Welcome 

Welcome to the 24th annual Airbourne: Eastbourne International Airshow. 

From the iconic Battle of Britain to the tremendous RAF Typhoon, we 

have a brilliant four days in store for you at this award-winning 

Airshow and event calendar favourite. 

One of this year’s highlights will undoubtedly 

be the long awaited return of the Boeing B-17 

Flying Fortress, which has been absent from 

Eastbourne’s skies since 2001. 

The magnificent aircraft, known as Sally B, is 

the only flying B-17 in the UK and is set to be a 

significant point of interest for many. 

We are also thrilled to be welcoming the North 

American Bronco and the Great War Display 

Team to the Airshow for the very first time. 

Much loved favourites will of course return 

including the RAF Red Arrows, Chinook and 

The Blades display team amongst many more. 

Whilst visiting the Airshow this year, don’t 

forget to enjoy some of our great attractions 

including the Redoubt Fortress with their 

fantastic Seaside Holiday Exhibition and 

discover summer holidays in Eastbourne from 

yesteryear. Or see an exclusive film screening 

of the 1969 classic, Battle of Britain, some of 

which was filmed over Eastbourne, on Friday 

evening in the unique surroundings of the 

Napoleonic Fortress. See page 52. 

Following last year’s success the live music 

Beach Stage will return to the heart of the 

event and we cannot wait to host British girl 

group Stooshe, who will be performing their 

brand new single for us on Saturday evening. 

The stage is also home to a strong programme 

of local talent, including X Factor contestant 

Chloe Paige. Our skies will light up on Sunday 

with a special twilight display from the Fireflies 

pyro-aerobatic team, before a glittering 

firework finale, promising to send the Airshow 

off with a bang on Sunday night! 

My special thanks go to all of our sponsors, to

the local Rotary Clubs and individual collectors

represented here at Eastbourne Airshow 2016... 

I would like to welcome you to our dedicated 

seafront exhibition zone on the Western Lawns. 

Once again we are very grateful to Eastbourne 

Borough Council for their invitation to join this 

prestigious, annual event celebrated both in 

the air and on the ground. 

The UK Armed Forces have undergone, and 

continue to implement, some significant 

changes to transform the way that they 

operate in an ever changing and challenging 

environment both now and in the future, to 

play a pivotal role in providing security and 

support for UK interests not only at home but 

also in a wider global environment. 

Many of you will be aware of the general role 

undertaken by the three Services but may not 

be aware of the many constituent parts that 

contribute to this exciting global role. The 

Royal Navy, British Army and Royal Air Force 

welcome you to come along to our various 

individual exhibition areas to talk to our men 

and women about the lifestyle, pay, 

professional training and career opportunities, 

both as Regular and Reserve personnel in a fast 

moving and exciting modern UK Armed Forces 

working environment.

The operation of remote controlled devices on and around the site 

of Eastbourne International Airshow including Drones is forbidden 

by the Civil Aviation Authority and Eastbourne Borough Council. 

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES AT AIRBOURNE 

In the event of an emergency at Airbourne there will be messages 

relayed on the Public Address system. Please listen to these 

carefully and follow the instructions of police officers and the 

event stewards in yellow tabards. Should the seafront need to be 

evacuated this should take place in an orderly fashion and will 

be in a north west or east direction on the designated routes or 

as directed by Sussex Police. YOU SHOULD NOT RE-ENTER THE 

CLEARED AREA UNTIL INSTRUCTED THAT IT IS SAFE TO DO SO. 

At all times please adhere to all warning notices, comply with the 

instructions from stewards and stay behind any barrier and fence 

lines as these are there for your own safety.

Celebrating 

Eastbourne’s Aviation Heritage 

Eastbourne is home to a rich aviation history. It has 

been more than 100 years since Eastbourne’s flying 

school opened and 81 years since pioneering aviator, 

Sir Alan Cobham staged his Astra Airshow. 

Eastbourne’s Aviation Company was founded back 

in 1909 by Frederick Bernard Fowler who opened the 

Eastbourne Flying School in 1911. Interestingly, the 

factory for building Seaplanes was located by the 

Sovereign Centre on Royal Parade with the landing 

field covering acres of land stretching across St 

Anthony’s Avenue, Langney Rise and Sevenoaks Road 

in Eastbourne. The company made 252 aircraft in 

Eastbourne and repaired many more during the first 

World War. 

