WEST MELTON School<br />

has been celebrating the<br />

success of some of its<br />

pupils.<br />

For the school’s final assembly<br />

of the term recently<br />

it presented swimming<br />

cups to its winning champions.<br />

The winning champions<br />

were Ted for senior boys’,<br />

Kaitlyn for senior girls’,<br />

Brooklyn and Chase for<br />

junior boys’ and Elissa for<br />

the junior girls’ category.<br />

Ted and Elissa also took<br />

part in the Canterbury<br />

Swimming Championships<br />

in Rolleston where<br />

they were happy with their<br />

results.<br />

Meanwhile, an invention<br />

by one of the school’s<br />

pupils has been selected in<br />

a design competition.<br />

It comes after Ms Trappitt<br />

made a presentation<br />

to the school’s year 5 and 6<br />

pupils about “the engineering<br />

of sculptures,” in 2016.<br />

From this presentation<br />

she set up the design competition<br />

with the support<br />

of principal Sue Jackson.<br />

Learners produced<br />

drawings or prototypes<br />

and a group of finalists<br />

presented their designs<br />

to Ms Trappitt and Mrs<br />

Jackson for judging. Otis’<br />

design was selected.<br />

Ms Trappitt project<br />

managed, engineered and<br />

partly funded the fabrication<br />

of the sculpture.<br />

Placemakers Hornby<br />

supplied the support structure<br />

materials.<br />

Avon City Ford panel<br />

and paint gave the sculpture<br />

a professional paint<br />

job to withstand the elements.<br />

It was organised by Cam<br />

Seaward who is the husband<br />

of a former teacher at<br />

the school.<br />
