Apartments’
owners
expect EQC
sign-off
this week
• By Sarla Donovan
THE OWNERS of Sumner’s Cave
Rock Apartments are expecting the
Earthquake Commission to sign-off
on a settlement agreement this week.
Body corporate chairman Mike
White said the group had gone
into mediation with IAG and EQC
on February 20, and signed off
on a deal with IAG on February
22 – coincidentally seven years
to the day after the February 22,
2011, earthquake. However, they
are waiting for EQC to sign the
agreement.
“Given that EQC actually drafted
the agreement, there’ll be no
problem with them doing that.”
The apartments suffered damage
in the February and June, 2011,
earthquakes and were demolished in
late 2012. In 2016, IAG’s offer of the
difference between indemnity value,
$10 million, and the sum insured,
$16 million, was rejected by the body
corporate.
The mediation agreement
prevented Mr White from disclosing
the settlement amount, but he said it
involved the two parties paying “a bit
more money than they’d wanted to
earlier.”
DEAN CALVERT was a pretty useful
boxer in his day, and these days he’s not a
bad sort of a publican.
He’s mine host at the Valley Inn and
when he’s not there he spends a bit of time
travelling the world watching boxing.
He has just returned from the Parker/Joshua fight in Wales
(see page 1). He spent time in the Parker camp, courtesy of fellow
Cantabrian Kevin Barry who trained Calvert during part of his
career.
Like any good publican he also did some industry research
while in Wales: “We organised a good pub crawl one day.”
It was, of course, to check on the menus for new ideas.
GETTING THE right consents
to open a pizza restaurant in
Sumner took so long, Palwinder
Singh had to postpone his
planned wedding in February.
The space at 7 Wakefield Ave
was vacated by Stoked Surf,
Snow and Style about a year ago.
Mr Singh took over the lease
in May and intended to open
a wood-fired pizza and pasta
restaurant called Fire and Slice,
with indoor seating for up to 20
people.
But getting the required
consents has taken five months
longer than expected. However,
he hasn’t been put off by the
process.
“To be honest, the whole thing
has been challenging, exciting
and really good learning. It’s
not all negative. It’s been a good
challenge, which me and my
landlord have sorted out now.”
He said he was initially told by
city council staff that new commercial
property rules meant
all he needed was a building
consent for a new fit-out.
But unexpected strengthening
work pushed the project out to
December.
Then two days before Christmas,
city council planners called
Mr Singh to say a resource
consent was in fact required. It
took a further month to prepare
the consent application, which
was lodged in late January and
approved in mid-March.
“Luckily, the landlords, Anthony
and Jennifer, have really
helped me a lot. I really appreciate
their support and patience
because they’ve also lost money;
they never asked for rent. I salute
them,” said Mr Singh.
The final interior work is now
under way with an anticipated
opening date in the last week of
this month.
Originally from the northern-
shifted to Sumner in 2016 after
five years working at Poenamo
Hotel in Auckland.
While there, he took the opportunity
to learn about New
Zealand culture, including
rugby, which he now follows
enthusiastically.
Long weekends visiting the
South Island brought an appreciation
for its beauty, prompting
his move.
Movies, cafes, shops,
beaches, really good walking
and cycling tracks. What else
Singh’s first food business but he
has been working in hospitality
since 2006.
His experience from frontof-house
to housekeeping and
kitchen work has given him a
good grounding, he said.
“I’m 100 percent dedicated
and I even had to postpone
my wedding. It was to be in
February but we have put it off
till May. She’s not really happy,
but after understanding my
dedication to the project, she
said: ‘Okay, it’s alright’. She
supports me.”
LYTTELTON’S NEW MURAL
Three new murals by Los
Guy Ellis, also known as Dcypher,
are planned for Lyttelton’s Oxford
include scenes from the early days
and birds and an abstract urban
scene featuring a skateboarder.
Work will begin on the two-week
project on April 14, with designs
being projected onto the walls
so they can be outlined prior to
painting.
