Henry Freelance Reporter No high school girls varsity tennis team in Illinois has ever been a dominant force for as long as were the New Trier teams under the coaching leadership of Northbrook’s Mary Jo “Timmy” Timmis from 1981 to 1994. During those years, the Illinois High School Athletic Association records that Trevian girls teams won six state championships, and finished second five times. Timmis died Feb. 17, 2018 at age 82. Those milestones will be only a few of the many facets of the Northbrook resident’s richly textured life that will be recalled during a celebration of her life on April 14 at the Donnellan Family Funeral Home, 10045 Skokie Blvd., Skokie. Visitation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. A funeral service will follow at 3 p.m. Timmis was born to William and Naomi Hanson, the second of 10 children. She attended St. Olaf College in Carlton, Minn. then graduated from the University of Minnesota with a major in physical education and a minor in music. She taught Physical Education in Hawaii, San Jose, Phoenix and in 1968 began her career at New Trier East as a P.E. teacher. She began coaching tennis there when interest in girls sports exploded following the passage of Title IX in 1972. When the two New Trier’s merged in 1981, she was named coach of the varsity team. Her team not only won state that year, they finished first and second in singles and doubles. Over the next decade, Timmis coached outstanding players such Maeve Quinlan, Michelle Torres, Kim Anderson, Lynn Wise, Wendy Fix, and Megan Mawicke. Along the way, Timmis was awarded Coach of the Year honors three times and was sworn into the Illinois High School Tennis Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 1993. All the while, Timmis stressed that winning was not her No. 1 priority. Speaking at an awards ceremony, she said: “being on a tennis team is not just about tennis but about life. I try to emphasize the importance of life over the game of tennis.” Tom Timmis, her husband and a retired New Trier faculty member, expanded on that attitude. “She was very concerned about the girls,” he said. “She always kept more girls on the team than she probably should have. She would say, ‘I want to give them the experience of being in a competitive sport where you learn certain skills and get along with people.’ They were lifetime skills she would teach.” Please see MEMORIAM, 32 Northbrook resident Mary Jo Timmis coached tennis at New Trier for 13 years.
