1 2 3 John Myatt Castle Galleries You have created genuine copies of some of the greatest artworks in history - what do you think makes a great still life? If you start with Cezanne there’s a whole way of thinking about still life painting which is completely different to how they would have thought about it 100 years earlier, when they would have been hanging up peacocks and dead hares. At one point artists were moving toward photographic realism, but when the photograph came along it changed the whole way of looking at objects. So by the turn of the 20th century the still life became a pretext. If you think of Picasso and Braque, the Cubists, their still lifes are titled ‘Jug and Guitar’ but are very hard to read. Artists have projected their own needs onto the still life format for 100 years. It has survived right into that format to today. Now it’s a way of showing how good you are with the basic challenges of painting, which are composition, colour balance and drawing. That avenue was opened up particularly by Picasso and Matisse. Which painters of still life do you particularly admire? Ben Nicholson. The way an artist in the post-war period used a very small repertoire of jugs and goblets for gigantic abstract paintings and very small ones. You can decipher a Nicolson painting by looking at the handles and the spouts, they’re a kind of abstract music of colour and form and texture, I like him a lot. What is the appeal of painting still lifes rather than other genres? Logistics. Still life you can set up in the studio, it doesn’t matter if it’s raining, you are in charge of the set up and the lighting. Cezanne and Monet painted flowers when it was too wet to go out - and of course flower paintings are very commercial. I’ve just been looking at Van Gogh’s painting of his old boots. He showed still life could serve an expressionist purpose, it could channel emotion, which no one had showed before. How do you get into the head of a particular artist? I have some genuine fakes of Cezanne still life paintings in the studio at the moment, they’re going onto a film set. You look at line, colour, form, texture, composition and so forth. Do you ever add your own little tweaks or touches? Always! Unless a customer comes along and says can you do a ‘copy’. I always ask for a massive amount of money and hope they’ll say no. For my own work if I’m doing, say, Renoir, Monet, or Dufy, I start off with an idea they may have had, and then I’ll be wandering around and see something interesting and I’ll put it in my painting.