Flying overhead during the 1930’s was the 

revolutionary Amy Johnson, the first female pilot 

to ever fly solo from Britain to Australia. She often 

took flight from the Wilmington Aerodrome in 

Sussex, which closed back in 1939. 2016 will mark

75 years since Amy died. Today visitors can see the 

airfield grounds close to the well-known Long Man of 

Wilmington on the outskirts of Eastbourne. 

Playing a major role in the Second World War was 

Friston’s RAF Aerodrome first established in 1940. 

The military airfield was situated slightly inland from 

Cuckmere Haven and Seven Sisters and was capable of 

accommodating around 100 aircraft at a time. Aircraft 

as large as the RAF Avro Lancaster and the USAAF 

Boeing B-17 could safely land there, and the site was 

also home to British icons Supermarine Spitfire and the 

Hawker Hurricane. The Spitfire and Lancaster aircraft 

are both celebrating anniversaries this year with the 

Spitfire commemorating 80 years since its first flight 

while the Lancaster 75 years. Both aircraft can be seen at 

Airbourne this year. 

During both the World Wars Eastbourne’s iconic Beachy 

Head landmark with it’s prominent white cliffs were 

many of the airmen’s last sight of England before they 

crossed over into enemy territory. A memorial marks this 

spot today to honour the men of the Bomber Command, 

and pay tribute to those that fought in the war.

RED 

Arrows 

The RAF Aerobatic Team, the Red Arrows, is the public face of 

the Royal Air Force. Displaying since 1965, with their trademark 

combination of close formation flying and dynamic loops and rolls, 

they are an Airshow favourite. 

The team’s BAE Systems Hawk T1 jets carry 

a Union flag-inspired tailfin design that 

emphasises the team’s role as an ambassador 

for the UK. The Squadron is commanded by 

Wing Commander Martin Higgins and the 

nine-aircraft aerobatic display team is led by 

Red 1, Squadron Leader David Montenegro. 

Each of the pilots has previous fast-jet 

operational experience flying the Tornado or 

the Typhoon. 

The team’s 110-strong ground crew are known 

as the Blues because of the colour of their 

display coveralls and include skilled engineers, 

drivers, suppliers and other personnel. 

Based at RAF Scampton in Lincolnshire, the 

Red Arrows had completed more than 4,700 

displays, in 56 countries, by the start of 

2016 – the team’s 52nd season. 

Bringing a display together takes months of

Battle

Britain 

MEMORIAL FLIGHT 

Today the Battle of Britain Memorial 

Flight (BBMF) is a household name 

and a national institution with 

a long established tradition of 

marking the end of World War II and 

those who bravely fought in it as a 

mark of respect. 

Wing Commander Peter Thompson DFC, then 

Station Commander at Biggin Hill, Kent, was 

primarily responsible for the formation of 

what we now know as the BBMF. After gaining 

his pilot’s wings in the summer of 1940, Peter 

flew Hurricanes during the Battle of Britain. 

By the mid-1950s Hurricane IIC LF363 was the 

only airworthy representative of its type with 

the RAF and was based at Biggin Hill. This gave 

Peter the basis for a grander plan. 

From humble beginnings there is now a 

dedicated unit, entrusted with caring for 

priceless assets of British aviation heritage, 

keeping the last remaining examples of the 

legendary fighters which had won the Battle of 

Britain – the Hurricane and Spitfire – in the air. 

The BBMF display consists of the following 

aircraft: Spitfire, Hurricane, Lancaster, 

Chipmunk and the Dakota. Displaying 

at Airbourne this year will be the Spitfire, 

Hurricane and Lancaster.

Chinook 

HC4 

The Chinook Display Team return 

for 2016 to Airbourne with a 

display on the Boeing Chinook HC4. 

The sequence will combine some of the 

previous years’ award winning sequences with 

new and exciting high energy manoeuvres 

which will demonstrate the versatility and 

manoeuvrability of such a large aircraft. 

