Problem-Solution<br />

During the 1960s, many people criticized the way of calling people to serve in the armed<br />

forces. Some people believed poor men were “drafted” more often than middle or upper-class<br />

males. Some men moved to foreign countries to avoid being drafted. Others burned their<br />

draft cards.<br />

During America’s heaviest military involvement in the Vietnam War, from 1965 to 1973, about<br />

1,700,000 men were drafted. Many of these men felt that it was their civic duty to serve in the<br />

armed forces when called. About 58,000 Americans died serving their country during this time.<br />