The driver of a truck carrying
a five-tonne digger lost control
was not injured and no other
vehicles were involved.
CACTUS UNDER FIRE
Continued planting of prickly
cactus alongside the Esplanade
footpath is under review. The
suitability of the plants has been
questioned by Linwood-Central-
member Darrell Latham, who
said the sharp points can make
them dangerous for footpath
users. Dr Latham has requested
new plantings near Hardwicke St
DRIVERS ARE avoiding the St
Andrews Hill-Bridle Path Rd
intersection by using The Brae to
access Main Rd.
And it’s creating a steady flow
of traffic down the steep, narrow
street – prompting the city
council to install new signage
and stopping restrictions near
the intersecting service road at
the bottom of the hill.
The service road is a 100m
cul-de-sac which runs parallel to
Main Rd and intersects The Brae
just before Main Rd.
It provides seven car parks for
residents and their visitors and
can also function as a ‘park and
ride’ enabling drivers to park
their vehicle and either use a bus
service or the Coastal Pathway.
A city council report provided
to the Linwood-Central-Heathcote
Community Board said
drivers travelling on The Brae
THREE HIGH-RISK bends
on Major Hornbrook Rd in Mt
Pleasant will have no-stopping
restrictions installed after a
resident raised safety concerns.
The change is expected to improve
sight lines for drivers and
as it approaches Main Rd had
poor forward sight lines and were
moving relatively quickly due to
the downhill slope. A give way
sign at the currently uncontrolled
for residents exiting driveways,
and reduce the likelihood of a
head-on collision as vehicles
won’t need to overtake parked
vehicles.
It will also create more space
for large vehicles such as rubbish
Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
Plan to solve traffic issues in The Brae
intersection of the service road
with The Brae would reduce potential
confusion, the report said.
And no-stopping lines will be
implemented along the service
trucks and buses which use the
road.
No stopping lines will be
painted on the corners between
numbers 138 and 149 Major
Hornbrook Rd. And a continuous
centre line will be painted
New speed
limit for
Dyers Pass Rd
A NEW 60km/h speed limit and
double yellow lines will be in
place on Dyers Pass Rd by early
May.
The speed limit change was
approved by the city council last
week.
A decision to paint double yellow
lines on the stretch between
Summit Rd and the Sign of the
Takahe was earlier made by the
Spreydon-Cashmere Community
Board.
But the Banks Peninsula Commmunity
Board decided against
yellow lines on the Summit Rd-
Governors Bay section due to the
road’s narrowness and general
condition.
The changes are designed to try
and reduce the crash rate.
Installation of the double
yellow lines, the new speed limit
signs and raised centre line pavement
markers will begin in mid
April.
The work is scheduled to take
place between April 15-18, 22-26,
29 and May 2.
While the work is done, Dyers
Pass Rd will be closed to traffic
from the Sign of the Takahe to
Governors Bay between 7pm and
Cave Rock Apartments
dispute finally settled
•From page 1
Within the next eight weeks,
the body corporate will meet to
decide whether to rebuild or sell
the property ‘as is, where is’.
Mr White said it was more
likely the owners would sell.
“Judging by the responses
thus far, most people just want
to be rid of the whole problem
and move on.”
A resource consent to rebuild
the main block of apartments
remains in place until January
next year, along with architectural
plans.
The consent was obtained
in 2012/13, based on an understanding
with IAG that
reinstatement would go ahead,
said Mr White.
“When IAG changed their
mind, that’s when we got into
litigation with them.”
Meanwhile, concerns were
last week raised about the apartments’
underground car park,
accessed off Wakefield Ave.
Children have been playing in
the abandoned space, which has
been described as “a scene from
a horror movie.”
A padlock on the door was
broken off and the chain link
damaged, allowing people access.
Sumner resident Paul Strangwick
raised the issue on the
Sumner Community Facebook
page last week, warning that
children were daring each other
to go into the basement. He
said the power was still on with
lights flickering and water continually
dripping onto the floor.
