Declaration of Independence<br />

The Second Continental Congress was held in 1775. There, representatives from the American<br />

colonies met to discuss whether or not to break away from England and become an independent<br />

nation. The decision was YES. The committee assigned Thomas Jefferson to write the original draft of<br />

the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration was adopted on July 4, 1776. The Declaration was<br />

Fascinating Fact<br />

England and Scotland formed the Kingdoms of Great Britain in 1707.<br />

It stated grievances against the king of Great Britain.<br />

It declared the colonies’ independence from Great Britain.<br />

It affirmed “certain unalienable rights.” These rights are life,<br />

liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.<br />

It affirmed the idea that all people are created equal.<br />
