TOP MARKS to the St Andrew’s College
big band for coping with the massive
emotional hurdle they had to deal
with at the recent National Youth Jazz
Competition (see page 3).
Tom Fastier, who went to Cashmere
High and played in the St Andrew’s band, died tragically the day
before the festival. Not only did the band play but they won the
big band title – an exceptional achievement given the circumstances.
Said the college’s head of music Duncan Ferguson: “We
were delighted to win, but it was bittersweet.”
St Andrew’s also stood out in the individual competitions.
Serge Beaton won the Rodger Fox Trophy for the most outstanding
trombonist and Angus Rainey won the Edwina Thorne
Trophy for the most outstanding trumpet or flugel.
