MAY 2018
May is my favourite time of year; I love warmer
weather, being able to do more in the day as the
nights draw out, and it’s also my birth month!
This year, in particular, May will be very special
as I am also celebrating two hen parties before
my wedding next month. So I want to say a
special thank you to everyone organising those
for me.
This month, I had the pleasure of interviewing
Nadine Coyle, former Girls Aloud member. We
had a great chat about her new EP, her passion
for empowering women and motherhood. Read it
in full from pages 22-27.
I was also lucky enough to speak with the very
talented singer-songwriter Frank Turner, about his
new tour and album, ‘Be More Kind’. It was great
to talk about the importance of lyrics; in fact, the
conversation got pretty deep, much like Frank’s
songs! You can listen to these interviews at
www.youtube.com/bouncemagazineuk.
We have a food and drink special in this edition,
as we feature some of the regions top food and
drink suppliers. Don’t miss the wonderful summer
recipes along with information about the Beccles
Food and Drink Festival and Bury Festival coming
up this month.
Also in this issue, we have two competitions, one
to win tickets to see UB40 at the Bury Festival and
also tickets to see Northern Soul live at The Apex.
We have a special summer advertising package
starting next month to cover your advertising from
June to August. Get in touch for details for our
one off deal.
You can read our features and our online editions
via our website, which can be found at
www.bouncemagazine.co.uk. Why not follow us
on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
Join me next month, when I will be speaking to
past X Factor winner, Matt Cardle.
Our review for May took place at Potters Resort in
Hopton. We were delighted to be invited along to
enjoy one of the resorts ‘all inclusive drink party
night’ packages, I have to confess it was a heavy
weekend, the team and I had so much fun!
Fish Koftas...
BY AWARD WINNING
CHEF ABDUS SHAHID
Prep Time:
25 mins
Cook Time:
40 mins
Perfect for sharing...
These Koftas have an intense yet delicate
flavour, they look great served with an orange
coloured sauce.
Method
1. Bring the milk, cardamom pods, turmeric and
ground cumin to the boil in a heavy-based pan.
Poach the fish fillets in this for three minutes
on either side, drain, discarding the milk, and
transfer to a mixing bowl. Leave to cool. Now
remove the cardamom pods and add the potato.
2. Blend the onion, ginger and green chilli with
1 tbsp of water to a smooth paste in a liquidiser.
Add this to the fish mixture along with all the
other ingredients except the oil. Knead well
together and form into balls, each the size of a
ping-pong ball. If the mixture is sticky, moisten
your hands with water before forming the koftas.
3. Heat the oil for deep-frying in a deep, heavybased
pan or wok until it begins to sizzle. Reduce
the heat and drop the fish balls into the oil a few
at a time, turning them frequently and frying to
an even golden brown. Drain on kitchen paper.
4. Put the koftas into a dish and pour the
reheated sauce over. Sprinkle with coriander and
almonds and serve.
Ingredients
• 240ml whole milk
• 4-6 green cardamom pods, lightly crushed
• 1 black cardamom pod
• 1 tsp turmeric
• 1 tsp ground cumin
• 500g white fish fillets, rinsed and patted dry
• 1 large potato, cooked and diced
• 1 onion, roughly chopped
• 1 tsp root ginger roughly chopped
• 1 large green chilli
• 2-3 tbsp chopped coriander leaves, more to serve
• 1 tsp roasted cumin seeds, coarsely crushed
• 2 tbsp flaked almonds, toasted, plus more to serve
• 1 tbsp gram flour
• Freshly ground black pepper
• 1 egg, beaten
• Vegetable oil, to deep-fry
Well hello there! I’m back with my monthly column… OK, so firstly a reminder
about me. I’m Zena (Zee for short), I’m 45, a mother and a grandmother.
It’s wedding season!
Whether you’re getting
married or you’re a
guest, there is so much
inspiration out there at the
moment.
Pastel pallets are still very
classic, but they have
evolved over the years. I’ve
put together some mood
boards to give you some
ideas.
Of course there’s always a twist to my
outfit creations and they aren’t always
for everyone!
fabulous, so if they are your thing get over
to the blog where I have
more mood boards with info
about where you can buy
everything from.
If you are looking for a one
I’ve know Helen for
seven years and have
seen her go on to grace
I found these shoes online called
“wedding cake” they are hilariously
I’ve been searching for the best
has led me to find a lack of brands
out there that consider older skin in
Overcome pre-wedding nerves...
BY LISA MARIE SMITH
Panic At The Altar?
Wedding anxiety setting in? Not to
fear I have a few tips to help combat
those nerves and allow you to revel
in your big moment...
Talk to any budding bride or groom
and one word usually resounds:
nerves. Ask them how they’re
feeling and I’ll guarantee, ‘stressed’,
‘excited’ and ‘nervous’ will pour as
much from their verbal response as
it will off their entire aura. Each will
have their individual anxieties, but
research reveals that brides appear
to be taking the brunt, reporting
an upsurge in panic attacks and
breakdowns before – and most
worryingly – on the day itself. So
here’s a few of my top tips!
1. It’s OK to feel overwhelmed...
There’s a huge amount of pressure for everything to go
perfectly, and if you’re anxious you’ll probably feel that pressure
even more intensely.
2. Say a big “yes” to those offers of help...
If you see deadlines looming but freeze up and find yourself
unable to meet them, don’t suffer in silence. Turn to a friend
and say: “Remember when you asked if there was anything you
could do to help? The answer is a thousand times yes.”
3. You really don’t need those Mason jars full of glitter...
I constantly made more work for myself. Buy invitations?
Nope. I decided to make them, despite once glue-gunning
myself to an art workbench at school. It took months of stress
and the end result looked like it was made by a 5-year-old.
Try to prioritise the fine touches and detail; it all adds up and
before you know it you’re facing an impossible to-do list. It’s
perfectly OK to have ordinary place cards or a straightforward
table plan.
You’ll still have an amazing day and won’t have wasted weeks
crying into a pot of calligraphy ink.
16

WEDDING
MAY 2018 MAY | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #67 | #67 WEDDING
4. Take time to reassure your partner...
It’s a good idea to make it clear that
freaking out about the wedding does
not mean you’re not super happy about
getting married. It’s just the same old
crap you’ve had to deal with for years
being magnified by the wedding stress.
You’re both going to feel a bit weird
at times – it’s a big deal – but let your
partner know that it doesn’t mean your
relationship isn’t 100% solid.
5. It’s OK to not enjoy being the centre
of attention...
As an anxious person, being on display
isn’t really part of your MO, but it’s an
integral part of any wedding. Selfconsciousness
might not be something
you consider until quite close to the day
itself, but it’s a good idea to plan for it.
6. It’s fine to be selfish and put yourself
first...
You’re going to feel pretty delicate the
week before the wedding, even if you’ve
been careful and looked after yourself.
7. Don’t be afraid to let things go...
You might feel the only way for things
to go “perfectly” on the wedding day is
if you keep a close eye on all of it, but
that’s actually the best possible way to
utterly exhaust yourself, which can make
anxiety worse.
And after the big day...
You didn’t let anxiety hold you back, you
got married, and you’re awesome. It can
be a scary time for anyone and you did it!
Until next time...
Lisa x
Ken Norton a Unique
World Heavyweight
Champion...
BY RALPH OATES
A series of articles which will feature boxing facts
from both the past to the present...
Ken Norton was without
question a fine fighter
who more than proved his
worth amongst the top elite
heavyweights during the time
period he boxed. Norton hit the
headlines when he became just
the second man in the division
to defeat Muhammad Ali in
the professional rank’s .(Ali’s
first defeat came against Joe
Frazier by way of a 15 round
points defeat on the 8 March
1971 when attempting to regain
his world heavyweight crown).
