of regrets stemming from his time as a trustee. One of them, he said, was not a vote he made, but one that was not put up for a vote at all. “I listened to people come up and speak to us about an assault weapons ban,” he said. “I thought ‘there’s 300 million guns in the country right now, what is a piece of paper going to do? A piece of paper isn’t going to stop a bullet, it’s not going to make anybody give back a gun, it’s merely a feel-good thing for the do-gooders,’ was my thought.” But with two daughters who work in schools and gun violence around the country, he urged the Village Board to take action. “It’s time for an assault weapons ban in Northbrook,” he said. Scolaro pointed to Highland Park’s assaults weapons ban, which stood up after the Supreme Court rejected an appeal to the ban. Village President Sandy Frum said, however, the decision is not in the Village’s hands anymore. “Unfortunately, we don’t have the ability to place it on the agenda anymore. THE HIGHLAND PARK LANDMARK Highland Park man sentenced to 54 years in 2013 murder One of the three men charged in the 2013 murder of Highwood resident Colin Nutter was sentenced March 2. Philip Vatamaniuc, 22, of Highland Park, was sentenced to 54 years in prison, his attorney LaTonya Burton said. Nutter was found dead of a gunshot wound near the Edens Expressway in Wilmette, close to the Skokie border. According to court documents, Vatamaniuc and two others had planned to rob Nutter after buying marijuana from him. Burton said she and her law partner, Renea Amen, plan to appeal Vatamaniuc’s sentence. In court documents, Vatamaniuc claims he only helped hide the body, but did not take part in planning the murder or robbery. Burton said she and Amen believe that Vatamaniuc’s sentence is unfair because of noncredible witnesses and the fact that Vatamaniuc was not the shooter. She said she hopes the appeal attorney will write an appeal reflective of that. According court records, Benjamin Schenk, of Highwood, and Michael Coffee, of Highland Park, were also involved in the slaying of Nutter. Schenk has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing, while Coffee is awaiting trial. Burton said, as part of Schenk’s plea deal, he offered up information on Vatamaniuc and Coffee. THE GLENCOE ANCHOR Intergenerational project connects seniors, teens in Glencoe Jim Pelts, 82, and Mia Von Varga, a seventh-grader, have a lot more in common than they think. The two were paired in The Legacy Project: Connecting Generations through Story, which was launched last year by Family Service of Glencoe. The organization partnered with Glencoe Junior High Project to connect middle-school students with community elders through the sharing of stories via interviews. The project returned this year and is currently underway at Central School. Von Varga interviewed Pelts on Thursday, March 8, while recording it on video. The interview started out quiet and slow, but by the time it was over, the unlikely happened: they had a lot in common and shared many laughs together. While the conversation was kept light at first, the two dove into some serious topics later in the interview. “What’s the best thing about getting older?” Von Varga asked. “You don’t think of things so seriously as you did before when you’re young,” said a grinning Pelts, who also shared his hardest life lesson of coping with loss and his advice on life. THE GLENVIEW LANTERN Third annual mah-jongg tournament draws largest crowd yet March Madness isn’t limited to basketball. In this instance, the name of the game was mah-jongg and 96 ladies came to the Glenview Senior Center on March 4 to play in its third annual tournament. Twenty-eight tables were set up in The East Wing and, in keeping with mah-jongg rules, there were four players at each table. The tournament was the brain child of Janet Steinberg, program coordinator at the East Wing, and she has seen a significant increase in popularity each year. “We had 50 players the first year and 68 the second year,” she said. “Now we have 96. There are a lot of ladies who love to play.” Mah-jongg is a tile-based game that was developed in China and became popular there in the 18th and 19th centuries. The tiles are adorned with Chinese characters and various designs. The game came to the U.S. in the 1920s, first becoming popular in the Washington D.C. area, and it spread across the country. It is a game of skill, strategy and calculation, and involves a degree of chance. Seemingly once someone gets hooked on mah-jongg, it becomes a lifetime pastime. “I’ve been playing for almost 60 years,” said Sandra Posner. Reporting by Neil Milbert, Freelance Reporter.
