New facilities
possible at
Harewood park
• By Julia Evans
THE INCREASING popularity
of a Harewood reserve has
prompted an investigation into
expanding its facilities.
The Fendalton-Waimairi-
Harewood Community Board
asked city council staff for
information on what toilet and
changing facilities are planned
for Roto Kohatu Reserve.
City council acting manager
regional parks Paul Devlin said
$2.9 million is proposed to be
spent on the renewal of existing
park-wide facilities within Roto
Kohatu Reserve, Otukaikino
and The Groynes in the 2018-28
draft Long Term Plan.
Some of that budget will also
be spent on new facilities at each
site “as approved through the
future master plan process,” Mr
Devlin said. There is a man-made
lake at the Sawyers Arms Rd
reserve, which is a popular spot
for recreational users, such as jet
skis and boats.
Last year the city council had
to expand the size of the car park
and entrance at the reserve due
to its increased use. An update
from staff would go back to the
board detailing plans to expand
the facilities at an upcoming
board meeting.
But Ms Weston said that would not
be happening.
“Our investigations have concluded
that there has been no breach
of the freedom camping bylaw,” Ms
Weston said.
However, Mr
MacDonald said he
would not be letting
the issue go. He
said it’s of “national
significance.”
“I’ll keep pestering
the city council
until it acts and
they’re gone,” he
said.
Mr MacDonald said the campers
are there most nights and leave again
in the morning, which is unsettling
for residents who are worried about
local amenities not being respected.
Mr MacDonald said the biggest
concern was the fact the campers are
parking up outside a cemetery.
“It’s incredibly important we
protect local amenities for ratepayers
and continue to value and show
respect for the significance of this
cemetery in our local community,”
he said.
He said there had also been signs
of litter, which was not respectful of
the amenity.
The cemetery was opened in 1909
and has nearly reached capacity.
