SH Restoration & New Build Supplement “We are here to listen” Nicolas Tye Nicolas Tye Architects The opportunity to design their own home is often a dreamed-of opportunity for our clients. So from the outset this needs to be treated with enormous respect, as the clients’ build up to this moment has not just been weeks or months of thought, but typically years or decades. We ask our clients to provide us with three main elements of briefing, in a detailed document that should include storage requirements and everything you can possible think of. The second item is simply discussion on all aspects of the project from the site to family life and future planning etc. The third element is three sets of images, including aspirational inside images, landscape and external house pictures, with the latter being the most difficult to finalise for clients typically. We then review budget and the site and its surrounding context, pull together some design options and ideas in principle, and then develop the more detailed CAD drawings and, as required, 3D visuals. Having the right data and team is critical to the robustness of the project. Typically, we ask for an independent digital levels survey of the site (and surroundings as necessary) to show us the levels of the site, positions of trees, drains and any built objects and this would include any relevant elevations and sections. Sometimes we have to call in planning consultants who specialise in local and national planning policies, highways engineers if access is awkward, arboricultural (trees) in case they are protected or roots could be damaged, drainage and - most importantly of all - quantity surveyors. The benefit of the quantity surveyor is to provide what we call ‘cost comfort’ near the beginning of the project. This means that prior to going to planning or anywhere near tender, you have a strong indication on cost which can inform decisions on size, scale and specification to tune the project to budgetary needs. The architect’s role is not just designing the building, it’s the ‘holistic approach’ including the internals, the landscape, the furniture, sometimes even as far as the crockery and cutlery to compliment the house.