In the said 12 round points
victory over Ali on the 31 March
1973 Norton won the National
Association Boxing Federation
heavyweight title which Ali
was defending. If that loss
wasn’t bad enough for Ali he
also ended the bout with a
broken jaw. Make no mistake
no-one expected to see Ali lose
against Norton. Muhammad
was expected to win and hence
go on to secure another tilt at
the world heavyweight crown.
However on the night Norton
didn’t share the ring with Ali
just to make up the numbers
he was there to win.
A return with Ali took place on
the 10 September 1973, Norton
was confident of a repeat
victory over the former world
champion. Ali however gained
revenge on this occasion
wining a 12 round points
victory over Norton to regain
his NABF title.
Apart from that famous
victory over Ali Norton also
holds a very unique record
that of being the only man in
boxing to hold a version of
the world heavyweight crown
without ever winning a title
bout. How could that be? You
may very well ask. Truth can
often be stranger than fiction.
On the 26th March 1974
Ken challenged the hard
punching George Foreman
for the undisputed title and
was duly stopped in round
two of a scheduled 15. The
second challenge for world
honours came on the 28
September 1976 when Norton
met defending champion
Muhammad Ali who had by this
time regained the title .Norton
pushed Ali hard but at the end
of the fifteen round contest
was deemed to have come in
second losing the decision on
points.
On the 5 November 1977 Ken
met Jimmy Young in a final
eliminator for the world crown
and won a 15 round points
decision. The then reigning
champion Leon Spinks ignored
the mandated challenger and
defended his title against
Muhammad Ali (whom he
had previously beaten for the
championship). The World
Boxing Council responded by
stripping their version of the
title from Spinks and made
Norton their new champion.
The fates were not on Ken’s
side since he hence lost his
crown in his first defence when
outpointed over 15 rounds by
Larry Holmes on the 9 June
1978. After this defeat Norton’s
career took a downwards
spiral with him winning two,
losing two and drawing one
of his next five bouts. Ken’s
final contest took place on
the 11 may 1981 when he was
stopped in the first session by
Gerry Cooney in a bout which
was never going to go the full
distance of 10 rounds. Norton
who died in 2013 aged 70
years one month and nine days
old compiled a professional
fight record of 50 bouts of
which he won 42, lost seven
and drew one.
NADINE COYLE
Bounce Magazine’s Rachel Ducker speaks to Nadine Coyle about her
time in Girls Aloud, motherhood and her new EP...
As one fifth of chart-mauling, award-winning,
expectation-shattering girl band Girls Aloud,
Nadine Coyle has already played her part in
helping redefine pop.
She returned to the music scene late last
year with a brand new song ‘Go To Work’,
now Nadine announces the release of a new
4 track EP and a UK tour, celebrating strong
women.
She will also be hitting the road this May for a
UK and Ireland tour, performing the greatest
hits of Girls Aloud solo, alongside songs from
her forthcoming new album. Pop fans should
rejoice as this tour is set to be the ultimate
party night out this Spring, seeing Nadine
perform such legendary
hits as ‘Sound Of The
Underground’, ‘Love
Machine’, ‘Biology’,
“Something New’ and
‘The Promise’, alongside
new Nadine stormers
such as ‘Go To Work’
and ‘Girls On Fire’.
If each member of the band – who
sashayed their way through a ten-year, five
album career – had a role, then Nadine’s was
The Voice. Often demoing the songs with
Brian ahead of the other girls during the
band’s tenure, it’s always been any
discerning pop fan’s dream for the pair
to collaborate again on Coyle’s
solo material.
The Derry-born singer opens up to Rachel
Ducker, about motherhood and touches upon
her time in Girls Aloud.
R: Hi Nadine, how are you today?
I’m really good how are you Rachel?
R: I’m great… thanks for your time, I know
I don’t have long so I will start with my
questions! When did you realize you had a
passion for singing?
I was really young. I used to sing ‘Saturday
Night at the Movies’ when I was three years
old, I even used to sing the ad-libs on it. My
mummy and daddy were like “what is she
doing?” A, where did she hear this
song, people kissing on the back
seat of the movies, and B where
did she get all of these ad-libs?
Very early on, I just loved singing
and singing songs that I felt
connected to. My dad was a
singer in his spare time, he did
performances and shows, so he got
me and my younger sister involved.
It’s just something I’ve always done.
R: We saw you emerge onto the music scene
through the TV Show ‘Popstars,’ in 2002,
which is where Girls Aloud was formed. Does
it feel like a lifetime ago now?
It really does? It’s almost like a different world.
MAY 2018 MAY | 2018 ISSUE | #67 ISSUE | #67 NADINE COYLE
R: I mean, how was it to reach Christmas
number one with your very first single the
‘Sound of the Underground’?
It was incredible; I did not expect that at all,
even though I knew the song was amazing.
Yeah it was fine, I wouldn’t say it was
particularly hard or anything of that nature,
but as people, there are times when things go
up and down. There are highs and lows in the
entertainment industry and that’s just how it
is. You know what I mean, you just roll with it?
R: And it still is, I still love it!
I still love it… I know! I think I am going to do
that one on tour, there’s just so many songs
that I want to do on tour, but I can’t do them
all. Yeah, it was a huge surprise to get to
Christmas number one. I remember just going
home and being so exhausted. We had so
much promo once we were in the band, we
were just like “urgh”, and I didn’t know how I
was supposed to feel?
R: What was it like to be in an all girl band?
Well, I have two sisters, there’s us three girls,
and I went to an all girls secondary school
and I have lots of girlfriends, so for me being
around girls was what I was used to. I have
definitely spent a lot of time in my life with
girls, so it wasn’t anything out of the ordinary
for me. I think there was 30 girls in my school
class, so going from 30 girls to 5 was easy!
R: Its no secret that since the band have
gone their separate ways that there has
been lots of things said, not all pleasant,
has is it hard going through all of that in the
spotlight?
No, not at all. I mean, I think its definitely part
and parcel, its just what happens, journalists
write things and people make stuff up. You will
feel like there are times where it’s a personal
attack, but if you can’t handle it, you should
probably pick another job! [laughs]
R: I don’t think I could do it!
R: I guess it’s like a bad day at work then?
If you were working in an office there would
be general office politics. You would then
tell your friends about it when you go home.
Whereas when you do something in this
industry your then the person that people talk
about in their offices! But I am not in offices
having to hear what people have to say so… I
am fine [haha]
R: So you’ve teamed up again with the bands
mastermind, Brian Higgins, what can we look
forward to from here on?
Yes I have! Oh… you can look forward to lots
of new music, which is always great, they
are really supportive. We are doing very soft
releases and building up a portfolio of songs,
and then we can work on the directions,
much like with Girls Aloud, there are so many
different genres of music. It’s so easy to put
music out these days so it’s a great place to
be.
R: Your tour starts in May, what are you most
looking forward to about that?
Yesss! I am most looking forward to having
the set list nailed down, having the show
rehearsed, knowing exactly what we are all
doing and then I think I will be able to get a
good nights sleep! Until then, I don’t think I
will sleep properly until May!
R: You’re also a mum as well now, how does
that work around your career?
She’s so brilliant, she really, really is! She’s just
hilariously funny, and we have a great time
together, so its just a matter of balancing
me being a mother, and then having to go to
work, because sometimes mummy’s have to
work and we can’t all be at home, all of the
time. You just try your best and try to apply
yourself to each thing as best you can and
fingers crossed that it’s all alright? [laughs]
R: In the next year I hope to be a mum, but
as a full time editor I am worried…
Oh wow, are you planning or already
pregnant?
R: Well, I have an upcoming wedding in June,
so we will see what happens after! Do you
have any advice for working mums?
Just don’t beat yourself up to much; you’re
going feel guilty by not spending every single
second with your child, whether awake or
asleep. You have to work, its not like the days
where the man went to work and the woman
stayed at home and shook him a cocktail at
the end of the day – those days are long gone.
I like working, I enjoy working and if you do
too, you should incorporate that into being
part of your life and not worry about it too
much.