He and builder Andrew
Spencer offered to board up
the entrance after Mr White
contacted him on Sunday. It has
since been secured.
Mr White confirmed there
was power to the basement as it
was a reticulated system.
There were also pumps
running 24/7 to control the
inflow of groundwater from
earthquake-damaged sumps
underground.
The door has been vandalised
at least three times over the
past year, which has been “very
frustrating,” Mr White said.
“We do our best to keep it as
secure as we can, but whoever
does it keeps breaking in again.”
Now
Calvert family meet Parker in UK
•From page 1
Their love for the sport has seen
them travel to a number of high
profile fights around the world,
including the Floyd Mayweather
Jr v Manny Pacquiao fight in Las
Vegas in 2015.
However, the world title fight
between Parker and Joshua on
Easter Sunday was unlike any the
family had travelled together to
see before. They were made to feel
like part of the Parker family in
the build up to his biggest fight to
date.
Mr Calvert’s main connection
to the Parker camp comes
through Parker’s trainer Kevin
Barry, who also trained Mr Calvert
in the early 1990s.
“We got made to feel like part of
the family. His mum would come
down to breakfast every morning
and say hello and give us a hug
and a kiss,” said Mr Calvert.
“We were lucky enough to be
invited on his team walk the
morning of the fight. It’s something
he does the morning of his
fights; just goes for a 15min walk
to relax.”
Mr Calvert won four New
Zealand titles in his career as a
welterweight. He also won the
Jameson Belt in 1992. The belt is
awarded to the best boxer at the
national championships each
year. Mr Calvert’s first boxing
trainer was his grandfather
Ryan Mitchell. This was before
Fire rages, homes at risk
FAMILY: Dean Calvert, Joseph Parker, Bryce Calvert and George
Calvert in the UK.
he worked with Barry who was
training David Tua at the same
time.
Mr Calvert had 70 amateur
fights before going on to register a
professional record of eight wins
from eight fights. He took what
was originally set to be a short
break from fighting at 24. However,
Mr Calvert never returned
to training.
“I do regret it sometimes, but
then I’ve had a lot of other great
memories since doing other
things.”
After boxing, Mr Calvert
worked for his family cleaning
business for 17 years before
buying the Valley Inn Tavern in
2004.
“I like the social side. It’s a good
place to catch up with friends and
the locals.”
Although Mr Calvert was lucky
enough to be at Cardiff’s Millennium
Stadium 10 rows back from
the action, he says the Valley Inn
Tavern was as good a place as any
to watch the fight.
“We were chock-a-block for the
Parker fight. We had a couple of
hundred people here, every time
he’s fought it’s been like that.”
As for the future of his favourite
boxer, Mr Calvert believes, at just
26, Parker has the determination
to bounce back.
“He was talking to us on the
plane on the way home and
he’s just determined to get
back in there and get back to
the top.”
Frocks, Feathers & Fabrication
John Emery’s latest exhibition at Little River Gallery
Although born and raised in the American Midwest,
John Emery has spent the past twenty-five years shuttling
back and forth between Dayton, Ohio and Burkes Pass,
New Zealand, where he established a second home and
studio in 2000.
“It is not just the object, but also its history--its
veritable shadow-- that I set out to record in my work.
It is the fragmented story that haunts me. Memories,
symbolism, physical similarities, all play a part in creating
the “fabrication”. Objects are often from a bygone era, or
worn with repeated use,
reflecting time’s passage.
At times they are literally
in pieces: the shattered
porcelain, the cast-off
sardine tin, a bird feather,
or watching the flight of a
fantail. In reclaiming them
for my own tromp l’oiel
still life constructions, I
conjure them into a new
world. Like life itself,
each work resonates with
both the story and history
associated with some
objects, and the imagined
potential of others.
My painting process typically begins with a solitary
object, a toy bear, or a Victorian hunting dress. A visual
narrative is then constructed in the same way that I
fabricated stories about the neglected objects found in
my grandparents’ long forgotten trunks. As with all my
works, some elements become three-dimensional as I
form them from paper, the most versatile material I know”
John Emery.
