FIGHT OR flight?
They are genes we have but we
usually don’t know which one
dominates the brain until the
unexpected happens.
And when it does you either
stand and fight, make a run for
it, or give up.
Emely van Ras (see page 4,5)
has the fight gene.
And she needed it when she
found an intruder in her house
in the early hours of the morning.
Running was not an option
with young children, asleep, in
the house.
So Emely’s fight gene kicked in.
She took control of the situation,
and let the intruder know she
wasn’t giving in without a fight.
That’s easier said than done,
but it worked, and the suspect is
now in custody.
So what is fight or flight? It’s a
physiological reaction that occurs
in response to a perceived
harmful event, attack, or threat
to survival.
Physiological changes are activated
to give the body increased
strength and speed in anticipation
of fighting or running.
Great stuff Emely.
DRY CHRISTMAS DAY LIKELY
If history is anything to
go by Christchurch and
Wellington are the main
centres most likely to
experience a dry Christmas
Day, while Auckland and
Hamilton are the least likely.
NIWA meteorologist Bell Noll
has studied past Christmases to
get an indication of the weather
for December 25. Christchurch
has experienced just four wet
Christmas Days in the last 30
years.
