A Call To Shape A
Generation,
Everywhere we go,
People have to know
Who we are.
We are connected to our stories.
Who we are?
Entitled to our glory.
Who we are?
We chart our own path, our own opportunities,
From a world connected with possibilities.
To make difference our greatest victory
We are changed, we are charged.
Once felt it in our words,
But now- It's In Our Ways
Sunken dreams now crawl out from the gallows
Singing " Not All Is Lost
Now gather all your heroes,
Follow with purpose.
A new road once divided has converged,
Leading a single cause
One to shape what we leave behind.
Our Background
The evolution of a countries labour market has remained the biggest
driving force to growing a sustainable economy and social development.
This includes the constant upscaling of skills and recycling knowledge for
innovative and creative mindsets. All these are important ingredients for a
country to thrive in the global economy.
60% of Africa's population is home to youth under the age of 25 years.
That is a massive indicator for economic growth, or is it?
10
Proof Copy: Not optimized for high quality printing or digital distribution
For example, South Africa's constantly developing economy presents
much opportunity for it's growing youth population in terms of labour
force however it bears a massive skills shortage due to a mismatch of
qualification and field of study. With the growing rate of technology
disruptions, taking up 5.1 million of existing work between 2015-2020 in
15 major & emerging economies according to the WEF.: The Future of
Jobs. This is a major cry for a skills upgrade within organizations and
learning institutions curricula. Which is why preparing our youth by
equipping them with a theory guided project & problem-based learning is
essential, as it provides employment readiness due to it's practical
application of the learnt curriculum & soft skills training leaving students
affective competencies & standard proficiencies. This means employers
require employees who can collaborate, communicate and influence as
modern workplace environments reflect this through open-plan
workspaces designed for increased interaction.
It is due to these identified needs we have collaborated with existing
NGO's to adopt the Skill Exchange Makerspace model, corporate
companies to help onboard our students after completion and
universities to help with the knowledge transfer by using the space for
their students practical application of their field of study. This will creates
consistently high quality learning, accessibility to students, international
recognition and relevancy to the needs of industry. By introducing new
approaches such work integrated learning using project & problem-based
learning & assessment, opening room for Recognition of Prior Learning,
Skill Exchange Makerspace will create personalized career pathways for
people who seek autonomy, authenticity, craftsmanship & meaningful
assessment.
Why Skill Exchange?
Skill Exchange recognizes that for Africa, as a continent to achieve a
reduction in poverty, more people need to advanced themselves through
proactive learning. And having access to both a theory guided projects;
problem-based learning environments and soft skills training to develop
skills that will lead to work readiness not only for the present work
needs, but for the future. This includes underprivileged groups, which are
traditionally under-represented in skills training which is why our
establishments are in townships and rural areas.
Skill Exchange Makerspace’s are next-generation workshops equipped
with technology infrastructure designed to accelerate professional
development, performance & creativity for high school and university
graduates. It provides workplace practices aligned to theoretical
knowledge (Work Integrated Learning); financial and emotional
independence; a safe and collaborative environment to express ideas;
tangible support for growth; and an alignment of activities with people on
the same path to compliment skill-set. Learners participate in workintegrated
cross-disciplinary projects arranged to develop real world
solutions to socio-economic issues through project-based learning.
Future Skills Profile
14
Proof Copy: Not optimized for high quality printing or digital distribution
We've had first hand experience on
the effects of technology
disruptions in a global world both
positive and negative. Which is why
we understand the importance of
technology education.
Education
We purposely apply technology
with the predisposed technical
skills and gained knowledge; that
suit the varying curriculum needs
to ease provisions of our
experiential learning approach.
Life Skills
We have a core believe that entrepreneurship skills can help our
students with dealing with the uncertainties of this ever changing world.
We institutionalize entrepreneurship not only for individuals who will
use the vocation, but as a tool to prime our students for agile & creative
thinking, problem solving, identifying opportunities & knowing how to
carry oneself, as every entrepreneur knows how their behavior could
lead them to either their next breakthrough or demise.
Career Guidance
Our career guidance methods uses
the students internal compass of
how they envision their future
through guiding their discovery
process using projects. This helps
students identify and better
understand the different roles they
may take up in future; how to
master and work towards that
future. Thus broadening the
opportunity scale by creating fluid
careerist that leverage on their
gained collective of experiences,
roles and expertise through our
project based coursework.