R: I think its tough being a woman… even
having to change your surname…
Well you don’t have to [laughs] there’s no law
against that!
R: True, I think I’ll keep my surname for
business purposes only [laughs] I have
noticed your songs are so empowering and
embrace strong women – is that something
you will continue to do?
Yes! Absolutely I am all about that. I am one
of three sisters as I said earlier I have lots
of girlfriends. I am so passionate about it,
you cannot tell me that we are inadequate
or not as good, it’s the complete opposite
and we have some amazing strengths. There
is nothing that we cannot achieve and I will
challenge anyone who dares to disagree!
R: Well said I completely agree. So are you back from
the states full time now? Is it nice to be back?
do for the next series and how we can
make it work.
I love being back in the UK, I really do. I mean, I have
the restaurant in the states and I go back and tour,
which is always great. I used to go back and forth more
before I had Anaíya, but now its just not feasible with
the time zones. I was constantly running her between
here, LA and New York and it was confusing her eating
times and routine. It was better to just try and limit it.
R: I guess some stability it probably quite nice right
now after all that?
Yes! It is! Having Anaíya forced me to be just
comfortable, I had no stability at all since the age of 17,
now I am like, I have a bern I have to have a routine, so
its been very nice.
R: There’s been talks of you starring in the Channel 4
comedy Derry Girls… any truth in those rumours?
Yes! There absolutely is! I have been talking to the
writer so we are just trying to figure out what we can
R: I bet it will be nice to be back in
Ireland?
I love Ireland, it still is and always will
be home. It’s so easy to get there from
London. I am in Ireland regularly; I am
never to far away [laughs]perspective,
it’s given me strength and also with
the physical side of what we do, it’s
helped me.
R: Any plans for another album?
Definitely, I mean this is my 15 th year,
and I hope that I can continue for
another 16 years! That would be great!
R: Well thanks so much for your
time Nadine and best of luck with
everything to come.
Exam Stress
Taking an exam or test, be it at
work, school or university can be
quite daunting.
It’s been few years since my university days,
but I still remember the stress and anxiety I had
before taking my exams. Don’t get me wrong,
a little stress and anxiety before an exam or test
can be a good thing because it can help keep
you focused and motivated to do the work that
needs to be done. But too much can lead to
feeling overwhelmed, panicked and potentially
underachieving in the exam.
So here are a few tips to help you manage any
stress or anxiety you may have relating to any
work, school or university exams or assessments:
BREATHING: A good breathing technique like
7/11 (see my blog post ‘How to Deal with Anxiety’
for further details) is worth its weight in gold
when it comes to helping you relax because it
induces the bodies relaxation response and it’s so
discreet, it can be done almost anywhere.
REGULAR BREAKS: Take regular breaks,
you wont be as efficient if you revise or work for
hours on end.
Generally, studying in roughlyone hour blocks
is suggested to be the most effective way of
working, then take a break.
EXERCISE REGULARLY: Exercising releases
various important hormones, such as serotonin,
dopamine and norepinephrine, all of which
contribute towards helping you stay focused,
keeping your energy levels and mood up, and
keeping your stress levels down.
SLEEP: The benefits of getting a good quality
night’s sleep are numerous, but not getting
enough sleep can have a negative effect on your
memory as well as increase your stress levels, so
try and avoid those ‘all nighters’ and get a good
nights sleep.
REMEMBER: Exam success isn’t just about
being knowledgeable and knowing the right
material; your state of mind also plays a big part.
Having the ability to stay calm, relaxed, confident
and focused can all play a vital role in helping you
achieve your full potential.
Benefits
Stretches and strengthens the thighs, knees,
ankles, hips, groins, hamstrings, and calves;
shoulders, chest, and spine
Stimulates the abdominal organs
Helps relieve stress
Improves digestion
Helps relieve the symptoms of menopause
Relieves backache
Cautions:
Diarrhea, Headache, Low blood pressure
Heart Condition, High blood pressure, Neck
problems.
How to try the pose:
1. Stand in Tadasana. With an exhalation, step
or lightly jump your feet 3 1/2 to 4 feet apart.
Raise your arms parallel to the floor and reach
them actively out to the sides, shoulder blades
wide, palms down.
2. Turn your left foot in slightly to the right and
your right foot out to the right 90 degrees.
Align the right heel with the left heel. Firm
your thighs and turn your right thigh outward,
so that the center of the right knee cap is in
line with the center of the right ankle.
3. Exhale and extend your torso to the right
directly over the plane of the right leg,
bending from the hip joint, not the waist.
Anchor this movement by strengthening the
left leg and pressing the outer heel firmly to
the floor. Rotate the torso to the left, keeping
the two sides equally long. Let the left hip
come slightly forward and lengthen the
tailbone toward the back heel.
4. Rest your right hand on your shin, ankle, or
the floor outside your right foot, whatever is
possible without distorting the sides of the
torso. Stretch your left arm toward the ceiling,
in line with the tops of your shoulders. Keep
your head in a neutral position or turn it to the
left, eyes gazing softly at the left thumb.
5. Stay in this pose for 30 seconds to 1 minute.
Inhale to come up, strongly pressing the
back heel into the floor and reaching the top
arm toward the ceiling. Reverse the feet and
repeat for the same length of time to the left.
Beginner’s Tip:
Brace your back heel or the back of your torso
against a wall if you feel unsteady in the pose.
With thanks to www.yogajournal.com/poses.
Please take care in all poses, if unsure please
attend a class or ask for a private lesson.
Summer
bodies
GET READY FOR SUMMER - BY BEN HUTTON
So the sun has finally come out after a
long, wet and miserable winter and I have
noticed an increasing number of people
out running and cycling.
Evenings are getting lighter, our moods are improving
and we all want to catch a little bit of sun, so now is
the perfect time to get active outdoors!
May is ‘National Walking Month’, and if you live a
relatively sedentary life, walking is the perfect place
to start. You could perhaps walk to work, or if that’s
not an option, you could park a little further away
than normal. You could take the stairs rather than the
escalators, or you could walk your dog a little more.
Studies have proved two things, 1. Exercise is improves
our mood through release of ‘feel good’ endorphins,
and obviously our health for a number of reasons and
2. Controlled sun exposure improves our mood, as
well as our health. So why not combine the two?
Personally I have just signed up to join a Canicross
club, which is a running club for owners and their four
legged friends! I’m using this to kick-start my running
season, as well as meet new people and socialise my
dog a little more.
There are a number of social clubs you could get
involved with over summer, like boot camps, village
cycle clubs and park runs. Park runs are a great way to
get out in a welcoming environment and run or walk
at your own pace with a friendly group of locals!
A little added bonus, is you’ll burn more calories when
it’s hot, but remember to stay hydrated and always
listen to your body, if you feel like it’s too much then
take a rest, it is easy to over work during summer.
Move More. Stay Hydrated. Have Fun.
The Wines
of Romania and
Bulgaria
Both of these countries have been making wine for
millennia. Classed as East European.
BY ‘WINE BUFF’ FRED FISHER
Imports to the UK have varied from high to low,
brought about by the stiff competition from
New World, such as countries like Australia, New
Zealand and Chile, and have suffered as a result.
They are now producing more wine with
affordable prices especially compared with other
European countries like France, Germany and
Spain.
Romania...
One of the oldest wine producing regions with
viticulture dating back more than 6000 years.
Being close to the Black Sea the country has a
suitable climate, geography and soils to produce
good quality wine. Up to the phylloxera crisis in
the 1880’s each region had its own grapes that
provided generic wine. Wine had become the
traditional Romanian beverage. An improvement
in its fortunes came about by introducing French
grape varieties while retaining many of their
indigenous varieties. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Sauvignon Blanc
being the main ones. Currently Romania has
187,000 hectares of vines which ranks it about
sixth in Europe and thirteenth in the world.
Main Regions..
Can be seen as 8 distinct zones...