Time flies over us, but
leaves its shadow behind.
Call for anglers to
clean up hooks, lines
• By Sarla Donovan
USED HOOKS and pieces
of cut fishing line pose a
hazard to bird and sea life.
Beachville Rd resident
Polly Nash said anglers
using the seawall were
leaving used lines and
hooks lying around rather
than disposing of them
responsibly.
She gathered up more
than a dozen pieces of cut
fishing line last Wednesday
morning, including one
that still had a rusty hook
in it.
“I mentioned to one fisherman
the environmental
damage discarded lines
and hooks cause to bird
life as well as ocean life but
he seemed indifferent and
uncaring,” she said.
The seawall bordering
the Avon-Heathcote estuary
is a popular spot to
fish from, especially on
weekends.
But Ms Nash said she
had noticed an increasingly
“negligent and lazy”
attitude towards disposing
of surplus fishing line and
hooks.
She contacted the Bay
UPSET: Polly Nash wants anglers to clean up their
hooks and lines along Beachville Rd.
PHOTO: MARTIN HUNTER
Harbour News hoping
to raise awareness of the
problem.
“People (need) to wake
up and show greater
responsibility for their actions
when fishing because
one day a child or a dog
could stand on a hook, a
bird get entangled and lose
a leg or worse.”
The monofilament line
can also be deadly to wildlife
as ocean animals can’t
break free once entangled.
Lost monofilament lines
and nets can take many
years to degrade.
Long Term Plan
is out for public
consultation until
5pm, Friday. If you
want to have your
say, do it now, writes
Labour MP for Port
Hills Ruth Dyson
THERE ARE many areas which are of
importance to us and the well-being of
our communities, but I thought I would
just highlight a few that are of local
significance.
The first big issue is how much we do
and how fast – and, therefore, what our
rating base should be for the period in
question. There is a 5.5 per cent rates
increase proposed. Everyone would like
it to be less I am sure, but that would
mean that our horizontal infrastructure
would get worse rather than improve, and
community facilities would not be able
to proceed until later. So, if we are asking
for additional spending, the money has
to come from cutting something that is
FEEDBACK:
City council
funding for the
Naval Point
Yacht Club
redevelopment
is one of
several
important
issues in the
Lyttelton area.
Have a say on the LTP
on budget or a slightly increased rates
increase. Worthwhile considering.
Roads, pipes and footpaths must continue
to be improved and, likewise, our
community facilities, such as libraries,
swimming pools and community centres,
need to continue to be progressed.
A lot of people express concerns about
the need to do more on parks maintenance.
The Linwood-Woolston pool needs
to stay on budget, support for the Naval
Point Club and Coastguard‘s new build is
important for the area as is security of use
for the rugby club changing facility.
Reserve management committees,
such as Urumau need to be financially
supported and we should continue to support
funding for the coastal pathway – a
regional asset.
So is the balance of spending and rating
about right? Let the city council know –
it’s your money and your community.
WITH MARY IN FAITH
TĀTOU KO MERE E WHAKAPONO ANA
FROM THE BOARD
History shows the heart of our school
remains strong and true through
change. Marian College was established
in 1982 with the bringing together
of two Catholic secondary schools
for girls– McKillop College and St
Mary’s College – the latter being one
of the oldest schools in Canterbury,
established in 1893.
The gospel values that Marian College
was built on continue through to today,
along with the guidance and steady
support of the Catholic Diocese of
Christchurch.
The appointment of our new Bishop and
his intention to make Marian College a
priority – signals the next new phase for
our school.
Our community is rich in experience,
knowledge, faith and diversity and
we value every contribution. The
Marian College Board extends an open
invitation to everyone who is part of
Marian College’s history - and future -
to connect with us. This includes past
and present students, immediate and
extended family, and next generations -
the young women who will lead us into
the future.
There will be opportunities to be
involved, and to have a say on what our
new school will look like.
