Peabody Learning Academy graduates are all smiles after turning their tassles and graduating on Friday at the Northshore Mall in Peabody.
Peabody Learning Academy graduates 19
By Anne Marie Tobin
Weekly News Staff
19 young men and women
proudly accepted their
diplomas during the Simon
Youth Peabody Learning
Academy’s (PLA) annual
graduation at the Northshore
Mall on May 25.
“Today is something you
can be proud of for the rest of
your lives,” PLA Executive
Director Dr. Chris Lord said.
“Your resilience is inspiring.
You have already conquered
many obstacles many adults
would find formidable, if not
impossible to overcome. Your
resilience and the ability to
persist and pursue your dreams
will serve you well in the years
ahead.”
According to its website,
PLA offers an alternativelearning
setting to students who
are struggling in traditional
settings, and have fallen
behind or dropped out. PLA
provides individually-designed
approaches to help put students
on track to graduate.
The celebration was far
from ordinary, as many of
the graduates shared stories
about their struggles and the
challenges they faced on their
journey to graduation day.
Nearly all of the speakers
fought through tears.
Graduates shared heartfelt
hugs with special guests and
administrators as they received
their diplomas.
Ellasandra O’Neil, the
recipient of a $3,500 Simon
Youth Foundation scholarship,
said she had been skipping
classes at Peabody Veterans
Memorial High School and had
lost total interest in school. She
eventually decided that PLA
was her best option to finish
high school.
“I was an anxious kid so
I didn’t really go to school,
especially during COVID, and
I had so much going on with
home stuff my junior year, so
eventually I listened to people
who were pushing me to come
to this place,” O’Neill said.
“It’s the best decision I’ve ever
made.”
O’Neill plans to attend
North Shore Community
College and study earlychildhood
education.
Student of the Year Layara
Mariano said she plans to
attend a state university next
spring to study nursing. She,
too, felt lost at the high school.
“I wasn’t really having a
good time at Peabody High, so
I came here this year and it’s
been amazing,” she said. “All
the teachers and administrators
are really good. They make a
perfect effort to make sure that
everyone comes to school with
morning phone calls.”
School Committee member
Beverley Griffin Dunne said
it “broke her heart” to hear
students speak about their
struggles.
“They are so heartfelt and
there is so much in those
speeches that tells me why
this program is important,”
she said. “Thankfully, those
students came to this program
and were rescued before we
lost them.”
State Sen. Joan B. Lovely
(D-Salem) echoed Dunne’s
sentiments.
“But for this academy, for
these students who grace the
academy, these students would
be lost,” said Lovely.
Keynote speaker and former
PLA Executive Director Seith
Bedard, an assistant principal
at the high school, said that
for many PLA students, “this
is their last-ditch effort to get
through high school.”
“As you get to meet
people outside your bubble in
Peabody, you’ll start to notice
that they are just like you,”
he told the graduates. “People
that define their story are a lot
like you. They overcame their
adversity.”
State Rep. Thomas Walsh
(D-Peabody) said the academy
is all about investment.
“It’s an investment that all
of you made in yourselves,”
he said. “Everyone has come
together to make sure that you
succeed. This is a phenomenal
program. The lives they have
changed with this program is
quite something.”
SYF Youth Foundation CEO
and President said, “You are
amazing leaders who have had
great challenges to overcome…
Some thought perhaps you
would not make it to this day…
but you did.”
Northshore Mall General
Manager Mark Whiting
concluded the ceremony with a
reading of Robert Frost’s poem
“The Road Not Taken.” He said
the graduates will face similar
choices and that the decisions
they make will outline their
futures.
Following the ceremony,
Whiting, who announced he
will retire in August, summed
up the emotional day.
“I’m a tough bird, and
every year I completely break
down and get a good cry in
because I’m so proud of what
is accomplished here,” Whiting
said. “It’s my absolute best
accomplishment in my 27 years
of being here.”
Peabody P.R.E.P. students lauded for pioneering educational path
By Charlie McKenna
Weekly News Staff
At just its second-ever
graduation, the Peabody
Personalized Remote
Education Program (Peabody
P.R.E.P.) handed out 11
diplomas to graduating seniors,
who were urged to carry on the
pioneering spirit that led them
to attend a virtual school.The
ceremony was held on May 30
at the Black Box Theater.