Transylvania - A high central region producing
46

FOOD & DRINK
MAY 2018 MAY | ISSUE 2018 #67 | ISSUE | FOOD #67 & DRINK
mainly white wines, the most important being
Tirnave, wines similar to Mosel in Germany.
Crisana - To the west and influenced by the
Adriatic producing crisp white wines.
blight in the late 1880’s affected it and led to a lot
of replanting. The French were consulted about
what to replant. It was agreed that several local
varieties such as the red Mavrud, Pamid, Gamza
(Kadarka) and white Miskat (Muscat) be retained.
Silvania - North of Transylvania and moderate
climate.
Moldavia - Cotnari one of the oldest regions.
Famous for sweet wines.
Muntenia - North of Bucharest with the area
called Dealul Mare, this provides good red wines
using French varieties.
Oltenia - West of Bucharest and dating from
Roman times. The Sauvignon Blanc
does well here.
Banat - Near Serbia and the
Danube it has a mixture of local
grapes and imported ones.
Dobrudja - Near the Black Sea
with Murfatler being the most
important part. Many French
varieties making good wine as well
as a supply of table grapes.
Indigenous grapes - Many are still used mainly
Feteasca, Rkatsiteli and Grasa among many
others.
Bulgaria...
Wine has been made in Bulgaria for at least 3000
years. It was probably mostly sweet wine and
sold to the Greeks. Even during the crusades it
was spared because of its wine. The phylloxera
The Gamay Noir and Syrah from France were also
planted. The Bulgarian Wine Institute was formed
in Pleven in 1902. The 20’s and 30’s saw the
growth co-operatives but with Communist rule in
the 60’s and 70’s much export wine was
mass produced creating a plonk regime.
In 1989 with the fall of communism
privatisation ensued leading to better quality
wine production.
Main Regions...
There are 5 viticultural Regions...
The Danubian Plain - Good conditions
for Muscat, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Merlot, Chardonnay, Pamid and the
Gamza.
Black Sea - Riesling, Muscat,
Sauvignon Blanc and Gewurztraminer
are grown here.
Rose Valley - The Sungurlare Valley is famous
for a red Misket grape variety.
Thracian Lowland - A temperate climate and
adequate rainfall produce good red wine from
Mavrud, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Muscat and
Pamid grapes.
Struma River Valley - In the South West. From
the historical region of Macedonia with some
local grapes and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.
Conclusions...
Give them both a try as they historically, have been in the top league of wine producers.
Especially look for some of the local grape varieties such as Gamza, Feteasca, Mavrud and
Rkatsiteli. I have tasted some fine Pinot Noir as well.
A POTTERS PARTY
Bounce Magazine were excited to be invited to one of the All
Inclusive Party Weekends at Potters Resort in Hopton...
On a bright summers
day we were grateful
to be heading towards
the coast of Hopton
near Gt Yarmouth.
modern, spacious and could accommodate up to four people
with a good amount of outside space, perfect for relaxing in
the sun.
All inclusive drinks started from 6pm each evening.
The nice thing about this is was that once you left the
As our Bounce team arrived, there
was a real buzz in the air.
We weren’t really sure what to
expect from an all inclusive drink
weekend, though we were soon to
find out.
bungalow, you didn’t have to worry about taking out your purse
or wallet, everything was covered and with a simple show of
your wristband... you could order any drink you desired.
When we arrived at dinner in the main restaurant there were
already two bottles of wine waiting for us, a sign of things to
come!
We were staying in one of the
resorts bungalows, which were
The three course meal was served extremely quickly and our
waitress, Hannah, was very attentive. With two vegetarians in
our group, there were some great options on the
menu including a ‘Ricotta Tortellini’ and ‘Sweet
Potato Curry’ followed by dessert.
Take That, taking us through the 80s, 90s and
noughties, we simply had to join in and dance, and
that we did until the early hours of the morning.
Our other guests enjoyed Sticky Ribs and a
Carvary, which was self-service.
When dining, you can never get lost as you
have your own dedicated tables. We all know as
creatures of habit it is nice to be in the same spot,
so for us this was a bonus!
Once worn out, on hand to help us sober, up was
a wonderful Chilli, served in the Terrace. Much
needed!
As we arose with cloudy heads, the next day we
wandered over to breakfast and discussed the day
ahead.
The highlight of our visit had to be the Potters
Theatre Company.
The quality of the acts were fabulous, from the
Michael Jackson impersonator to Boy George and
Over Eggs Benedict and a strong coffee, we
decided our next stop was riffle shooting.
Little did the staff member know, one of our
team was a trained shooter, and of course he
shot every bullseye on the target!
The beauty of being on a Resort such as Potters
means that you have the independence to create
your own fun as well as partaking in planned
activities.
So whilst still in full competition mode, we headed
over for a short session of mini golf. I think it
is safe to say we weren’t quite as good at this
activity!
There is never a dull moment at this resort, the
guests are at the heart of it, we loved taking
part in the mid-morning quiz and only got three
questions wrong!
To make up for a heavy night, we hit the Palms
Health & Fitness centre on site for a quick
lunchtime workout. A full fitness suite is available
along with a pool, whirlpool, sauna and steam
room.
After a shower and a short chill out in the
bungalow, I then stopped at the Aphrodite Beauty
Studio for a treat little treat and had a 30 minute
back, shoulder and neck massage.
My therapist Anna was lovely, very friendly and
left me feeling super relaxed.
Before dinner we went for a walk on the beach,
which is situated right on the edge of the resort.
On our second night we booked in to The Black
Rock Grill.
It’s a fixed price menu where you get to cook your
own food on your very own volcanic ‘Hot Rock’.
No oils and fat are used, so it is a really healthy
way to dine, plus for the price, things keep
coming until you say otherwise.
one, but we give a special mention to the attentive,
friendly staff on hand, who helped to make our
experience a special one.
Again, for the veggies, Halloumi was served
in place of meat and for the meat lovers out
there why not try the Exotic Meats including
Kangaroo!
Overall our experience at Potters was a fun
Perfect for catching up with friends, hen/stag
parties or just a break away with the family, here
you will find everything you need in one place.
Our Bounce team give Potters a big thumbs up and
we would love to go on another event again soon!
Dirty
Martini
An all time classic…
The dirty secret behind the Dirty Martini? A
dash of olive brine brings a hint of
umami to the classic Martini.
Method
1. Pour the vodka, dry vermouth and
olive brine into a cocktail shaker with a
handful of ice and shake well.
2. Rub the rim of a martini glass with
the wedge of lemon.
Ingredients
• 70ml/2fl oz vodka or gin
• 1 tbsp dry vermouth
• 2 tbsp olive brine
• 1 wedge of lemon
• 1 green olive
3. Strain the contents of the cocktail
shaker into the glass and add the olive.
Don’t forget...
Have it shaken not stirred, James bond
was right... Stirring creates a cold, taut
surface free from ice shards. Shaking is
supposedly good to add antioxidants.
FRANK TURNER
Bounce Magazine’s Rachel Ducker speaks to singer songwriter,
Frank Turner, about his new album and tour...
A singular artist and songwriter of
considerable talent, Frank Turner is able to sell
out arena tours, Alexandra Palace and four
consecutive nights at the Roundhouse but still
walk down Holloway Road untroubled.
Turner recently announced the Be More Kind
World Tour, which will begin in April, with
its first leg playing to over 200,000 people
across the UK, the USA, Europe, Canada,
Australia and New Zealand, taking them
through to Christmas.
The first batch of
announcements covers
120 dates.
Rachel Ducker catches
up with Frank to find out
more about the singer
songwriter and his
upcoming tour.
R: Hi Frank, how’s it
going?
I’m great thanks!
R: I would love to know a little more about
your background before you got on the
music scene and how you first started
playing music?
Well, I was raised in Hampshire by my folks,
and had a relatively middle class upbringing.
