THE STAR OF THE SHOW
In 2017 the ‘pink star’ diamond shattered all previous
auction records when it sold for $97 million.
Just five minutes into the auctioning process in Hong
Kong, a telephone bidder claimed the 59.60-carat
mixed-cut, internally flawless diamond. The chairman of
Hong Kong jeweller Chow Tai Fook placed the winning
bid and renamed the rock CTF Pink Star, in memory of
the company’s founder.
Since being mined in 1999 by De Beers in Africa, the
record-breaking diamond has undergone two years of
meticulous cutting and polishing. The CTF Pink Star
belongs to the rare subgroup inclusive of only the most
chemically pure of all diamond crystals. It’s crystal clear
this was a stone worth investing in.
POCKET A PROFIT
Meet the Swiss-made pocket watch that fetched an astonishing
$33 million at an auction in Geneva.
In November 2014, the fully unique Patek Philippe
‘Supercomplication’ pocket watch beat its own world record
when an anonymous buyer trumped a bevy of competitive
bidders. A total of 110 wheels, 430 screws and 70 jewels
make up this sensational timepiece.
Some years prior, the pocket watch had been purchased by
a member of the Qatari royal family, but had to be returned
as part of a debt replacement. Since its return, the value of
Patek Philippe has increased substantially, much to the delight
of auction house, Sotheby’s.
