Working with clay in a direct and personal way is deeply connecting. My forms are
made using simple processes (coiling, pinching, smoke firing) which allow me to
work spontaneously and with the elements. The work varies in scale from large
sculptural forms based on monoliths, to simple tiny bowls made in the palm of my
hand under a full moon or beneath a tree. Embracing imperfection is important, to
create unique pieces that sing in their own space.
Clay is a very receptive medium and I work with large, universal themes - death,
rebirth, and the interface where the sacred meets the domestic. Universal symbols
and patterns find their way into surface decoration
until it’s hard to place the pieces in a historical or
cultural framework.
Ultimately, it’s the process of making that excites me
the most. Each piece provides a gift in the form of
a journey rooted in the rhythm of history. They are
markers of time, humanity and mystery.
“I study the invisible as much as I study the
appearance. I resort to forms of expression
suitable to the subject so my work is not much
bound to style or medium. As for the inspiration
I am very much taken by the splendour of
transience.”