The school provides virtual
learning for Peabody students
who developed a preference
for the flexibility remote
learning offers, and for those
who have disabilities that
make traditional, in-person
instruction challenging.
Executive Director Dr. Chris
Lord delivered lauded the
program’s flexibility.
“The ability to learn where
you want, when you want, has
provided many opportunities
for our students and their
families,” he said, noting that
six students logged in to their
classes from overseas during
the year.
Lord said the school’s
untraditional format allows
some students to earn more
credits than a traditional highschooler
might, with some
rising high-school freshmen
already beginning their highschool
electives.
Mayor Edward A.
Bettencourt Jr. said he has been
a “tremendous supporter of
our program over the years”
and “the school has “made a
difference in our district, in
our city, and in the lives of our
students.”
He thanked students,
faculty, and staff at the
school for their hard work
and dedication, which made
graduation day possible.
“Each of you has your own
story,” Bettencourt said. “I’m
so happy to be a part of this
special day.”
State Rep. Tom Walsh
(D-Peabody) told the graduates
they were pioneers who
bucked the traditional path for
education.
“The world has changed and
you are not only changing with
it, but you now will change the
world for the better,” Walsh
said. “I wish you all well as
you continue on the road to
your careers.”
Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Josh Vadala reflected on
his own background as the
grandson of immigrants who
valued education above all else.
He urged students to continue
prioritizing their own learning.
“What my parents and my
grandparents instilled in me…
was that education, no matter
where you do it, no matter
how you do, is your path to
happiness and success,” Vadala
said. “Each of you have taken
a very unique path, and it
might not look the same as
your peers. I hope you… find
something that you love, and
that you really enjoy your
time, dedicate that time to
your education, to yourself,
and I know that you will all
be successful and happy in the
years to come.”
Valedictorian Danial Mirza
earned a round of applause
when he announced he is
headed to the University of
Massachusetts Amherst in
the fall to pursue a degree in
engineering. He acknowledged
higher education isn’t for
everyone and praised his
classmates who are pursuing
gap years or heading straight
into the workforce.
“I want you all to be proud
of whatever you’re doing, you
all are going to make it far in
life,” he said.
Peabody P.R.E.P. is one
of seven fully-virtual schools
in Massachusetts. Lord said
the small contingent of heads
of school for programs like
P.R.E.P. meet on a monthly
basis, one of them being Carl
Tillona of the Pittsfield Public
Virtual Academy. He delivered
the keynote speech during
the ceremony — virtually, of
course.
Tillona echoed Walsh
in hammering home the
pioneering nature of the
students, going as far as to
read the definition of the word
“pioneer” in the Merriam-
Webster dictionary.
“I challenge you to keep this
pioneer spirit alive within you,
and you will do great things in
life.”
After Tillona’s remarks,
every graduate was given the
chance to speak.
Tatyana Leboeuf spoke
about the importance of the
accessibility services the
school offered, allowing her to
take advantage of captioning
while masks made it difficult to
lip-read.
Narayana Sanchez thanked
the school’s teachers and staff
for the support they provided
her, while Mikhealy Teles
122 graduates. President Thomas Nunan Jr.
led a commencement ceremony that included
words from students, staff, and alumni.
Class President Chloe Swartz took the
Salutatorian reflects on his influences and found family
By Andrew Cahill
Bishop Fenwick Salutatorian
Good evening. On behalf of my
fellow classmates, thank you all
for coming to celebrate this great
achievement in the lives of the
Fenwick class of 2023. After four
long and tiring years, we have made
it to the finish line. Tonight we are
joined by friends, family, teachers,
and administrators, all of whom
play an important role in our lives.
I think I can speak for everyone
when saying that we could not have
gotten this far without each and
every one of those people. While
it’s true that graduating is a personal
accomplishment, it is important to
recognize those who have helped us
along the way and made an impact
on our lives.
When I reflect on those who
have had an influence on me, the
list is never-ending. The first people
that come to mind are family. Our
families are the ones who are there
with us throughout all of life’s ups
and downs. Personally, my family
has had such a great and positive
influence on every stage of my life
so far. My mom, my dad, my sister
Samantha, and the rest of my family
are the reasons that I am the person
that I am today. To you guys, I want
to say a well-deserved thank you
from the bottom of my heart for all
the support you have given me.