The Chinook Display Team is made up of 

personnel from 18 and 27 Squadrons based 

at RAF Odiham in Hampshire. 

It is used primarily for trooping and for 

carrying internal and/or underslung loads. 

Secondary roles include search and rescue 

and casualty evacuation. 

The aircraft are well equipped for their varied 

roles and are fitted with a satellite Global 

Positioning System, an Instrument Landing 

System, comprehensive avionics that enable 

them to fly in airways, and an extensive radio 

suite. The aircraft cockpit has full night-time 

capability when operated with night-vision 

goggles. It is the only Helicopter in the 

fleet to boast a fully armoured cabin for its 

occupants and can be armed with two M134 

six-barrelled Mini-guns. 

It is continually being modified and upgraded 

to keep it at the forward edge of the 

battlefield and has been involved in most of 

the recent UK operations.

Typhoon FGR4 

When you see the Typhoon performing at this 

year’s Airshow it will be the culmination of 

months of hard work, detailed preparation 

and concerted effort by the team 

behind the display. 

This year’s team, from 29(R) Squadron, 

comprises a specialist from every aircraft 

trade along with support and management 

teams to assist both the pilot and the trades, 

all of whom work closely together to bring 

you the dazzling spectacle that is the 

Typhoon Display. 

The Typhoon will arrive at Airbourne low and 

fast – listen out for the unmistakable roar! 

2016’s display sequence includes Aileron 

Rolls, the Hesitation Roll, the Dirty Barrel Roll, 

Configured Barrel Roll and, the distinctive 

Velocity Vector Roll where the aircraft 

appears to skid around the sky followed by 

high speed passes, all to give you a unique 

view of the aircraft. Look out 

for the ¼ Clover manoeuvres which give 

a stunning silhouette of the aircraft. The 

aircraft will be pointed at the crowd before 

breaking away into the second Velocity 

Vector Roll. At the end of the display the 

Typhoon will rocket skyward as pilot Mark 

performs three Aileron Rolls in the climb 

to 9000ft. 

In 2008 the Typhoon became the first and 

only current Royal Air Force fast jet to be 

declared Multi-Role capable and can deliver 

weapons quickly with a very high degree of 

accuracy and will provide the backbone of 

RAF fast jet operations for many years 

to come.

on some displays. 


Formed in 1988 the team were 

originally called The Wombats. 

A team with an ad hoc collection of 

aircraft including five SE5as, two 

Fokker Dr1s and a Fokker D7, many 

of them flown by their builders. 

The Team currently has five different 

types of aircraft available to fly, with 

nine in total. 

At Airbourne this year you can see 

this spectacular nine aircraft dogfight 

routine, a spectacle which makes it’s 

first appearance at Eastbourne. 

Avro 504 

The Avro 504 makes its 

debut with the team in 2016. 

This beautiful Avro 504 replica 

was built under licence in Argentina from 

original plans. 

Sopwith Triplane 

The team’s Sopwith Triplane is a replica of N500, the 

first Triplane prototype which first flew in June 1916 

with the Royal Naval Air Service. 

Fokker Dr1 Triplane 

The Dr1 was a direct attempt to copy the successful 

Sopwith Triplane. Armed with two forward firing 

Spandau machine guns, it was highly manoeuvrable, 

and was a favourite mount of a number of German 

aces such as Werner Voss and the legendary Manfred 

von Richthofen. 

Royal Aircraft Factory BE2c 

The BE2c was designed and built in 1912 and was 

Britain’s first-ever military aeroplane. This aircraft is 

a replica BE-2c commissioned in 1969 by the makers 

of the film ‘Biggles Sweeps the Skies’! 

Royal Aircraft Factory SE5a 

The RAF SE5, originally with a 150HP direct-drive 

Hispano-Suiza engine, first flew in November 1916. 

There are three SE5as in the Team, built from 

replica plans. 

Junkers CL1 

The Junkers CL1 was a ground-attack aircraft with 

an extended fuselage to carry a gunner, first flying in 

1917. The only two-seaters in the team and one of 

the occupants is a dummy!

by Saunders-Roe (“Saro”) of Cowes and 

Southampton, in the United Kingdom. Take 

a look at this version on the Western Lawns. 