MODEL UN
Unlike any other high school event,
the Canterbury Model UN 2018 brings
together 200 students for two days of
debate and discussion on issues affecting
society today.
Jodie said she found the experience
extremely valuable. “Each of us was
assigned a country and spent two days
debating global issues, problem solving,
meeting 200 other students and having
heaps of fun,” Jodie said.
at the sPacPac Polyfest 2018
Festival held in Burwood recently.
The Marian College Pasifika Group
also had the most students from
any one school on stage – 43
students performed – and had
the honour of closing the annual
festival.
The students performed traditional
Samoan items with their own twist
of Marian Magic. Many hours of
practice led to stunning
performances at Polyfest, the
Marian College Fia Fia night and
IN THE COMMUNITY
Marian College has a long standing mission
to encourage young women to fulfil their
potential and contribute to the common
good of society.
Lions Clubs also place value on service
and have a long history of contributing to
communities all over the world.
Recently Deputy Head student Rachael
Nilsson was one of several young people
invited to speak at the Lions District 202E
convention, on young people’s views of
community service and how traditional
Lions Clubs can involve more young
people.
The Marian College choir also had the
honour of singing at the convention’s
rededication and remembrance service.
Everything
that makes
Redcliffs
Park a great
site for a
park, also
makes it a
great site
for a school,
writes
board of trustees chairman
Darren Fidler
AS REDCLIFFS School edges
nearer to returning home to
our suburb, we wanted to take
the opportunity to alleviate
some concerns and correct
some misinformation about
the school’s proposed move
to Redcliffs Park, particularly
around flooding and drainage.
The Ministry of Education has
made it quite clear to us, and the
incoming Government, that the
only way in which our school
can return to Redcliffs without
further significant delay is to
relocate to Redcliffs Park.
A few points on the current
proposal given the concerns
about flooding and tsunamis:
Everything that makes Redcliffs
Park a great site for a park,
also makes it a great site for a
school.
The MoE has committed to
improved drainage on the field.
The photos of flooding on the
field shown in recent media were
either taken when a faulty valve
was letting surging tides back
onto Celia St, or in such significant
rain events that pretty
much every park in Christchurch
had surface flooding.
At the recent Redcliffs Residents
Association AGM, we were
briefed by Civil Defence on the
different types of tsunamis that
Christchurch could be affected
by. The school has had earthquake
response plans and a tsunami
evacuation plan for every
site we’ve been on, and in this
case, children would be evacuated
up the hill in a similar time
from any location in Redcliffs.
And to reiterate other information
that is already publicly
available:
The buildings on the old site
were due for renewal and were
at the end of their life. The MoE
Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi
Alleviating concerns over school site
has made it clear that the school
will be a new build, wherever it
is.
Redcliffs Park is adjacent to
perhaps the best walking and
cycling facility in Christchurch,
the Coastal Pathway. This
means that once children are on
the Coastal Pathway from Moncks
Bay through to Mt Pleasant,
they can walk, scooter or cycle
to the new school site without
having to worry about crossing
roads or dealing with traffic.
This is a perfect opportunity to
reduce the number of people
driving their kids to school, taking
cars off the road, improving
the children’s level of physical
activity, and improving their
concentration.
The city council has indicated
that they want to retain some of
the buildings in the south-east
corner of the old site for community
use, with the rest of the
site reverting to park land to offer
the same amenity as Redcliffs
Park.
After seven years of significant
stress for our whole community,
if we can have Redcliffs Park
redesignated by MP Megan
Woods, then we truly will have
regeneration. Our school as the
heart of this suburb can return,
with building starting in the
third quarter of this year.
There is no perfect site for a
school, all have their challenges,
including the old site. But we’ve
shown as a community that we
can overcome those challenges.
Anyone with ongoing concerns
is welcome to contact us
directly, as it’s likely we’ve discussed
the same topics with the
MoE, Regenerate Christchurch,
Department of Conservation,
LINZ, or any of the many other
agencies we’ve been dealing with
weekly for the last few years.
