Will Todd
Will Todd is in demand both as a composer, and as a
performer and workshop leader. The Will Todd Trio
has performed Mass in Blue around the country and
recorded several CDs, and he is increasingly busy
leading singing workshops with a variety of choirs
across the UK, Europe and the US.
Competition; oratorio Saint Cuthbert, which has been
recorded by the Hallé Orchestra; and music theatre
work The Screams of Kitty Genovese, produced most
recently by Tête à Tête Opera in London and Edinburgh.
His opera Alice in Wonderland for Opera Holland Park
premiered in July 2013.

Mass in Blue is a dynamic, uplifting, and highly popular jazz
setting of the Latin mass. The work features driving grooves
and blues harmonies, with provision for short piano solos
(notated or improvised) and great moments of musical
interplay between soprano soloist and choir.

Passion Music is a concert and liturgical work that continues
Todd’s fusion of jazz and choral music so successfully
blended in his Mass in Blue. The structure highlights
different points in the Passion journey. While some sections
are reflective and expressive, Todd also makes full use of his
understanding of energetic jazz and gospel in this work.

Choral Works Sacred
Will Todd’s flagship work is the jazz mass setting Mass in
Blue, which has been performed over 100 times around
the world since its 2003 premiere. His anthem The Call of
Wisdom was commissioned by St Paul’s Cathedral for the
Diamond Jubilee Thanksgiving Service in June 2012.
Other notable works include the opera The Blackened
Man—a prizewinner in the International Verdi Opera
He has collaborated with award winning choirs The
Sixteen and Tenebrae, as well as with the BBC Singers,
BBC Concert Orchestra, the Hallé Orchestra, the English
Chamber Orchestra, Welsh National Opera, The Bach
Choir, St Martin’s Voices and the Genesis Foundation. He
is currently working on commissions from the UK, the
Netherlands, the US, and Canada.

This radiant anthem was commissioned as part of Queen
Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations. Setting a
text adapted from Proverbs 8 by Michael Hampel, Todd
employs arching melodies and beautiful harmonies that
are underpinned by a gentle accompaniment.

Locus iste is an atmospheric setting of a well-known
Latin text. With an ever-changing time signature, Todd’s
writing is gentle but effective; the mysterious piano
accompaniment combined with the dissonant harmonies

an ethereal world.

With a text by the composer, this is a beautiful piece about
optimism, companionship, and the belief that ‘all will be
well’. Todd’s gentle melodies are supported by a delicate,
pulsing piano accompaniment, and an optional percussion
part (snare drum, bass drum, and cymbal) that adds extra
spark to the music. Originally published in The Oxford Book
of Flexible Choral Songs.