23. The Royal Navy Historic Flight 

Established at the Royal Naval Air Station 

Yeovilton in 1972 in order to preserve Naval 

heritage, and to be a living memorial to all 

Fleet Air Arm personnel, especially those 

who gave their lives in maintaining the 

freedom of our nation. Come along and find 

out about the service.

Bristol 

The Bristol Blenheim’s history is long 

and an important milestone in the 

history of British aviation. 

A truly unique British aircraft, it has been 

repaired to carry into the future a lasting 

flight heritage and living memorial for 

the nation. Built in 1934 it was the fastest 

light bomber of the day. The crews liked 

the Blenheims and Winston Churchill paid 

homage to their bravery comparing them to 

the ‘Charge of the Light Brigade’ 

After a five year long restoration in June 

1983, this aircraft, became once again 

internationally known as the only flying 

example of an early war RAF light bomber. 

One of only two British WWII bombers 

flying, the RAF Lancaster being the other, it 

featured in many air shows, films, television 

broadcasts and magazine articles. 

The Aircraft Restoration Company at 

Duxford have completed this latest 

restoration using old aeroplane 

manufacturing skills, many of which are now 

lost to the nation bringing this truly British 

aircraft to the airshow circuit this year.

Spitfire 

MK9 

This Spitfire on display at 

Airbourne is one of the 

finest examples of a Mk 9 

Spitfire still flying today. 

Built as a single-seat LFlX fighter in 1944 

at the Castle Bromwich factory of Vickers 

Supermarine, she is today piloted by John 

Romain of the Aircraft Restoration Company. 

The Tr.9 Spitfires were typically used to train 

pilots for the IAC Seafire fleet. Although the 

MK9 Spitfire was primarily a trainer, it was 

equipped with two .303 Browning machine 

guns, one in each outer wing bay. 

This Tr9 has had an interesting history, used 

for filming and with many re-paints and 

owners. She has also seen major rebuilds 

where the aircraft was restored as a two 

seater, but with a modified rear canopy 

arrangement. And again after 2000, with the 

Aircraft Restoration Company and Historic 

Flying Ltd. (HFL) she was converted back to 

the original configuration with the bubble 

top rear canopy.

Sally B 

Built as a Boeing B-17G-105-VE 

c/n 8693, the future Sally B was one 

of the last to be constructed. 

Accepted by the United States Army Air Force 

(USAAF) in June 1945, it was too late to see war 

service but was used for research roles during 

which a man-carrying pod on the starboard 

wingtip was added! Later returned to standard 

configuration, no details have ever emerged of 

the trials which this aircraft was involved in. 

Businessman and pilot, Ted White brought her 

to Britain to the Imperial War Museum Duxford, 

in 1975, to begin a new life as Sally B, named 

after Ted’s long-time companion Elly Sallingboe. 

An engineering support group and operating 

base at Duxford were set up, and eventually a 

Supporters Club to keep her in flying condition. 

Sally B became the official flagship of the 

American Air Museum in Britain, part of the 

Imperial War Museum complex. 

Fundraising efforts and dedication of her team 

continue to preserve the aircraft for future 

generations and as a memorial to the 79,000 

US airmen who died fighting in the skies over 

Europe between 1942 and 1945. Sally B’s role 

as the USAAF 8th Air Force Memorial Flight and 

her rarity, not only as an airworthy example, but 

also as the only flying B-17 in the UK, make her 

a very important part of aviation history.

Bronco 

OV-10B 

During recent years this aircraft has 

displayed at various events from 

Scotland to the Czech Republic where 

thousands of people enjoyed the sight 

and sound of this unique aircraft. It 

makes its debut at Airbourne this year 

The North American Aviation Rockwell 

OV-10 Bronco is a turboprop light attack and 

observation aircraft. It was developed in the 

1960s for counter insurgency combat. One of 

its primary missions was as a forward air control 

aircraft in the Vietnam War. 

The OV-10B variant was produced for Germany 

to use as target tug. After a long career the 

Bronco was replaced by the Pilatus PC-9 in 

1990 and all aircraft were retired. 