Walkathon
raises money
for helipad
A COMMUNITY walkathon in
Diamond Harbour on Saturday
raised almost $2500 for an
upgrade of the Christchurch
Hospital helicopter landing pad.
Walkers were sponsored to
take part in the 32km walk
around Stoddart Point Reserve.
Diamond Harbour GP Peter
Davies, who helped organised
the event, said he was feeling a
“little bit stiff” after the walk. “I
kept wanting to sit down, but I
thought if I do, I probably won’t
get back up so I kept going.
It was great to see everyone’s
enthusiasm to do their bit for this
service.”
Along with sponsorship,
money was also raised through
a sausage sizzle and a cake stall
run by Diamond Harbour School
pupils. About $500 has been
raised on a Givealittle page.
The money will go towards
the Maia Health Foundation’s
‘13-minutes’ campaign, which
aims to raise $500,000 for a
proposed rooftop helipad at the
hospital’s new acute services
building.
World championship medal for
Sumner cross-country runner
• By Gordon Findlater
SUMNER’S SOFIA Kennedy
helped the New Zealand girls
team to a bronze medal finish
at the ISF World Championship
Cross Country in Paris.
Kennedy, 17, played a vital role
in the six-strong team winning
bronze. The total of the top-four
finishers from each team are
combined to reach a total team
score. The team with the lowest
total score wins gold.
The secondary school-age
event saw more than 600 runners,
from 33 countries, across
five continents, run under the
Eiffel tower as part of the 4150m
course.
The Sumner runner was the
fourth Kiwi home, finishing
29th in the 100-strong race girls
race. She completed the course
in 14min 19sec, 46sec behind
race winner Ella Heeney from
Australia.
Kennedy’s tally combined with
Hannah O’Conner (fourth),
Aimee Fergusson (fifth), Phoebe
McKnight (11th) equalled 49
points which was good enough
for third behind Australia
(29pts) and England (33pts).
The accomplishment saw
the NZ girls finish ahead of
renowned middle distance running
countries such as Morocco,
France and Algeria.
ACCOMPLISHMENT: Sofia
Kennedy (left) was part of
the New Zealand girls team
which won bronze in Paris.
Kennedy was the only South
Island member of the girls
team.
The NZ boys team finished
fifth on 89 points behind Morocco
(29pts), England (35pts),
Algeria (62pts) and Spain
(74pts). The boys team featured
Clarke chosen for NZ team
TAYLORS MISTAKE teenage
surf lifesaver Louis Clarke has
been selected in the 10-strong
New Zealand team to compete at
the Sanyo Cup in Japan.
The annual international
event, which is run by the Japan
Lifesaving Association, will
take place from June 23-24 in
Fukuoka, Japan.
The beach-based competition
will be run with the same
programme on each day including
surf, board, ski and ocean
person races, beach flags, sprints
and other team events.
Clarke, 16, recently won his
first maiden open grade event at
the New Zealand Surf Life Saving
Championships in Gisborne
when he powered to victory in
the men’s surf race.
Clarke was also named in the
national youth development
squad following the event.
The New Zealand team for the
Sanyo Cup will join teams from
Australia, United States, Great
Britain, Netherlands, South Africa,
Hong Kong and Japan.
The overall winning team will
be determined by combined
points across the two days of
competition.
Bonus point win for Wave
• By Gordon Findlater
SUMNER HAD the perfect start
to their Hawkins Cup campaign
with a commanding bonus point
win over Linwood at Linfield
Park on Saturday.
Linwood’s front row may have
featured All Black tighthead prop
Owen Franks. However, they
were no match for the wave who
romped to a 43-14 victory.
Sumner found themselves
trailing midway through the
opening half before taking
command through tries to
Josh Loader (two), Filimoni
Waqainabete (two), William
Saukuru, Tom Crozier, Samuela
Tawake and Tom Ziolo. It gave
Sumner the perfect opening to
their season.
