Renfrewshire athletes
set sail for Special
Olympics World
Games 2019
The entire Team Special Olympics Great Britain
(SOGB) sailing squad for the World Games in
2019 is set to be made up of athletes training in
Renfrewshire.
Lewis Nicholson (Paisley), Michael Kelly (Paisley), Jamie Kearns (Clydebank), Shannon McGhee
(Clydebank), Laura Carrick (Helensburgh, Lothian) and Darren MacGregor (Glasgow) will travel to Abu
Dhabi as part of a delegation of 129 athletes set to represent Great Britain.
All six of the athletes who will make up the sailing squad train at Castle Semple and this will form their
base for their preparations for the World Games next year - supported
by the coaching team at Castle Semple.
Councillor Andy Steel, Chair of the Clyde Muirshiel Joint Committee,
said: “It is a fantastic honour for these athletes to be chosen to represent
Team SOGB at the World Games and this comes after a fantastic
performance in Sheffield where they won two silvers and a bronze.
“We’re extremely proud that these young people are training and
learning at the top class accessible facilities we have at Castle Semple
and we will do all we can to facilitate them as they prepare to face the
best athletes from across the world.”
The Special Olympics World Summer Games is the biggest global
event for athletes with intellectual (learning) disabilities and takes place
every four years.
Team SOGB are one of 168 countries taking part and around 7,000
athletes from around the globe will compete in 24 different sports
between 14-21 March 2019.
How to beat cravings
By Lesley Handley, FitSmart Fitness Ltd
I can’t take your cravings away, nor can I make you crave lettuce and
spinach instead of chocolate and cakes. I can however suggest some
ways to help reduce them a little bit for you, hopefully allowing you to put
up a challenge against them.
1. Don’t ignore them. If you crave a food, the only sure-fire way to get
rid of that craving is to eat it. I wouldn’t suggest stopping eating the
foods you like completely, as it will never work. You end up craving
it more and more and when you eventually give in you eat up more
of it than they would have done initially.
2. Drink plenty of water. Thirst can often be confused with hunger or
food cravings. If you feel thirsty your body is already in an early
stage of dehydration. You want to do this consistently throughout the
day, every day.
3. Consume more protein. Protein helps you feel fuller and satisfied
for longer. So, meals that have a higher protein content can stem
of cravings that can usually kick in not long after you have eaten.
Studies have shown that an increase in protein can reduce cravings
by up to 50%.
4. Avoid letting yourself get extremely hungry. We have all done it, you
go to the supermarket when you are hungry, and you leave with food
items higher in fat, sugar and salt. Hunger can be one of the biggest
reasons we experience cravings. Eat regularly throughout the day.
5. Don’t buy it. Keep your worst craved food items at a distance. If it
isn’t in the house – you can’t eat it. Even if you put something in a tin,
at the back of the tallest cupboard, it is still there and accessible.
6. Look at alternatives. Can you consume an alternative food that is
lower in calories and fat/sugar? For example, if you crave chocolate
digestives… would a non-chocolate digestive stem the craving? If
you crave a jam filled doughnut… would a ring doughnut stem the
craving?
