APRIL 2018
A Letter from the Curate
Dear Friends,
I wonder if you, like me, have been intrigued by Easter day this year falling on the
first of April, April Fools’ Day? It has had me musing for some time about possible
links between the two things. One such link which sprung to mind is that in France,
a traditional April Fools’ Day joke is known as ‘poisson d’avril’ – ‘April Fish’, and
people sneak around trying to attach foil fish shapes to one another’s backs. The
fish being a symbol used since the very earliest days of Christianity for Jesus
makes for a sort of a link between the two days.
Far more exciting a link though, I think, is that for Christians, Easter is no joke! At
Easter we celebrate the resurrection of Jesus Christ – the most wonderful and
astounding miracle of them all. A love that conquers death is no joke.
I often wonder how it felt for those women who came to Jesus’ tomb that first
Easter morning to tend the body of their friend and teacher. I wonder how it felt to
find it empty, how long it took for the realisation to dawn that Jesus was alive..
This was no joke. This was Good News – the best possible news – and they had to
tell everyone! Jesus must have been who they hoped he was! He had come to
save them, but as so often is the case with God, he didn’t do it in the way they
were expecting!
2000 years later, we still celebrate the Good News, and we still have to tell
everyone!
Of course there are many who think it is foolish to believe that Jesus rose from the
dead. This is not a new position, even St. Paul in his letter to the Corinthians
writes, “For the message about the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing,
but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.” (1 Corinthians 1:18)
It is difficult to imagine, difficult to understand and yet here we are 2000 years on
still talking about it, still celebrating it. You don’t need to look far to find someone
profoundly changed by the reality that the creator of the universe became human,
was crucified, died and rose again for the love of the human race he created.
Who are we to be so desperately loved by the creator of the universe? And yet we
are. So what shall we do about it?
Love and prayers,
Rev Claire
APRIL 2018
A Letter from the Bishop
I have recently made my maiden speech in the House of Lords. You will find a copy
of the speech on the diocesan website, but I began by thanking those who had
made me welcome and referring to the beauty that surrounds us in our diocese
and also the rugged, independent-mindedness of its people.
During the speech I also referred to my working-class roots and my early life in the
former steel town of Consett, in north-west Durham, and the fact that I found faith
and a vocation to the priesthood at the age of 13. The call to this vocation was a
surprise to me, and a surprise that has not entirely left me; that God was calling
someone like me to be a priest.
This vocation has taken me to south London, Hampshire and Portsmouth, and, for
the past six years, the Diocese of Lincoln, and my ministry in such settings
informed the text for my speech, which was part of a response to the economy in
the light of the Chancellor of the Exchequer’s Spring Statement.
As I stated, there was much to welcome in what was announced in the Spring
Statement. The light at the end of the tunnel, the modest improvement in economic
forecasts and the prospect of an increase in spending on and investment in public
services will be good news to the people of Lincolnshire, especially if what is
devoted to Lincolnshire addresses the challenge we face.
In our local context, we can see the challenges facing areas such as health and
education and, as a result of climate change, our environment. We face such
challenges while seeking to fulfil our duty to seek to create a fairer and more
integrated society, where none feel ‘left behind’, and where every person is shown
love and given the opportunity to flourish and fulfil their calling.
As you read these words, we will have recently celebrated the joy of Easter. Lent,
Holy Week and Easter present us with the opportunity to reflect, listen, prepare
and resolve to act as we embrace the hope that is to be found in the message of
resurrection. At this time of a personal new beginning in the House of Lords, I
resolve to offer a further public voice for the people of our diocese, and, with you,
to continue to try to transform lives across greater Lincolnshire.
With every blessing for Easter,
+Christopher
Remembrance 2018
Churches across the country are commemorating the 100 th
Anniversary of the end of World War I by making poppies to
adorn their buildings.
At St Thomas’, we are hoping to create a cascade of poppies to
hang from the church tower in November.
There are various ways in which YOU can help:
1. Donate some red yarn, red felt, scraps of black yarn or black
buttons.
2. Knit or crochet poppies. (Patterns are available).
3. Make poppies from felt or other suitable fabric.
4. Donate some garden netting and or cable ties to assist with
construction of the cascade.
5. Nearer the time, help with securing poppies to the netting and
assembling the cascade.
Tuition can be given, so ANYONE can have a go and get
involved. Knit and natter sessions can be arranged!
For more information, contact Julia Pullen on 07530 184381 or
email: juliapullen07@yahoo.co.uk .
Thank you for your help
Please note: this is in addition to, not as a substitute for, the Royal British Legion’s
Annual Poppy Appeal.
Market Rasen Primary School
Welcome to our update on Term Four where we have been up to lots of exciting things
over the past few weeks.
Our Year Three and Four children are currently in the middle of their residential visit to
Rand Farm Park where they will enjoy the opportunity to experience all aspects of life on
a farm and enjoy the amazing opportunities that they will be having.
The children have also been running their exit days cafes in the hall as part of their Young
Entrepreneur topic and we have had lots of parents come and sample some delicious
cakes and goodies.
We have lots of exit day activities planned across the rest of the school in the coming
week. Our Reception children had a great time on their visit to Sundown Adventure Land
and enjoyed the rides and meeting the animals. As well as lots of exciting opportunities
planned in the school day, we also have lots of after school clubs and opportunities. Our
staff work with groups of children across lots of curriculum areas. This edition, our Sports
Ambassadors would like to tell you a little about what they do.
