4 | March 15, 2018 | The winnetka Current news winnetkacurrent.com Winnetkans and Northfielders show off St. Patrick’s Day pride Hilary Anderson Freelance Reporter In anticipation of St. Patrick’s Day, everything surrounding Irish faith and culture was on the minds of Winnetkans last Saturday as Sacred Heart Parish celebrated its annual St. Patrick’s Day party. “The tradition is always held the Saturday before St. Patrick’s Day so families can attend the [St. Patrick’s Day] parade downtown,” said Kathy Adler, who cochaired this year’s event with her husband, Rich Adler. “We do not want to compete with it. Some have kids in the downtown parade.” For the first time, the event was a dual parish celebration, as Sacred Heart and St. Philip the Apostle will be uniting as one parish on July 1 as part of the Archdiocese of Chicago’s Renew My Church program. “We refer to our St. Patrick’s Day celebration as a ‘friend-raiser’ and not a fundraiser,” Kathy Adler said. “This year, we are welcoming new friends from St. Philip’s [and] it could not be more appropriate.” The event started with a Celtic Mass, with Irish music sung by the choir. After Mass, piper James Brian played the bagpipes while leading parishioners from the church to the school. A large leprechaun greeted partygoers as they filled the gym, which resembled an Irish celebration hall. JILL DUBAR/22ND CENTURY MEDIA tablecloths adorned with pieces of gold, shamrocks and green necklaces, and streaming above were balloons with Irish flag colors. One side of the room had a large table with Guinness beer, and on the other side were trays filled with traditional Irish fare — corned beef, cabbage, carrots, potatoes and Irish soda bread. During dinner, Brian played bagpipes for the growing crowd. “I enjoy providing this music for whatever the occasion,” said Brian, who is part of the Chicago Highland Rifles and Illinois Police and Veterans Honor Guard. “People are always intrigued by how sounds can come out of the pipes.” Out in the hall, youngsters enjoyed games and face painting, including Karen Wade, 4, who sat still while getting a shamrock painted on her face. Dancers from Glenview’s Sheila Tully Academy of Irish Dance performed, with the clicking sound of shoes against the wood floor proving St. Patrick’s Day is never complete without step-dancing. There was more live music by the Sullivan Brothers, and all evening long, there seemed to be an infinite number of shades of green worn by attendees. Mike Durkin wore a green sweater, hat and shoes, complemented by orange slacks and an orange and green checkered shirt. “I try to attend the Chicago downtown parade each year, but even if that fails, I go to the Irish Cultural Center and eat corned beef and cabbage all week long,” Durkin said. Liz and Niall Cullinane, who are originally from Ireland’s County Limerick and County Galway, respectively, enjoyed the Winnetka version of St. Patrick’s Day. “St. Patrick’s Day was more of a holy day,” Liz Cullinane said. “We went to church, did not go to school and it was the only day we could break the Lenten fast.