The German Wing of the OV-10 Bronco 

Association (GWOBA) was formed in 2000 and 

chaired by Tony DeBruyn of Eureka Aviation 

(Belgium), the display pilot to bring the Bronco 

to full restoration. Bronco “99+18” successfully 

completed its maiden flight in May 2012 

displaying at airshows from 2014. Bronco 

“99+32” made its first flight on July 11th, 2007 

at Duxford following a 6 year restoration period. 

Bronco “99+26” arrived in Duxford in 2001 and 

restoration works commenced with significant 

work on the airframe and landing gear 

completed, and the further restoration back 

to flying conditions is still in process.

MiG-15 

“Red 18” 

This aircraft is a Polish-built SB 

Lim-2 (MiG-15UTI), produced in 

1952 and is operated by the 

Norwegian Air Force Historical 

Squadron as a representative of 

the Cold War ‘enemy’. 

This aircraft was a fighter trainer with some 

18,000 produced from 1949. The prototype 

MiG-15 first flew in December 1947. 

Its service ended in 1990 when it was 

exported to the USA but returned to Europe 

in the summer of 2014. Given the shared 

border between north-eastern Norway 

and Russia, and the many encounters 

between Royal Norwegian Air Force and 

Soviet aircraft during the Cold War, the 

Polish MiG is an appropriate addition to the 

Norwegian Air Force Historical Squadron. 

The aircraft is painted and marked as “RED 

18” to represent Russian-Soviet pilot and 

cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin, a MiG-15 fighter 

pilot and the first human to journey into 

outer space in 1961.

Vampires 

The Norwegian Air Force Historical 

Squadron will be displaying three 

of their magnificent aircraft at 

this year’s Airbourne, the MiG-15 

(see over) and a pair of Vampires. 

The de Havilland DH.100 Vampire was a British 

jet fighter commissioned by the Royal Air 

Force during the Second World War. Although 

it arrived too late to see combat during the 

war, the Vampire served with front line RAF 

squadrons until 1953 and continued in use 

as a trainer until 1966. The Vampire also 

served with many air forces worldwide, setting 

aviation firsts and records. 

On display at today’s Airbourne is D.H Vampire 

FB.52, an export version of the Mk 6. 101 

were built and were in use from 1949 to 1957. 

Also the de Havilland Vampire T.55, an export 

version of the DH 115 trainer in RAF service 

and in use from 1952 to 1955. Both Vampires 

on display today were built in Switzerland in 

the 50’s and are now in the Royal Norwegian 

Air Force markings to represent Vampire PX-K/ 

PX-M, serving at the 336 squadron in the early 

50s, Norway’s first pure jet fighter squadron.

DISPLAY TEAM 

The Tigers are the flagship team 

for the Princess of Wales’s Royal 

Regiment, whose seniority stems 

from the Tangier Regiment of 1661! 

See these experienced 

parachutists drop onto the beach and 

sea, smoke trailing, flags flying, performing 

amazing formations both in the air and under 

the parachute. The Tigers have many display 

routines, all dynamic in style and will hold you 

captivated throughout the entire routine. 

The team was formed in 1986 and originally 

known as “The Flying Dragons”, a legacy that 

still continues to this day. 

The Tigers, lead by Captain Ian Wicks, have 

performed at many events as far a field as 

Berlin, Kosovo, Cyprus, and more recently at 

the opening of the birthday celebrations for 

Her Majesty Queen Margrethe ll of Denmark. 

The team now provide additional support to 

the Army with an active role in recruitment 

and image promotion.

Fireflies 

AEROBATIC DISPLAY TEAM 

The FireFlies consist of two Vans RV4 

aircraft flown by Pilots Jon Gowdy 

and Andy Durston performing a 

twilight and afternoon show at this 

year’s Airbourne. 

The display features a combination of 

close formation aerobatics, opposition and 

synchro flying in a special dusk display using 

pyrotechnics or white smoke for the 

afternoon show. 

The Van’s series of sport aircraft are by a long 

way, the most successful line of build-it-yourself 

kit planes on the planet. Well over 9,000 RV’s 

have taken to the skies around the world and the 

RV4’s that the team fly are a development of the 

original, single seat RV3. 