Mobilizing Partners
By integrating our matching expertise, diverse experiences;
resources and networks-to bring new ways to performing specific
actions- we reinvent the wheel of how we face societal and economic
challenges to create sustainable value chains. We hope to CO-
CURATE socio-economic innovations at the Bottom of the Pyramid by
collaboratively designing and managing our work with NGO’s,
universities, socially conscious companies, provincial and local
institutions to co-make impact.
Our partner organizations share the same values which underpin our
call of shaping Africa's biggest advantage for socio-economic
development through inclusive value chains. Our model will be
replicated for our scale up Makerspace's
Designs reflect character, growth phase and
priorities. What is the signature style of the
Skill Exchange Makerspace building design
based on?
Every Makerspace will be different, as they
are personalized to reflect the culture of the
originating organization. In our pilot design, the
drivers are birthed from the ethos of Silo
Institute of Love & the values that it stood for
over the past 12 years which have cultivated a
culture for which the highly distinguishable
four (4) pillars which it was built, namely:
Love; Giving; Sacrifice; & Forgiveness.
Why does this design cut-through the
systematic perception of many architectural
designs where many designers and
developers focus on the NEXT BIG design
trend rather than a meaningful design
focusing on the user you are designing for?
These values have impacted peoples hearts,
minds and relationships with others,
empowering them to become leaders and
make a change in their environment. We have
thus developed the design upon this social
construct. However, the irony is that, these
values are inclined to the future which is why
the design of this Makerspace models both
relevancy and application.
19
How does the Skill Exchange design incorporate purpose, community’s
passion and emotions into the architectural design?
The entrance facade of the structure stands as a prominent symbol along
Moshoeshoe Street, a key arterial route cutting through Sebokeng which is
also the main route linking the Vaal to Johannesburg. The order upon which
the centre stands has been portrayed by the 4 pillars that form the portico
of the building. This symbol has also been evoked by four internal columns
within the workspace. The internal open plan layout of the workspace is a
catalyst for a culture of collaboration and exchange which is a break away
from the conventional learning and working spaces we have become
accustomed to. There are no boundaries inhibiting the flow of positive
energies, intellectual exchange, social upliftment and spiritual encounter
that embodies the space.
Where do you think this design inspires “action” that unites the community
for a single orientated goal?
Irrespective of race, gender, social and economic status, every user of the
space is placed at a level playing field and given the opportunity to interact
with like-minded individuals. This open attitude creates a an effective
lessons learnt feedback loop that inspires creative problem-solving.
Volunteer
Recruitment
By Pheladi Chiloane - Yali Southern Leadership Centre
Edited by Thato Molefi, The Global League
Skills-based volunteering is the new training ground for career
development. Why does YALI feel that this could be a new leap for
leadership development?
Obviously, developing Africa's leaders requires "borderless" networks and
collaboration. To find solutions to the continents problems, establishing
cross functional partnerships is crucial. For a continent always catching up
in both professional experiences and requisite leadership capacities;
volunteering is a way to stay ahead of the curve. That alone is an incentive
to personal development which influences communities and peers. This
builds a culture of sharing and celebrating individual member’s
achievements thus building formidable and selfless leaders. Uncovering
passion, morals and ethics at the cornerstone of public and private sectors
that the African continent needs to be self-reliant.
21
Proof Copy: Not optimized for high quality printing or digital distribution
So what opportunities can be explored from gaining experience within the
lower pyramid market, most evident within the continent of Africa?
Fortunately, Skill Exchange Makerspace creates a platform that offers a
different lens for youth from all walks of life by exploring opportunity
within challenges. This concept allows youth to explore not only income
generating and job opportunities but generate insights from behaviors to
identify new markets. It introduces youth to the possibility of an inclusive
social business value chain that can only be achieved from collaboration,
selfless exposure and communication. Knowing that showing initiative by
simply volunteering can break the wheel of poverty is always the first step
to achieving not only your ultimate dreams and goals but those that can
rebuild the continent.
How does service learning shape tomorrow’s approach to personal and
career development?
