During the overnight camp, the girls listened
to guest speakers, EGG co-founders
Lucy Tothill and Gussie Cohen, who are
St Margaret’s old girls. They have had
first-hand experiences in countries such as
Malawi, Tajikistan and Somalia.
The EGG charity was recently granted
VILLA MARIA College has teamed up
with the city council to help those affected
by Cyclone Gita in Tonga.
Students at the college have fundraised
$1000 and the city council has chipped
in by donating 50 desktop computers
and monitors under its Computers to the
Community Scheme.
After seeing an item on the news about
the damage caused to the schools in Tonga,
city council staff contacted the college
to see if its students would be interested
charitable trust status. Head girl Jemima
Vaughan said it was “super exciting” to see
girls getting involved and supporting the
school charity. “It gives them some perspective
of worldwide issues and sits really
well with our school theme for the year,
‘everyday superstars’, which is centred
around service and kindness.”
Villa students, city council
help Tonga cyclone recovery
in sending over some computers to the
affected schools.
The city council felt this was a nice way
to acknowledge the kindness and support
that Tonga gave to Christchurch following
the February 22, 2011, earthquake.
Sister of Mercy Monika Mo’ale, who is
associated with the college, organised the
computers to be sent over with a shipping
container of donated goods.
The shipping container left New Zealand
on Friday.
