Eastwood fatality prompts
police to warn of high risk
POLICE have stressed the importance of pedestrian safety after a 61-year-old woman was hit by
a car and killed in Eastwood last Saturday.
The fatality occurred
around 2.40 pm at the
intersection of Rutledge
Street and East Parade,
Eastwood and the woman
was rushed to Royal North
Shore Hospital in a critical
condition, where she later
died.
The 62-year-old male
driver was taken to Ryde
Police Station where he
was charged with Dangerous
driving Occasioning
Death and Drive Manner
Dangerous and Negligent
Driving.
He was granted conditional
bail to appear in
Burwood Local Court on
May 30.
The fatality has prompted
police to issue a statement
to urge motorists to be
aware of pedestrians.
“It is easy to become
complacent about safety,
especially on a familiar
route such as on your way
to or from work.
“Taking risks and not being
mindful on the roads
can have serious consequences.
“It’s important to have
your head in the moment
and make safe decisions
when crossing the road.”
The police statement
also urges pedestrians to
take care.
“Before you cross the
road look before you cross.
“Just because someone
else decides to cross,
doesn’t mean it’s safe for
you, make sure you unplug
your earphones and put
away your phone.
“Never assume that an
approaching vehicle can
see you, or will stop for
you.
“Wait until all vehicles
have stopped before you
step off the kerb
“Avoid crossing between
parked cars or at the front
or back of buses and large
vehicles
”At intersections, check
for turning vehicles before
you leave the kerb, and
while you are crossing the
road and wear bright, light
coloured clothing at night
or in reduced visibility conditions.”
Police also urge pedestrians
to use pedestrian
crossings and wait for the
walk signal.
At trac lights don’t enter
the road if vehicles are
moving through the crossing
or if the red don’t walk
signal shows.”
Hunters Hill’s General Manager calls it a day
HUNTERS Hill General Manager Barry Smith will retire this year after
22 years of service to the heritage municipality.
His retirement was announced
last Thursday
night and Hunters Hill
Mayor Mark Bennett has
released this tribute to
him:
“Following a long career
of public service within
Local Government, Council
was advised that General
Manager Barry Smith
will not be renewing his
contract with Hunter’s Hill
Council.
“His retirement becomes
effective in September
this year.
“Mr. Smith not only has
almost 46 years of outstanding
service to Local
Government but has
been a prominent figure
within Hunters Hill for the
past 22 years, providing
strategic leadership
through dicult times.
“He has continued to
provide valuable counsel
to the Council and our
staff.
I want to publicly thank
Barry for his service and
dedication to serving our
community and helping to
grow this Municipality.”
Mr. Smith will perform
the role of General Manager
until September
when the council will seek
to fill the vacancy.
Mayor Bennett concedes
it will be a challenge
to find a replacement
but Mr Smith has
left the council in a strong
position.
“Barry Smith has demonstrated
leadership and
energy during his time at
Hunters Hill and he hands
over a stronger team and
organisation, well positioned
for future opportunities
and his legacy is
one which Council can
build on for a competitive,
focused organisation
which is committed to innovation
and investment
in the community service
and infrastructure that are
at the heart of this Municipality.”
Mr Smith told The Weekly
Times he will spend his
retirement helping to look
after a new grandchild
and on gardening.
He leaves Hunters Hill
with many friends.
“Those of us who know
Barry personally admire
him not only for his business
efforts but also or
his personal lifetime values
as a devoted husband,
father and soon to
be grandfather,” Mayor
Bennett said.”
