Let's hear from our Councillors
Cllr Audrey Doig:
Many constituents have been contacting me still on the vexed question of the
new 1 and 1a, and 2 and 2a bus services from McGills which replaced the
well established no 8 and no 19. The new service is sponsored by the SPT
and goes from Kilmacolm, Quarriers, Bridge of Weir, Houston, Linwood, and
Johnstone. Given that Johnstone is the largest town in West Renfrewshire
with a population of 17,000 I have continually stressed to McGills that it is
crucial that those without private transport who live in Linwood, Houston,
Crosslee, and Brookfield have easy access to the town for a myriad of
reasons.
What I have also made clear to all those constituents who have contacted
me is that McGills intend to review the new 1 and 1a, 2 and 2a services in six
months time so it is crucial that all village residents ensure the new service
is well used. Many constituents are saying to me that the time when private
bus companies run the roost should be over as they tend to put the needs
of commerce before the needs of communities. I agree with this and indeed
the last full meeting of Renfrewshire Council unanimously agreed that the
Scottish Government should seriously consider allowing us to oversee local
bus services, as was the case prior to 1986.
The Community Councils in my ward, and indeed many other community
groups, will be familiar with the Local Area Committees which Renfrewshire
Council established in 2007 to dispense grants to local community groups.
This framework has been a great success but there have been a few good
reasons to review their structures and how they operate.
Up until now Houston, Crosslee, and Brookfield have been in the same LAC
as large conurbations like Linwood and Erskine, under the new LAC structure
the villages in my ward will now be in the same LAC as other villages such
as Kilbarchan, Howwood, and Lochwinnoch. I think this is a positive move
as there should be a greater focus on the requirements and needs of our
village communities across Renfrewshire.
THE BLUE PLANET
Saturday 12th May 12.30pm at the
Church West Halls
This years theme is The Blue Planet
and we are hoping to emphasise
the importance of environmental
issues, promoting awareness of local
recycling, avoiding waste of any kind
and generally being conscious of our
surroundings and helping others to do what they can.
With many of our usual stalls, and a few new ones too - a nearly new clothes
stall for under fives, a home produce stall with preserves in glass jars etc, and
a church stall for information on Church activities and organizations.
Remember the parade and get your group or organization in and display your
efforts to save the planet - It's a fantastic way of encouraging people to get
involved in the community!
All proceeds from this years Carnival will be for the Church and the
Community.