My parents are quite conservative so their
experience of music was generally classical
music and church music, which never did
much for me. I got into music around 10 years
old and I was at a mates house, and I will
confess to the fact we were playing games,
and he had an Iron Maiden poster on his wall,
which I thought was very cool. My friend told
me it was a band and it never really occurred
to me that music could be that cool. So I ran
off and I got a copy of ‘Killers’ by Iron Maiden
on cassette and since that day I have not
looked back! It was a light switch day, do you
know what I mean?
R: Touching on your education,
is it true you went to school with
Prince William at Eaton?
I was there on a scholarship, yes.
I took an exam when I was a kid, I
can’t tell you what the exam was
about, but I did it and passed. I
am grateful for the education that
I received but felt extremely out
of place socially there. It was all a
very long time ago, I am 36 now so
its not something that crosses my
mind all of the time.
R: Your real name is actually Francis, how did
you become Frank?
Somebody at school one day called me
Frank and given the fact the other kids at
school used to beat me up for having a ‘girls
name’, it was kind of an escape from that, so
I went along with it. At the time I was quite
impressed about being referred to as Frank!
R: Does your mum still call you Francis?
Oh she certainly does! Particularly if I have
69

MAY 2018 | ISSUE #67
misbehaved! [laughs]
R: You were in a band previously called
Million Dead, do you miss being a band or
are you happy solo?
I am happy in a band when it’s a band. I was
really proud of the things we did in that band;
the problem was that the wheels fell off it
happened in a pretty undignified way. We
fell out with each other and forgot how to be
friends and at the end, I felt let down by the
other people, as I wanted to do it forever and
ever! In retrospect now, I can accept my role at
the end of the band as much as anyone else’s,
one of the reasons I went solo is because
I didn’t want to have to depend on other
people, which meant I wasn’t vulnerable to
other peoples decisions.
R: I was introduced to your music by my
partner a few years ago and when I first
listened to a few of the tracks the lyrics
really got to me!
Thank you!
R: They make me quite teary, in particularly
‘Tell Tale Signs’ and ‘Plain Sailing Weather’,
where do you draw inspiration for in your
lyrics?
Lyrics just kind of show up in my head, I was
always quite literate. With these songs, I was
trying to write in the most raw and honest
fashion I could and that was helped and
inspired by the fact that the major relationship
in my life at the point had fallen apart, so I
was writing about myself and my own short
comings.
are all almost all written from the point of view
of the victim. It was entirely my fault that the
relationship fell apart and I thought it would
be interesting to try and write that record as
at the time I couldn’t see anyone else who had
done that?
R: Your renowned for your honest, hard
hitting words, when writing how do you hope
people to interpret what you are trying to
put out there?
I think the interpretation is one of the most
interesting parts, but I also think that what
makes it interesting is that its not driven by
me. Whatever other people take away from
it is their affair and I find it interesting, but I
can’t direct that. When people connect with
songs that are that raw and that personal it is
almost a relief, as you put your soul out there.
If somebody else says, “Yeah, I get it man”
that feels pretty good. In essence I feel that
you have to write for yourself, otherwise it
would be dishonest.
R: I hope you don’t mind me saying but your
relation a collection of your greatest hits…
you seem very young to be doing that!
[laughs]
R: Either you’ve had an amazing career and
you have loads of material or you’re older
than you say you are!
[laughs] Well I am 36 years old, I am not a
man that has a stage age, I have known people
over the years who have had stage ages and I
am still laughing about it now, because really
who gives a toss!
R: Sorry to hear you had such a rubbish time
Frank, as we can definitely here that through
the lyrics…
Haha! Actually the one thing about this record
was I was trying to write a break up song from
the point of view of the bad guy. There are
lots of break up records in the world and they
R: Your 8th studio album is to be released
in May ‘Be More Kind’ can you tell us more
about this? Will it be any different from your
past material or something different?
Part of the reason that we did ‘Songbook’
my greatest hits, before Christmas is that I
wanted to draw a bit of a line. Its an attempt
70

FEATURE
MAY 2018 | ISSUE #67
to get out of my comfort zone and
do something I haven’t done before
musically, so I am experimenting with
a lot of new approaches, different
technology, I am thinking a lot more
about soul music and pop music than
I have before. It’s definitely an attempt
to not repeat myself, shall we say? am
still laughing about it now, because
really who gives a toss!
R: You embark on your mammoth
‘Be More Kind Tour’ stopping by us
in Cambridge in April and Norwich
in May what can we expect from the
show?
Participatory rock and roll explosion
shall we say, we are obviously going to
be playing quite a lot of new material.
I have always tried to include old
material in my sets as well; I don’t
want to be one of those bands that
stop playing the old songs.
R: What has been the biggest
moment of your career so far?
The highlight for me is that I have a
career still in my late thirties, when I
was a kid I told everyone I was going
to do this and everybody laughed… so
f*ck them!
R: What’s the secret to your
longevity?
Hahaha! I like to think I have been
true to my artistic instincts and also
blessed with a creative head, I get
bored very easily and I like to be
active, so I find myself in a creative
form of ADHD.
R: Well thanks for your time Frank we
will see you in Norwich!
Well thank you, its been a Pleasure.
Storage
SOLUTIONS
I don’t know about you, but I
have too much stuff.
BY RUBY REED
Work related,
relationship related
or whatever else. A
recovery session is
what we are after.
Reasons ranging from ‘I’m sure
that will come in handy one
day’ to ‘That could definitely
come back in style...’
I’m not exactly one to have a
monthly clear out. But I moved
to a new house last month
and it seemed like the perfect
opportunity to access the
situation!
After deciding what was being left behind and what
was coming on the new adventure- it was time to think
of some savvy storage techniques.
Shoe Bins...
Don’t panic, this has nothing to do with throwing away
shoes- PHEW. No, quite the opposite.
This is just your very own treasure chest of shoes.
Shoe racks have always been a classic option, but a
shoe bin means they don’t have to be on display, for
example if you didn’t want shoes as ornaments in your
hallway.
Replace the rack with a stylish chest. You’ll also find
you can fit a lot more pairs in. Obviously the size of the
chest is up to you.
MAY 2018 MAY | 2018 ISSUE | ISSUE #67 | #67 LIFESTYLE
Hidden Hooks...
For me, this has become
a little bit of an obsession.
However, you don’t have to
go quite as far as a hook on
the back of each door.
Self-adhesive hooks are
very handy to place on
the inside of wardrobe
doors, airing cupboards,
cupboards under the stairs
or kitchen cupboards.
Whether your hanging up
another jacket or a tea
towel the extra place is
helpful. The little hooks cost
just a few pounds.
Under the Bed...
This doesn’t mean just shove it under the
bed… out of sight out of mind? Nope. A
step up from this is what I like to call my
under bed filing system.
I have some large plastic storage boxesnot
at all expensive, that help me out when
it comes to seasonal rotation of clothes.
For example, from September last year to
now, I didn’t have much use for my summer
dress collection.
So instead of leaving them hung up in my
wardrobe, taking up space, they have been
safely rolled up and stored under the beds
in the boxes. Ready for me to pull out any
day now and replace them with my winter
coats- yay!
I always have found the minimalist trend a
hard one to stick too, but clever storage is
a step in the right direction!
MAY 2018 MAY | ISSUE 2018 | #67 ISSUE | #67 HISTORY
The First Pedestrianised
Shopping Street
The first shopping street
to be pedestrianised in
the UK took place on 17
July 1967.
Norwich was chosen
because of the ‘Traffic in
Towns’ report, which had
been produced by Sir Colin
Buchanan for the Ministry of
Transport in 1963. Originally
three cities were looked at
but Norwich came out on
top by remaining a historical
area with a reduced access
for cars.
To understand how and why
London Street was chosen
we have to go back to 1964
when the Street closed for
six weeks because of a sewer
collapse. A majority of shop
owners were concerned
that their businesses would
suffer, but in fact it had the
opposite and sales were up.