But family isn’t just found in
a biological sense. Family can be
found anywhere, for example, in
friends. My friends are one of the
most important parts of my life. My
friends in school are my reason to
be happy every time I step into the
building, and they provide muchneeded
help with class assignments.
Bishop Fenwick graduates 122
being taken away,” said Swartz. “Although
challenging, the situation did not bring our
class down… Each and every person here is
stronger than when they first came through the
doors.”
Then, Fenwick Alumni Board President
Scott Wentzell urged the graduates to stay
close to their alma mater. He ended his speech
with a quote from “The Golden Girls.”
“The bottom line is, in life, sometimes
good things happen, and sometimes bad things
happen. But honey, if you don’t take a chance,
nothing happens,” Wentzell said.
After the “Golden Girls” theme
continued with the Fenwick Concert Choir’s
performance of “Thank You For Being A
Friend,” Salutatorian Andrew Cahill stepped
up to expand on what friendship has meant to
him during his high-school experience.
Shout out to Leo Schroeder for
putting up with me on FaceTime
night after night! Additionally, I
have a few friends who I’ve known
almost all my life that have been
such a positive influence year after
year. Even my friends from my
job at Market Basket have found
a way to be involved in my life.
Friends have always been a source
of inspiration (or other words) in my
life, and for that, they deserve an
equal thank you.
Along with family and friends,
as Ms. Marquez always says, the
collective community at our school
makes up a “Fenwick Family”. This
family starts with my classmates.
Through the study sessions,
group projects, class discussions,
FaceTime calls, free periods, and
collective panic (love the phrase
“collective panic”!), I have seen just
how close the students at Fenwick
are. Each year I felt closer to my
classmates, and the friendships we
have forged through these four years
are irreplaceable. The students at
Fenwick truly are the greatest.
The students make up just
one part of the Fenwick Family,
however. In addition to the students,
Fenwick has some of the best
teachers in the world. Each teacher
that I had truly cares about what
they do and has taught me so much,
not only about the subject matter
but also about how to be a better
person. Mrs. Velonis and Mr. Sousa
were two teachers who helped
me so much in adjusting to high
school during my freshman year.
Ms. O’Dea was always a source
of positive energy whether I had
her for class or homeroom, and she
made math so much fun. My two
years with Delo in chemistry were
filled with some of my favorite
experiences at Fenwick. Father B
and Mr. Canniff successfully opened
my eyes to faith. Lastly, all three of
my Spanish teachers, Mrs. Sheehan,
Ms. Mahoney, and Dr. Cormier
improved my skills far greater than
I ever thought was possible. If I had
more time, I could say something
positive about every single teacher
that I have had over these four years,
but those are just a few. The faculty
at Fenwick, just like the student
body, is truly amazing. When I
reflect on all the amazing times
I’ve had with my classmates and
teachers, I can truly see the essence
of what we call the “Fenwick
Family.” I have been happy to call
Fenwick my home for the past four
years.
I know this is a high school
graduation, but it is also necessary
to highlight the other aspects of
our lives that make us who we
are. School is very important, but
it can’t be our only focus if we
want to have a well-rounded life.
The activities we do and the new
things we try outside of school are
equally important. For example,
I have found happiness in things
like friends, work, and basketball,
among many others. Each person
has a different set of things other
than school that make them unique
and happy.
One fun thing that I plan on
doing after graduation is taking
a trip to Japan, so it is fitting to
give you a quote from a Japanese
writer who said this, “Preoccupied
with a single leaf, you won’t see
the tree. Preoccupied with a single
tree, you’ll miss the entire forest.”
While I’m sure this has many
interpretations, I have always seen
it as a call to not focus on just
one thing, and to find happiness
“My friends are one of the most important
parts of my life, and my friends in school are
the reason to be happy every time I step into
the building,” said Cahill.
Cahill went on to discuss how the
“Fenwick family” will be a part of his life
forever.
The crowd later heard from Valedictorian
Aoife DeClercq, who talked about some of the
physical possessions that will forever remind
her of her time at Fenwick.
“A picture from a photo booth at a dance
freshman year, a varsity letter, a lei from a
charity walk I did with the tennis team, and a
ticket to Spain,” DeClercq recalled. “We have
left our mark on Fenwick, and Fenwick has
left its mark on us.”
Each student then took to the stage oneby-one
to receive their diplomas, but they
in everything that’s around you.
