KIDS YOGA
The Body is a Temple
Pet of the week
Every man is the builder
of a temple called his body.
-Henry David Thoreau
We are learning more each
day about our body’s innate
ability to heal itself. With
the integration of eastern
and western medicine we
are given the capability to
achieve overall well-being by
looking within and creating
self-awareness. Many believe
that this inner awareness can
alter our inner network which
is full of energy and constantly
changing. We have all heard
stories of unexpected healing,
a cancer case in remission, or
the tumor that is just — gone!
Self-control may play a hand
in this concept. Can a patient’s
condition and recovery
really depend on their state of
awareness and the power of
positive thinking? Well many
including myself believe this
to be true. So how can we begin
this practice and how can
we teach our children to begin
to relax naturally. I suggest
you begin with a yoga and
meditation practice. Meditation
is a form of self-therapy.
It is simply finding that quiet
spot within and it works
because the silence actually
awakens our self-awareness.
It is during this awareness we
acquire bursts of inspiration,
tender feelings of compassion,
and empathy, and a sense of
love. These fragile emotions
can very easily be disregarded
or drowned out by the
distraction, confusion, and
incessant internal dialogue in
our minds or the business in
our days. We have all had this
happen: while driving down
the street we pass the turn we
take every day or the moment
we realize we just missed an
entire conversation while sitting
next to the person speaking.
It is in these moments
that we must stop and take a
breath. It is helpful to select
a mantra, a word or group of
words, to repeat during this
meditation moment. Maybe
“I am peaceful! I am loving! I
am kind! It brings us back to
the present. Meditation can
last for two minutes to two
hours. So what I am trying to
tell you is this…Meditation
and yoga are techniques that
can be utilized to correct the
imbalances that occur when
our bodies are in distress and
they can help to create both
a clean and uncluttered body
and mind. That seems like
a pretty good thing to share
with the kids in your life.
One-year-old Papa is a handsome and friendly lab, hound, and
pitbull mix. Papa enjoys going for walks, play time, jumping in
the snow and falling asleep while having his belly rubbed. He is
a cuddlebug, curious and outgoing. Papa also plays a fantastic
game of fetch and will sit and wait when given a command.
Papa is up-to-date with vaccines and is ready to find a forever
home. If you are interested in meeting Papa, you can visit
him at the Northeast Animal Shelter located in Salem. Visiting
hours are Monday-Friday 10-8 and weekends 10-6. Weekends
tend to be extra busy, so please arrive early if you’re thinking
of adopting.