A year later business owners
voted 2:1 in favour of parts
of the street being closed
between 9am to 6pm. During
the 1700s when the street
was known as Cockey Lane
problems with pedestrians
was a daily problem with my
injuries caused by people
and horses. The Watch
Committee stated that the
good people of Norwich
would not accept an area
where vehicles would not be
permitted.
After two members of the
Traffic and Town Planning
Committee visited four
European Cities a report
called ‘Foot Streets in Four
Cities’ was produced and
stated that there should be a
three-month period to make
the area vehicle free, but
there were many objections
but it did not stop the trial
period taking place and the
Lord Mayor tied a white
ribbon at the south end of
the street to state that no
further vehicles could gain
entrance and the start of the
pedestrian area.
All complaints soon
disappeared as people were
soon seen to be enjoying
sitting outside cafés drinking
hot drinks on a street that
once thundered with the
sound of traffic.
Other routes had to be taken
for drivers and nearby Lower
Goat Lane and Dove Street
did report that there was
far more traffic than before
and in June 1968 Lower Goat
Lane joined London Street
in being Pedestrianised and
Dover Street became opened
at certain times.
Parliamentary Secretary at
the Ministry of Housing Lord
Kennet hailed the scheme
a success and before the
end of 1967 Perth, Australia
adopted the London
Street idea, which became
permanent in 1968.
The first three years of the
scheme showed that there
had been an increase of
45% of pedestrians visiting
and it paved the way for
many streets in the UK to
adopt the scheme and it was
featured in the 1968 Rank
film ‘Look at Life’.
Since 1969 and continuing
today, Central Area Traffic
Plan have been working to
remove traffic from all of the
City of Norwich.
Blink XT Camera
BY LUCY JONES
Going on a summer
holiday, but worried
about leaving your home
unprotected, well I have
the perfect solution...
Blink’s not new, I tested their indoor security
camera last year. What is new is the Blink XT, an
indoor/outdoor IP65 rated version of their popular
wire-free camera.
Great for inside or outdoors, night or day, Blink XT
is their latest wire-free security camera and can be
intergrated with other systems.
Blink XT is a Blink Clone. Well, except for this...FHD
video! That’s right, where Blink original records in
720p, Blink XT records in
1080p. Like the original
camera, Blink XT uses
a static image position
which it monitors using
a 110-degree field of
view.
What makes Blink special is its ability to run
on a battery for up to two years. In the camera
industry, that’s an amazing feat.
If you own a current Blink system, you will be
happy to know that Blink XT is compatible with
your current Sync module.
From a home security perspective, this crosscompatibility
is important as one Sync can
support ten cameras, including a mix of XTs and
the original version. If you own a current Blink
80

FOOD & DRINK
MAY 2018 | ISSUE #67
system, you’ll be unhappy to know that there is a
new Sync Module on the way and it’s way better.
SO, WHAT DID I THINK...
Whilst away on a recent trip out of the UK, I
armed my cameras around the house.
I was so impressed with the quality of image and
the fact you can also hear sound.
In fact, the highlight of my time away was
listening to my mother chat with my cats, she
didn’t realise they could pick up the sound!
I felt safe to leave my home in the knowledge I
could check in at any point.
A big thumbs up to Blink’s new camera on the
block.
May QUEEN
This month, I am dedicating my column to my late Nana,
as when she was young, she was the May Queen. …
She loved reading my articles, she was my
Queen and my best friend and she always
will be! She made me feel like a Queen, so
to all of my readers make sure you always
be your own Queen! Treat yourself.
Forget April showers, its May…
What’s more perfect than
Dior’s 2018 summer range
with their blue eye shadow
pallet for those cooler
rainy days and their burnt
oranges/bronze eye shadow
pallets for if you’re soaking up
the sun.
A great compliment to the ‘golden look’
is a nice glossy lip. I love Chanel’s Rouge
Coco Gloss, with its moisturizing and nonsticky
texture; it melts into your lips. Try
‘726 Icing’ for a clear gloss with a hint of
pink. Beautiful! You could also pair Clarins
Lip Oil in ‘Candy’. If you suffer from those
dreaded dark circles under your eyes
try ‘Illamasquas’ a brand new skin base
concealer pen. Apply straight from the pen,
its metal tip has a cooling effect, which
reduces any puffiness.
As a May queen you should always have
the best products and of course be
surrounded by flowers. My Nana
always had flowers all over her
house, very apt for a May Queen.
Combining the two and adding
a touch of vintage, Rosina’s
Lotions and Potions Glorious
Rose Cleansing Milk is an all time
favourite of mine. Not only can you
smell the fresh real roses, it contains
Aloe Vera and Sunflower Oil.
celebrities, praised by experts and, available
at SK.
The world acclaimed CACI non-surgical facelift
system delivers visible and corrective results
without the need for surgery or invasive
procedures. The dramatic results achieved
using these exclusive technologies has created
a huge demand for CACI treatments. SK
uses the CACI Ultimate system, the very first
treatment system to combine; Microcurrent,
Facial Toning, Crystal Free Orbital
Microdermabrasion and, LED
Light Therapy Photo Stimulation.
Facial and now retails the Hydro
Mask. Clients can use this up to
two times at home, whilst storing
it in the fridge in-between uses.
Hydratone combines active
microcurrent rollers with a
unique, electrically conductive silicon gel mask,
infused with powerful hydrating properties
such as collagen, hyaluronic acid and rose
water. The rollers gently massage the face
causing the mask to become electrically
charged so that the whole face is bathed with
rejuvenating energy.The energy delivered
by the rollers recharges and replenishes the
bio-electrical energy within the facial muscles,
restoring tone and firmness. The energy
generated also drives the hydrating actives
contained within the gel mask, deep into
the skin tissue. The gel mask has a dramatic
softening action, which helps to plump out and
smooth deep lines and wrinkles. Perfect for
brides to be.
For those looking for a body treatment, then
the Leg and Bum Lift is exceptional. This is a
targeted body treatment which firms and tones
the buttock and thigh area, helping to sculpt
and contour. A visible firmer and more defined
appearance is apparent immediately after the
treatment. Perfect for a special occasion or
holiday.
Want to target a specific area such as
the jaw and jowl? The CACI Jowl Lift
has been developed to specifically
target muscle laxity around the
jawline which can cause drooping
jowls and loose skin. This treatment is
specially designed to lift and firm the
muscles and refine facial contours to
give a firmer, more toned appearance.
The list is extensive, with most concerns
catered for such as CACI Eye Revive, CACI
Wrinkle Revolution, CACI Blemish Fix
Treatment, CACI Lip Treatment, CACI Acne
Treatment, CACI Scarring/Stretch Marks and
targeted body treatments such as stomach,
bust and hands.
Psoriasis
One of the most popular questions we’re asked is
‘how to I get rid of my Psoriasis?’
Psoriasis is a skin condition marked by red, itchy,
scaly patches. It’s technically the over duplication
of cells. However it can be so much more to many
people and can affect their self confidence.
Unfortunately there is no miracle cure but there
are lots of natural ways that can help you manage
the condition and significantly reduce the
appearance of Psoriasis, hopefully to a point where
you don’t even notice it.
Types of Psoriasis...
There are many different types of Psoriasis
including Guttate, Inverse, Pustular, Erythrodermic,
Psoriatic arthritis and Plaque Psoriasis which is
the most common. It usually appears as red or
pink plaques of raised, thick, scaly skin. However
it can also appear as small flat bumps. It doesn’t
sound pleasant I know and can be painful and
uncomfortable in many cases.
Most commonly affecting the skin on the elbows,
knees, and scalp, although it can appear anywhere
on the body. I’ve often had small patches on my
eyebrows as it tends to appear in areas with less
flesh.
Do you have Psoriasis?...
The obvious choice when you find unusual
patches on your skin is to visit the doctors and
we absolutely advise you to get a professional
diagnosis. However don’t feel that a prescription
is your only option as the creams offered can
be effective for a short time but are often filled
with steroids which will actually thin the skin,
HAIR & BEAUTY
MAY 2018 | ISSUE #67
potentially causing more problems. There are in fact many
natural products and ingredients that can help just as well
and often, dare I say it, better!