We can often be preoccupied with
things like school or work, but in
doing so we miss out on so many
other things. It is very important
to consider this as we head off to
college. I’m certain each of you will
find success in whatever you do, but
remember not to be bogged down by
just one thing. You can find so much
more happiness if you look for other
sources of joy in life like hobbies,
sports, friends, and all sorts of other
things.
It has been such a pleasure to
have been at Fenwick for high
also were given something else. As a Fenwick
tradition, every graduate takes a sunflower to
honor Saint Julie Billiart, the founder of the
Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur.
“Saint Julie encouraged her Sisters to
be always turned toward the good God, just
as the sunflower turns toward the sun,” the
commencement brochure explained.
After a final word from Nunan, the seniors
gathered in a circle and joyfully threw their
caps.
Afterward, newly-minted graduate Allen
Karabina gave a recap of his early high-school
experience.
“Within two months of going here I made a
group of friends… the Fenwick family means
a lot, its been a really good four years here,”
Karabina said.
ST. JOHN’S PREP 2023
By Ryan Vermette
Weekly News Staff
Newly minted prep eagles soar
DANVERS — On May 20, 272
diplomas were conferred as St. John’s
Prep held its commencement ceremony for
the class of 2023 at Ryken Field.
The threat of rain didn’t put a damper
on the school’s 113th commencement.
Graduates Thomas Healey of Peabody
and Leyad Zavriyev of Swampscott came
together for a joint speech at the beginning
of the ceremony, where they reflected on
their favorite memories over the last four
years. The speech also heavily focused
on the impact the pandemic had on the
class of ’23, as it began halfway through
their freshman year. Zavriyev said he
was grateful for the challenges and new
perspectives that St. John’s Prep provided.
“Without St. John’s, I would not
have had so many opportunities to be so
healthily challenged and engaged by my
friends with vastly different political and
religious views,” Zavriyev said.
At the end of their speech, Healey
advised the class to take chances, and
enjoy the process in doing so.
“To the class of 2023, be bold, take
risks and have fun,” Healey said. “To our
peers, families, faculty and staff, know
that we love you and appreciate you all
immensely.”
This fall, Healey will be attending
UMass Amherst, while Zavriyev will
study at Brown University.
The two were chosen as class speakers
by Jonathan R. Rodriguez, of Lawrence,
who was the class valedictorian.
Rodriguez’s mother immigrated from
the Dominican Republic, and his father
migrated from Puerto Rico, according to a
press release from the Prep.
In his speech, Rodriguez focused on
the importance of family and how his
fellow graduates should not only develop
their own legacy, but preserve and
continue their families’ legacies.
“We must choose to live for things
that will outlive us,” Rodiguez said. “My
family has taught me not only with their
words, but also with their sacrifices that,
whether I succeed or fail spectacularly,
this moment is not the end.”
He continued by asking how the Class
of ’23 will prepare themselves for the
future.
“Following their footsteps, I must learn
to live not only for my own future, but for
the future of my family as well,” he said.
“We have gathered here today to celebrate
our past and to face each of our futures.
How will you choose to shape yours?”
Class Salutatorian Jackson Belanger
introduced student-selected keynote
speaker Bill Britton. Britton is a retiring
social-studies teacher who served in the
Vietnam War as a Marine Corps tank
commander, and gave remarks to the
graduating class inspired by his military
service and experience.
“You go forward from this sacred
ground into a world where you will
be tested, but you go with distinct
advantages” said Britton. “You are armed,
not with the weapons of war, but with
principles that can guide you in moments
of moral jeopardy.”
His speech continued by focusing
on how the graduates will face new
challenges and learn from them.
“You will make mistakes. Own up
to them. You will choose wrong paths.
Change directions,” Britton said. “Pay
the price to put yourself on a path to
happiness, because your joy will be
compelling, and you will have the
opportunity to make the world a better
place for all with whom you come in
PHOTO | ST. JOHN’S PREP
contact.”
Of the 272 graduates, 53 percent are
members of the National Honor Society
and 11 were National Merit Scholarcommended
students. Rodriguez and
Zavriyev, along with Matthew A.P. Dunn
of Danvers and Brian T. Nguyen of
Melrose, were NMS Finalists.
Thirty students were legacy graduates
this year, meaning their fathers,
grandfathers or great-grandfathers
attended the Prep.
Additionally, 38 Eagles signed national
letters of intent to continue their athletic
careers at the collegiate level.
Congratulations,