Weighing in at an empty weight of 

approximately 500kg, the RV4 is about a third 

the weight of a VW Golf but fitted with a 5.3 Litre 

160HP engine giving it performance like a hotrod. 

Normal cruising speed is about 160 mph but 

during the display the Fireflies make the most of 

the entire flight envelope and will be travelling 

at everything from zero to over 200 mph.

B-25 

The B-25N ‘Mitchell’ (PH-XXV) 

is a medium bomber that was 

developed by the US Army at 

the end of the 1930’s. 

Named after the American General Billy 

Mitchell, it served on many fronts during 

World War Two. The Dutch Government were 

the first foreign recipient of the bomber and 

it stayed in active duty until 1954. 

The Royal Netherlands Air Force Historical 

Flight Foundation (in Dutch ‘Stichting 

Koninklijke Luchtmacht Historische Vlucht’ 

or SKHV), was first started in 1969 by a 

group of former Air Force and Navy fighter 

pilots to provide private pilots with the 

possibility of advanced flying training. 

From 1976 it has dedicated itself to the 

restoration of propeller-driven aircraft 

formerly used by the Royal Netherlands Air 

Force and Navy. It has now grown into a 

leading aircraft museum with an impressive 

fleet of historical aircraft including the 

impressive B-25 Mitchell on display here 

today, purchased in 1989 to keep the 

memory of Dutch aircrews alive.

P-51 

MUSTANG 

“Jumpin Jacques” is a P-51D-20-NA 

model, built at North American’s 

Inglewood facility in California and 

accepted by the USAAF in 1944. 

She entered combat with the 15th Air Force 

in 1945 flying on bomber escort and ground 

attack sweeps over Germany, Austria and 

Czechoslovakia. 

After the war she was placed into storage 

and later prepared for service with Air 

National Guard units during the Korean 

War. During this period she had the wording 

“U.S. Air Force” above the serial number 

on the fin and the Buzz Number “FF-035” 

applied to the fuselage below the cockpit, 

evidence still visible in the metalwork to this 

day. In 1953 she was placed into storage to 

await disposal but was eventually sold and 

given a new civilian US registration. 

In 1989 she was owned and operated by 

Jacques Bourret of Aero Retro based at St 

Rambert. When looking for a colour scheme 

for the P-51, Jacques came upon the photo 

of a Mustang named “Jumpin Jacques” and 

adopted this as the new scheme. Today 

she proudly forms part of the Hangar 11 

collection.

Jet 

The Jet Provost Display Team owns 

and operates Jet Provost T3 XN637 

(G-BKOU) as part of the Classic 

Jet Preservation Group and will be 

displaying a pair of Jet Provost today. 

Jet Provost T.3 XN637 was issued to No 3 Flying 

Training School (3FTS), based at RAF Leeming 

and remained in service until 1963 when she 

was placed in storage for nearly 10 years. 

During 1978 restoration began and in July 1995 

moved to North Weald joining other examples 

of warbirds and classic jets based on the airfield. 

She was re-sprayed into a new red/blue/white 

colour scheme in 2004 and later acquired by 

“The Classic Jet Preservation Group”. 

XW324 was built as the 38th Jet Provost T.5. 

and entered service with 3FTS at RAF Leeming 

in 1970’. From August 2000 she was a regular 

at UK airshows, eventually purchased by the 

current owner Jeff Bell in 2007. XW324 has 

received continuous refurbishment work to 

bring her to a condition as close as possible 

(without a total rebuild) to that when she rolled 

off the production line in 1970.

Team 

Raven 

Team Raven are a formation aerobatic display 

team that formed in May 2014. In their second 

display season, they aim to continue on the 

successes and their reputation built to date. 

They are the phoenix to the disbandment 

of Team Osprey and Team Viper, the 

former a Yak 52 team which consisted 

of Bob Oliver (now the Team Raven 

commentator), Steve Lloyd and Barry 

Gwynnett followed by Gerald Williams and 

Mark Southern, also from Team Viper with 

their RV8’s and Simon Shirley with his RV4. 