Things to consider...
There are lots of ways you can improve your skin and it’s
good start with the basics. We often overlook the products
we wash with daily; shower gel, bubble bath, shampoo,
hand wash. All of which may contain SLS (Sodium Laureth
Sulfate) which is a foaming agent often found in cleaning
products and detergents but frequently found in our
cleansing toiletries in quite large quantities.
This chemical is known for drying out the skin and can
irritate Psoriasis. Try to choose a natural option - I opt for
the Childs Farm range - don’t be fooled that it’s just for kids
- us adults can use it too and it’s super mild and nourishing
for your skin.
Moisturising your skin is very important when you have
Psoriasis creams are great but do consider mild pure oils
such as Argan Oil. It’s repairing benefits are unrivaled,
packed full of nutrients including Omegas 3,6 and 9, it
actually has the highest content of Vitamin E for an oil in
the known world.
It works by balancing out the skin and encouraging it to
repair itself which can reduces the over duplication of cells,
caused by Psoriasis, in many cases.
How I manage my Psoriasis?...
I know that my body gets used to just
one set of products so I do mix it up. I use
the Childs Farm hair and body wash or an
avocado hard soap. Avocado is amazing for
Psoriasis, even eating it will help heal your
body from the inside. I regularly moisturise
with Argan Oil too - it’s perfect for all areas
of my body including my scalp.
Stress can be a big factor in the severity of
a Psoriasis flare up so I try to ensure I take
lots of breaks to recharge my batteries.
When I’m run down by body shows me.
I know my Psoriasis will never be totally
gone but by making different choices
it’s now hardly noticeable on my skin. It’s
important to remember the products that
work for me may not be right for you but
the greatest piece of advice I could give is
to go natural and chemical free with your
skincare choices. It’s the best thing I ever
did.
All these products can be found at Funky
Skincare. Please do feel free to contact me
if you would like one-to-one advice. I’m
happy to share my experiences.
INSPIRING
GARDENS
With warmer weather finally here,
we can start contemplating long
lazy summer days spent outside.
Gardens bursting back into life after a dull winter can
really lift our spirits and with that in mind, a little bit
of effort now, or even a complete garden overhaul
will pay dividends right through the coming months.
102

MAY 2018 | ISSUE #67
2. At this stage it’s useful to decide on the
style that you want your garden to reflect;
whether rustic or modern for example, and
work everything around achieving your
finished ‘look’ from planting decisions to
materials.
3. Deal with the hard landscaping elements
first. Deciding on a materials palette is helpful
so that the garden ends up looking unified,
especially if you are working in stages.
4. Choose planting that ties in with your
chosen style and draw out planting plans.
Many garden designers are happy to jump in
at this stage to recommend planting if you
are unsure. Try to avoid going to the garden
centre with nothing in mind and just buying
whatever is in flower. Clients often come
unstuck because they don’t look at fullygrown
sizes.
Award winning landscaping expert,
Mark Richardson of Stewart Landscape
Construction, advises as much time spent
planning as possible. He says, “really
understanding what you want and where
are the key components to a successful
redesign. Any changes during construction
can be disproportionately costly and so for
larger projects, I always recommend using
a professional garden designer as well as a
proper landscaper.”
MARK HAS LISTED HIS TOP TIPS FOR
CREATING THE PERFECT GARDEN:
1. First, it is important to understand your
outside space holistically. For a complete
update, you will need a garden survey plan
so that the whole garden is visible. Work out
where the sunny spots are.
Mark’s passion for delivering beautiful gardens
can be seen in his projects all over East Anglia
as well as in his high-end portfolio of work
in London. This year, Mark’s company will
be putting in their fourth garden at the RHS
Chelsea Flower Show, with a Trailfinderssponsored
design from Jonathan Snow
showcasing a South African winelands
inspired garden that looks set to wow show
visitors with it’s evocative design on Main
Avenue. Having spent days ‘mocking-up’
the mountain boulders in the stoneyard
in Glasgow – a large scale version of rock
Jenga, to finding ways of singeing plants
to recreate the post-bush fired indigenous
fynbos landscape, Mark is looking forward to
the complex business of installing the show
garden in a few short days.
Fingers crossed for that elusive ‘Main Avenue’
Chelsea Gold medal! Follow their progress on
SUMMER IS ON IT’S WAY
BY KATE LINES
Kates Top Tip for May: Plant out
cannas and dahlias
As bulbs fade and herbaceous
borders grow in leaps and bounds,
it is now clear that summer is
approaching.
Sowing and planting out bedding can begin,
depending on regional weather variations, and you
can take softwood cuttings.
It’s also time to get back into the lawn mowing
regime, as the lawn will be loving the warmer
temperatures this month brings.
Flowers
Tubs can be planted up with
summer bedding in milder areas.
In colder areas further north or at
high altitudes, it is advised to wait until
early June, or until all risk of frost has passed.
Divide clumps of herbaceous perennials that you
want to propagate.
Bamboos and clumps of bulbs or rhizomes can be
divided in the same way. Cutting back clumps of
spring-flowering perennials such as Pulmonaria and
Doronicum can encourage a fresh flush of foliage.
Top jobs this month:
1. Watch out for late frosts. Protect tender plants
2. Earth up potatoes, and promptly plant any still
remaining
5. Regularly hoe off weeds
6. Open greenhouse vents and doors on warm
days
7. Mow lawns weekly
8. Check for nesting birds before clipping hedges
3. Plant out summer bedding at the end of the
month (except in cold areas)
9. Lift and divide overcrowded clumps of daffodils
and other spring-flowering bulbs
4. Collect rainwater and investigate ways to
recycle water for irrigation
10. Watch out for viburnum beetle and lily beetle
grubs
kitchen. A scuff here and a scratch there
are barely noticeable at first.
AT THE HEART
OF THE HOME...
The kitchen is the heart of
many homes.
What’s more, it’s usually at the centre of
family gatherings and social occasions.
Over time though, dents accompany
scratches, doors don’t fit like they used
to, and the worktops have seen better
days.
And one evening, while taking stock
of your once lovely kitchen, you notice
the tiles. Oh dear. Did you really choose
those?
As the song said, ‘you’ll always find me
in the kitchen at parties’…! It’s true isn’t
it?
Many a relationship has started over a
glass of something in a friend’s kitchen!
One of the side effects of this volume of
traffic is the sheer wear and tear on your
108

HOME & GARDEN
MAY 2018 | ISSUE #67
It’s all a bit lost in the mists of time, but
surely it wasn’t that long ago?
And let’s not even talk about the
grouting or the impossible to remove
marks on the hob.
Throw in customisable LED lighting
options, economical appliances that
run at a whisper and it really does feel
like the 21st century has arrived. And all
this while saving space for the easy to
access, integrated wine rack!
Moving on then, time really does fly
doesn’t it? And surely it makes sense
that this all-important domestic
rendezvous point gets an occasional
facelift or refit?
It isn’t even about new for the sake
of vanity, or even keeping up with the
Jones’ (although their kitchen is just too
fabulous, darling!).
The latest kitchen designs afford the
use of just about every available inch of
space, with innovative storage features.
A bit like Heineken, refreshing the parts
older kitchens can’t reach!
From granite to quartz to new
composite materials, today’s kitchen are
streets ahead of designs even just a few
years old.
Breakfast bars are now islands, with
integrated appliances such as hobs
with their statement extractor fans
suspended above.
The ever-present family kettle is
becoming redundant with the popularity
of Boiling Water Taps, and all this with
electrical outlets and charging points
aplenty to gadgets, phones and other
essentials.
