Magna Carta
The Magna Carta was a charter issued by King John of England in 1215. The charter was issued as a
response to rebelling barons who wanted protection of their rights in exchange for their continued
loyalty and support of England. King John agreed to the terms of the charter in order to achieve peace
and loyalty from the barons. It was significant in its protection of basic individual liberties, even
against the king.
➟
➟
Influence of earlier documents on the
Constitution of the United States…
It gave Englishmen basic rights and freedoms.
It established (for the first time!) the principle that everyone, including the king, was
subject to the law. Today, this concept is commonly referred to as “rule of law.”
Charters of the Virginia Company of London
The Charters of the Virginia Company of London were issued by King James I in 1606. In the charters,
the king gave the Virginia Company the right to establish a settlement in North America and defined
the physical boundaries of the colony.
Sample
A significant detail is the charters guaranteed the rights of
Englishmen to the colonists. Knowing
they would still have English rights was a
significant factor in being able to convince
people to come to America. Later, this
influenced the start of the revolutionary
movement when colonists felt their
English rights were being violated by the
king and parliament.
All and every the persons,
being our Subjects, which shall
dwell and inhabit within every or any
of the several Colonies and Plantations,
and every of their children... shall have
and enjoy all Liberties, Franchises,
and Immunities... as if they had been
abiding and born, within this our
realm of England.