The Ravens use Van’s RV aircraft with a 

mix of one RV4 and four RV8s. All are self 

build aircraft, albeit only Ravens 2 and 4 

have been self built by the Team. They are 

fully aerobatic with a good ‘g’-limit range 

and aerobatic ability and have even been 

modified with smoke systems. 

Entirely self-funded, the Team has striven 

to create a professional and effective 

display team. The choice of aircraft is 

purely down to the vision of Steve.

The Blades celebrated their 

10th display season in 2015 and 

since 2006 have flown over 500 

displays throughout the UK, 

Europe and the Middle-East. 

A leading display team of former Red 

Arrow pilots, The Blades are renowned for 

breath-taking formation aerobatics within 

their cutting-edge display. 

The display itself is designed to showcase 

the amazing capabilities of the Extra 300, 

combined with the skill, experience and 

heritage of the pilots to deliver the ultimate 

in aerial excellence. The display lasts for 15 

minutes and includes over 30 exhilarating 

manoeuvres. Containing a variety of 

mind-blowing aerobatic stunts flown just 

feet apart. 

The Blades have over 30,000 flying hours 

and more than 4,000 displays between 

them and are flying once again under the 

leadership of Blade 1, Mark ‘Cutty’ Cutmore. 

The Blade 2 position will be shared between 

Chris Carder and Ben Murphy with Kirsty 

Murphy and Myles Garland sharing the 

Blade 3 position with Andy Evans as Blade 4.

Breitling 

WINGWALKERS 

UK based AeroSuperBatics have 

been specialists in display flying for 

over 30 years and operate one of 

the best known and loved civilian 

air display acts in Europe. 

The wingwalkers perform a breath-taking 

sequence of acrobatic manoeuvres and 

handstands whilst strapped to the top wings 

of the team’s beautiful, vintage 1940’s Boeing 

Stearman biplanes in a striking Breitling livery. 

The team pilots fly the aircraft through a 

well rehearsed energetic routine of dazzling 

aerobatics and close formation flypasts as the 

wingwalkers wave at the crowd. 

Wingwalking dates back to when young flying 

aces returned from the First World War addicted 

to the thrill of flying. After the war, surplus 

aircraft was cheap to buy, so they were purchased 

by these pilots who would thrill crowds with their 

aerial antics. These pilots began to persuade their 

girlfriends to walk out along their biplanes linen 

wings and this was the 

start of wingwalking.

recreate the fearless glamour of 

those pioneering years.

Do your bit.... 

A little goes a long way… 

To help secure the future of this free event we 

need your support, and we ask again for your 

generosity. Your kind donations are crucial to 

keep the airshow flying and also do good things 

for local charities too. 

30% of donations will go to three charities: 

Children with Cancer Fund, Missing People and 

You Raise Me Up. 

The Children with Cancer fund, grants wishes 

to children who have, or have had cancer. 

Wishes can be practical, medial or fun and are 

there to support families too. From a new bike 

to swimming with dolphins, the money raised 

today can make a huge difference to their lives. 

The charity also supports local hospitals and 

community nurses who assist in the care of 

children under their remit. 

Missing People is the only charity in the UK 

dedicated to bringing missing children and 

adults back together with their families. The 

non-profit organisation provides free and 

confidential 24-hour help 365 days a year, whilst 

campaigning to improve the emotional, practical 

and legal support that missing people and their 

families should receive. 

Finally, You Raise Me Up is a charity committed 

to raising funds to support families who have 

suffered the loss of an adult child between 

the age of 16 and 25. Counselling support, 

emotional help and financial aid are just the 

basis of what the charity is capable of offering to 

those in need. It relies entirely on donations, to 

help continue the service. 

Donation points are located across the event site 

(see map on page 6 for locations) plus Rotary 

and EHA Volunteers will be walking the 

site ready to collect your kind donations. 

Thank you to Don Perman and Steve Newman 

who are co-ordinating the bucket collections 

this year, with Eastbourne, Eastbourne AM, 

Eastbourne Sovereign and Beachy Head Rotary 

Clubs, whose members are also providing much 

needed support. 

Our thanks also go to Southern Railway for 

their support in adding Eastbourne Station 

as a collection point this year. 

Please give generously to the circulating bucket 

collections at the event, a little definitely goes a