CROSSFIT GAMES
BY ROSS “ACTION MAN” WISHART
In last September’s edition of Bounce
I wrote about my first foray into
the global fitness phenomenon that
is CrossFit, I even touched on the
search for the fittest athlete on earth
in CrossFit’s annual championship,
Now I was and still am a relative novice to
the sport and therefore conceded that I
probably wouldn’t be in the running for the
$250,000 top prize... this year.
However I was encouraged by my gym
(aka ‘box’ in CrossFit terminology) gang to
participate under the guise of “it’ll be fun”
but despite the fact I knew I would struggle
with certain elements I was keen to use this as
a benchmark to kick-on my CrossFit journey.
The competition starts with ‘The Open’ which
is available to all entrants at all levels and
comprises of 5 workouts specifically designed
for the event with their details a closely
guarded secret.
One workout is released every Thursday night
for 5 weeks, you then have until the following
Monday night to complete it at a CrossFit
affiliated Box under the trained eye of a
CrossFit affiliated coach and then submit your
score online. It all sounds quite serious but we
are talking about the world championship of
a highly competitive, professional, sport and
you can’t help but get caught up in the hype
leading up to the workout reveals.
SPORT
For those still contemplating CrossFit then
fret not, your local box is not filled with
reebok clad, dumbbell hurling hooligans, quite
the opposite in fact. A CrossFit workout has a
number of different scaled difficulty levels to
ensure that you get the best workout for your
ability until the time you are ready for the top
end RX workout.
The 2018 CrossFit Games Open got underway
with over 400,000 competitors and I was
able to give a good account of myself for the
first 2 workouts 18.1 & 18.2, the follow week
however was a different kettle of fish. A work
conference saw me in Sri Lanka the following
week, undeterred I found the nearest CrossFit
gym, 90% humidity made the going tough but
thanks to the support of CrossFit Colombo I
happily ticked 18.3 off the list.
The final two workouts saw the difficulty
level rise and my capabilities fail with some
technical movements but this has only served
to spur me on to bigger and better things
in 2019 as I am to better my 160,534th final
position, which sadly isn’t enough to see me
qualify for the Europe regional event in Berlin,
with the top competitors there going forward
to the final in Las Vegas. The Open has also
helped me integrate further into my box and
the wider CrossFit community, both of which I
feel immensely proud to be a part of.
Action Man says: For the first time I
can proudly say that I am a crossfitter!
You can too! Join me a Grange Fitness
& Performance Centre in Martlesham
or visit www.crossfit.com to find you
nearest box.
FAULKNER
THE DIRE STRAIGHTS EXPERIENCE
The Dire Straits Experience,
the acclaimed live show from
former Dire Straits touring
member Chris White, have
announced a six-date UK tour
spanning May and June 2018.
Over 25 years have passed since
Dire Straits disbanded, leaving
a catalogue of some of the
finest compositions and musical
performances that the heyday of
rock ever produced. If anything,
their reputation has only grown
with time. Record sales of more
than 125 million albums continue
to increase as new young fans
discover the music and join
the band’s massive worldwide
following. A trend that is echoed
in their 2018 inauguration into
the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame.
It was against the backdrop of
a two-decade break - and an
increasing demand to hear one
of the most dramatic songbooks
in rock history played live again
– that former members of Dire
Straits, Alan Clark, Chris White
and Phil Palmer formed The
Straits for a charity show at The
Royal Albert Hall in 2011. With
the prolific Knopfler enjoying an
incredibly successful solo career,
Alan Clark called upon the
singer songwriter, Terence Reis
to front the band in his absence.
By the time The Straits ended,
three and a half years later, the
band had played more than 150
shows in 25 countries around
the world.
Chris White said; “I have been
truly amazed and, frankly,
humbled by the response we
have had from the fans on
hearing these songs again. In
Terence Reis, I think we may
have found the only person on
the planet that is able to play
and sing like Mark, but maintain
his own integrity and identity.
I think this is the very essence
of why the fans have been
so accepting of what we do.
They believe in Terence as his
own man. They know he is not
trying to be Mark. Because of
his respect for Mark, Terence is
able to perform these songs in
a very honest way that allows
his energy and talent to come
through. This is exactly what
allows the performances to
feel alive and fresh. Not slavish
copies of a bygone time.
Without Terence, this would
simply not work.”
And so it is that these songs, in
all their ambition, grandeur and
aching beauty, are once again
presented live... for the fans that
that have kept them alive.
IN THE SPOTLIGHT...
JAMIE ARCHER
MUSIC
Jamie Archer is a 19 year old Funk-Rock
solo artist from Halesworth, Suffolk.
Currently studying at the University of
Lincoln he is in his first year of Media
Production. Jamie grew up in a household
where music was around every corner,
whether it be his brothers playing their
guitars or his dad reminiscing in the
lounge as he blared out Chic; it was safe to
say music would undoubtedly become a
part of his everyday life. Up until just over
a year ago Jamie was very much a listener
only, however having always wanted to
produce something of his own, he did just
that.
Jamie began working on music, with
influences from his upbringing becoming
the forefront for establishing a genre. With
a mix of his dad’s love of 80’s disco music
and family’s shared love of rock, emerged
a funky but also rocky vibe. Leading up
to summer 2017 he continued producing
such songs and began uploading them
to BBC Introducing. BBC Radio Suffolk
listened to his tracks and really liked them,
following which they chose to broadcast
them through the summer as part of the
Introducing programme and receiving lots
of positive feedback from listeners.
Life was going great but then it all
came crashing down. Towards the end
of the summer Jamie’s mum tragically
passed way and his world was torn
apart. Suddenly everything about his life
changed and music went out the window.
Jamie expresses that during his grieving,
he began to find that writing lyrics and
producing music about his deepest
thoughts and feelings served as a coping
mechanism. Furthermore in time his love
for music was reborn and soon began
making more and more music, leading to
being featured on Radio Suffolk again.
A few months ago he had the realisation to
make an album, to produce a soundtrack
to his heartache, a testament to his grief.
He decided early on the album would be
entitled ‘Silently Loud’ due to the fact these
songs were a way of taking his deepest
thoughts that had been silent and loudly
evoking them through music. Recently he
has released a single off the upcoming
album, which has been broadcast on
university radio and subsequently the
appreciation for which has led to him to
becoming the University of Lincoln Artist of
the Week. Which brings us to the present
day.
Jamie’s debut album ‘Silently Loud’ is now
out across all music platforms including
Spotify and iTunes.
Archie’s
Adventures
SAFETY IN THE GARDEN...
I love a good scout around the
garden, especially when it’s warm.
Last year, I had a rather unpleasant experience
with some uninvited friends who made their
home on me… bloomin’ cheek!
So in light of that, here is my handy doggy guide
to staying safe in the garden.
TICKS AND FLEAS...
The warm weather brings out undesirable pests
such as fleas, ticks and mites, I know I have had
them!
Make sure your four legged friend is treated
monthly for fleas and ticks. If you find one use
the hook method or seek vet advice.
DRINK...
Make sure that your dog has a fresh bowl of
water always available to them. They will drink
more in the hot weather so you will need to
check and re-fill it on a regular basis.
SUNBURN & PAW BURN...
Dogs love to sit in the sun but don’t let them
bake themselves. If necessary, restrict access
to directly sunny areas and provide plenty of
accessible shady places for them to relax.
Pets with light or white coats or exposed skin
can get sun burnt. Use a sun block on exposed
areas and on the tips of ears, forehead and nose
or any area you feel could burn. Don’t walk your
dog on hot surfaces such as pavements, tarmac,
parking lots etc. as this can burn their pads. If it is
too hot for the back of your hand, it is too hot for
your dog’s paws.
Most importantly have fun in the sun, enjoy it
while it lasts!
Follow me on Insta @official_archies_
adventures. You can also keep up to date with
my antics on Twitter @bouncearchie.
SHADE...
Always make sure that your dog has access to a
shady area, whether it is indoors or out. You can
be prosecuted for cruelty to animals if you leave
your dog without adequate shade and adequate
water.