The reserve team nearly had
the perfect start to their season
against Linwood also. After trailing
for the majority of the match
they made a late surge to level
the score at 19-all before coming
within metres of stealing a win.
“We ended up trying to run it
out from our own dead ball line
and ended up getting tackled
into touch 5m from their try line
to end the game,” said Sumner
coach Martin Dodgson.
Sumner are also on the road for
their second game of the season.
This Saturday they face Marist
Albion at Edgar MacIntosh.
REAL ESTATE
Experience the magic of Clifton Hill
20 Tuawera Terrace, Sumner
Price: $980,000
3 bedrooms | 2 bathrooms | 3 toilets | 2 living rooms | 2 car-garage | 4 off-street parks | Listing #FM5389
Homes like this on the middle slopes of
Clifton Hill are seldom available, especially
ones with so many possibilities to make your
own and suit your lifestyle.
Recent revitalisation throughout this
two-level, 3 bedroom home has resulted in
a ready-made opportunity to experience
the joys of this location with dynamic and
breath-taking views from the City and Alps,
to New Brighton and the Pacific right up to
Kaikoura.
Easy drive-on access to the property,
includes a double garage and ample offstreet
parking including a separate space for
boat or caravan parking. The home consists
of 3 bedrooms, all with ample storage, and
the master boasting a walk-in wardrobe and
modern ensuite complete with underfloor
heating. The living area is a great size, opening
out to a huge north-west facing balcony for
optimal sunshine, and also leads through to
the kitchen with its compelling views of the
ocean. The jewel in the crown of this home
us the large upper level space - configurable
as you please - equally rewarding as living
area, enormous bedroom, or even a future
kitchen and dining... and with the best views
of the property to top off the experience.
Outside, a massive back yard sprawls gently
down the hill, with the upper portion easily
made level to accommodate a pool or formal
landscaping and living. For families, this
space is invaluable, including 2 small sheds
that can be used as play houses if desired.
Fruit trees and established planting also
complement the ample size of the section.
Other features of the house include a log
burner in the living area, storage under the
house, new pathways and driveway, and 3
toilets in total. Exposed timber beams add
character to the living spaces, with rimu
floors upstairs adding warmth, along with
new carpets throughout and an additional
heat pump.
Open Home: Wednesdays, Saturdays and
Sundays 11.30am – 12.15pm.
See you at the Open Homes or to arrange
The Canterbury Steam Preservation
Society is holding a Steam
Extravaganza on the Weekend of
14th and 15th April on McLeans
Island Road behind the Airport.
This is regarded as the No. 1 Steam
Event in New Zealand with more
than 25 steam driven vehicles
present.
The Society is responsible for
preserving our heritage with coal
and wood fired boilers that produce
steam. People can see how shiny
pistons drive rods and fly wheels that
are linked together to turn steam into
power.
Working demonstrations will be
held wet or fine between 10am and
2pm because they are in purposely
built buildings. There will be
sawmilling and sheep shearing
inside. Other demonstrations will be
threshing of grain crops, and stone
crushers all driven by steam engines.
At a previous event the comment
was made – “surely people couldn’t do
that work all day”.
One of the major features this year
will be the Model Railway which is 20
metres long. Come and have a look at
this Railway complete with sound and
scenery.
There is a free train ride which loops
1.5 km around the property with two
Entertainment
ADVERTISEMENT
CHOOO CHOOO!!
open sided carriages so you can view
what is going on around you.
Another major attraction is the
Museum which has a number of steam
engines quietly ticking over.
There is plenty of memorability on
display. If the day is wet this is the
perfect place to be.
Children can be entertained by
riding on the miniature train at a cost
of $2.
There will be plenty of food stalls but
no Eftpos and dogs are not allowed.
Entry fee is $15 per adult, Children
under 15 are free.
Come and enjoy the smoke and the
smells from all the steam engines.
To the older generation this brings
back so many memories and for the
younger ones it will show how these
machines worked once upon a time.
Gates will be open at 9am.