Hello from the School Sports and Health Ambassadors,
As you may be aware, we have been running several fun and engaging games on the
Key Stage 2 playground for the pupils at our school. These include: Maze Challenge,
Chess, Draughts, Bean Bag Toss and Snakes and Ladders. To
run these games we bring the equipment out every break and
lunch time. We also monitor the games to see that they are
played fairly and within the rules. Lastly, we maintain the
equipment and make sure that there is enough for the game to
run and it is not damaged.
Going forwards we are looking to extend this to the Key Stage
1 playground. We are also going to expand on the variety of
games available. Additionally, there will be competitions for
children to enter on and off the playground.
We are looking forward to the rest of the year, we hope you are
too.
Sam, Adam, Peter and Stan
Each term, Gareth and Sarah, our local Methodist workers create, with the help of the
Collective Worship Council, a Prayer Space in school so children can write prayers.
Children are encouraged to write a prayer for the space and they are shared in Collective
Worship by staff, Reverend Steve and the Collective Worship Council.
Have a wonderful Easter and we will have lots more of our exciting curriculum activities to
share with you throughout the rest of the year.
If you would like any further information or to discuss anything with us, please phone the
School Office on 01673 842395 or visit our website at www.marketrasen.lincs.sch.uk You
can also follow us on Twitter at @NorthWoldsFed where you will find out more about
what exciting things we have been doing in school.
The BIG Brew
Thank you to everyone who came to support the Big Brew Coffee Morning at The
Rectory on March 5th. We raised a total of £190 in donations from refreshments towards
the work of Traidcraft. The UK Government has pledged to double every pound raised at
this event across the country to further the work of Traidcraft in countries where help is
so desperately needed. The Traidcraft stall organized by Alison Atkinson also sold £153
of products and took £53 of orders. A huge thank you to everybody who contributed to a
successful morning, particularly Barbara and Julia for making the drinks and washing all
the dishes (with a little help from Roger)
The theme this year was the “Hidden Entrepreneur appeal” which will help people in
some of the world’s poorest countries. It aims to enable people to build businesses,
make a profit, feed their families and educate their children. One such “Hidden
Entrepreneur” is Suni who after receiving business training from Traidcraft Exchange,
opened a small shop on the road near her house, selling sweets, snacks basic food and
fertilisers. Her confidence has grown hugely and her shop helps support the education of
her ten-year-old son! The money raised at the Big Brew will continue to provide
opportunities for even more families like this one.
It was so good to see so many people join us and have fellowship together.
Congratulations to Jean Johnson who was the winner of the fair trade Easter Egg. Jean
successfully located the correct fruit tree which the goat was hiding behind on Samuel’s
farm.
APRIL 2018
A day to explore and discuss vocation and what it is
like to feel ‘called’ led by Jeffery Heskins and
11

APRIL 2018
Have you ever had that feeling that something might be
tugging at your life and you didn’t know what it was?
Have you ever had that moment when you thought all along
that God called other people but not someone like you?
Have you ever had that moment when you finally thought that
it might be that God was steering you towards something?
... and you didn’t know what to do
or where to go?
It happens to more people than you think and no, you are not
going mad; it might be that something important is happening
to you.
Why not come along to this Vocations Day and meet some
others who are asking the same questions and feeling unsure
of what to do next; what steps to take; which way to go.
There will be a chance to hear others speak of how it was for
them when they first sensed this idea of ‘being called’ and how
they went about handling it. There will be the chance to ask
questions about what might be involved in discerning a calling,
what sort of training exists for those who want to move
forward and what kind of ongoing support there will be after
that.
Come and find out more at the Lincoln Diocesan Vocations
Day on Saturday 12th May 2018 at St. Luke’s Church,
Birchwood.
Programme for the day
10.30 Arrivals and coffee.
10.50 Welcome, notices and outline of the day.
APRIL 2018
11.00 How did it all start and what happened then?
Two people who have been exploring their vocation
will share some thoughts in an open conversation on
on how things began for each of them. What is it like to
wonder if God is calling? Who did they tell? How did it
make them feel? How can they help us begin to talk
about it.
11.40 Small group conversations. How do I know I am
called by God?
12.00 So what is it like being ordained and keeping up the
day job; feeling a call to the religious life; or a call to
ordained ministry in your local home community; how
about a lay preaching ministry as a trained Reader;
have you ever wondered about being a Distinctive
Deacon and what that means, or going ‘full me’ as an
ordained or lay person? What is an Authorised Lay
Minister (ALM)? All is revealed!
1.00 Questions to the panel.
1.15 Lunch. Bring a sandwich. Drinks provided.
1.45 I’m not academic and I’m nervous about the training!
VESTRY PLANS
The sketch below shows how the vestry refurbishment is shaping.
The current plan involves raising the floor so it is level with the
outside pavement to give full disabled access. There will be a new
full length cupboard for robes, a new sink unit and new low level
cupboards for additional storage. It is planned that the vestry will
also be used as a Parish office.
Mini Messy Church
Our young families have been creative and busy with lots of new crafts at Mini
Messy Church in the past month. We listened to the story about the first miracle
Jesus performed in Cana at a very special wedding. To help tell the story the
children decorated wine jugs in the colours of
water (blue) and wine (red). They certainly know
their colours! We have also heard the story of
Palm Sunday told with the aid of a very special
donkey puppet and this was followed by a very
exciting retelling of our Easter Story. I’m sure that
everyone in Market Rasen will have heard them
shouting “He’s alive!” Each of the children took
home a gift from the church. This was a lovely
book telling the story of Easter to share with
friends and family. As our numbers continue to
grow can I ask that you hold the families and our
team of dedicated helpers in your prayers. The
relationships that have developed between
families and church members have continued to
strengthen and this is very encouraging indeed.