In my opinion, volunteering in the modern business and public sector
environment is a conducive tool for youth to build a career and personal
development without the “Fear of Making Mistakes” which tends to detract
99% of the youth from being innovative, high performers, experts and the
biggest human breakthrough- learning. This is based on the emphasis that if
a person undertakes duties that are not for monetary gains then results
will be purely based on passion hence will be more attuned to the process
and the prospect of building a future not just for an individual but rather for
populations that cannot establish mechanisms to do so. Volunteering
provides a window for self-discovery however it also offers a perspective
of the different cultures and behaviours which help us become more
emotionally intelligent.
22
Continued- Where does YALI see service learning as
a means to building social currency for
professional career?
Public sector, entrepreneurs and the civic sector
although independent, are interdependent sectors
that need to work together as they influence each
other on a larger scale. Service learning encourages
a blend of those sector knowledge areas that a
professional career can benefit from that results
in forming life-time relationships that can manifest
into inclusive value chains. This drives diverse
thinking and positive influence that can translate
into generating tangible value.
Whom would benefit from a service learning
experience from such a diverse pool of Africa’s
young population?
The concept of volunteering for the large pool of
employable youth in Africa is that it will be able to
separate the leaders from followers. So in a sense
it is possible for the majority of youth to benefit
from volunteering because there would be those
that initiate and establish projects as well as create
employment and on the other hand there would be
the others that would benefit from gaining skills and
knowledge through employment in various
ventures.
Pilot Planning
After establishing the anchors of our project from our functioning partners;
we planned a program outline. The pilot would focus on building
competencies on our designated programmes for students with limited work
experience and disadvantaged youth for work in the Sports, Technology,
Entrepreneurship, Arts & Management sectors and it would have two phases
of competency achievement. As part of the competency-based evaluation 10
companies will participate to create work readiness requirements for a
universal standardization on the work learning experience,200 eligible
students from three high schools, one university and the community
members may participate in the pilot program.
Phase I : Request For
Application & Selection
Time-line :3 months
Request For Application (RFA) process acknowledges that our PBL & PJBL
approach to learning, directed by competency & assessment requires field
experience in order to replace the teacher-centric, traditional and
dispersed professional development and educational systems composed
of internships, apprenticeships and course work graduation requirements.
However, standardized testing and the move towards common core
requires extensive sector consultation to ensure proficiency, standards &
competency throughout the designated industries within our
programmes. Therefore as part of RFA process, employers from 10
companies and 200 learners will select the duration and existing
professional development requirements they wish to replace with project
& problem-based learning.
Timeline :14 months
Refer to RFA form for further details on requirements, selection criteria,
format, timelines and expectations.
Phase II : Program
Implementation
Projects (3 months): PBL & interdisciplinary PJBL, conducted in the
makerspace requires an exhibition of personal, academic and workplace
standards of performance, peer-assessment, self-assessment &
formative assessment. After summative assessment/testing, students
can then graduate with an Skills Development Certificate NQFL 5 which
covers comprehensive workplace experience.
Advanced Diploma (10 months): PBL & interdisciplinary PJBL, conducted in
the workplace requires an exhibition of personal, academic and workplace
standards of performance, peer-assessment, self-assessment &
formative assessment. After summative assessment/testing, students
can then graduate with an HEQF Level 7 Advanced Diploma as well as
25
comprehensive workplace experience.
The outcomes of PBL & PJBL exhibitions and assessment are clearly
stated at the beginning of the programme/ course, so that:
· Learners know what they have to be able to do
· Mentors/Guides understand what learning must be provided
· Organizations poses the skill level required by their people.
To build the capacity for the pilot; all industry partners, The Global
League provides formal and informal workshop sessions on a number of
areas, including:
- The importance of the hybrid approach of project-based & problembased
learning; and the implications of this for up-skilling in Africa.
- The importance of the HEQF and the implications the framework has
on academic institutions & companies across Africa.
- The introduction of PBL-PJBL and assessment methodology to South
Africa, what it is and the value it offers to students, assistance staff,
organizations and the sector as a whole.
- Specific actions the Skill Exchange Makerspace would need to take
to gain accreditation and certification.
- An overview of the role of Competency Skills Log Books & Duly
Performance in PJBL-PBL and the benefits that they offer to all
parties.
