kilmacolm & quarriers 30 kilmacolm & quarriers Let's hear from our Councillors Cllr Stephen McCabe: PLANNING: The Council’s Environment and Regeneration Committee approved the proposed Local Development Plan for a period of public consultation at a special meeting on 28th March. Council Planners had originally included a site at West of Quarry Drive, Kilmacolm in the proposed plan for a 75 unit private housing development. I successfully persuaded the Committee to remove this site as I was not convinced that the release of greenbelt land for housing at this time was justified. The Committee also agreed to my proposal that if greenbelt land is released for housing development at some point in the future around the Inverclyde villages, then a minimum of 25% of the units should be for social rent. There may well be objections to these and other aspects of the proposed Local Development Plan during the consultation period. Any objections will be examined by the Scottish Government’s Directorate of Planning and Environmental Appeals. ROADS: Ward Councillors have received complaints about speeding on Port Glasgow Road in Kilmacolm. I have asked our officers to discuss with the Police what joint action we can take to address this issue. HERITAGE GALLERY: I am delighted to have been asked to open the new Heritage Gallery in Kilmacolm Community Centre later this month. The Council provided funding of nearly £10,000 towards the costs of this important initiative by Jim Wood and his fellow Directors of the Kilmacolm Heritage Company. Kilmacolm, Quarrier’s Village and the surrounding areas have a rich history. It is important that this history is documented and shared with this and future generations. The Council recently suffered the loss of our Corporate Director for Education, Communities and Organisational Development Wilma Bain at the age of 56 after a brave battle against cancer. Wilma was a hugely popular and successful Director. She was universally liked and respected in equal measure. I will greatly miss her warmth and wise counsel. Easter Day was the one gorgeous day in between weeks of snow, rain and cold. About 50 gathered at The Knapps for the 9.30am celebration with communion. It was so peaceful there, water like glass with beautiful reflections of swans and hills, birds singing, lots of dog walkers, some of whom came to join us. Later there was the Easter service in the Old Kirk, complete with Easter Bonnet and Festive Tie competitions, children rolling their decorated eggs and prizes of chocolate Easter Eggs, as well as the solemn celebration of communion. A warm, friendly and happy morning. Social Events Outlook is a social community group in Kilmacolm that was created to welcome everyone from the whole community, young and old, to come to share friendship and fellowship together. It is led by the Community Issues team of Kilmacolm Old Kirk. The group meets in Kidston Hall on the 1st and 3rd Thursday afternoons monthly. The programme includes invited speakers, afternoon tea, items of community issues for discussion, plus entertaining activities. Programme for May: 3rd May, 2pm-4pm: Gentle Keep Fit with Grace. Back by popular request. 6th May, 6pm: Night Kirk. A reflective service. 17th May, 2pm-4pm: Clydeside Singers – favourite songs by our favourite choir. 19th May: OK Fest (Re-arranged date) Poetry and Literature readings, 2pm - 4pm, The Old Kirk.
