1. SUPPORT
A support ‘team’ can go a long way towards
helping you stay on track towards your goals.
Who’s on your support team? They’re the people
who encourage and help you along the way.
Perhaps they look after your kids while you’re
exercising, or maybe your number one supporter
is a partner who has dinner ready for you when
you come home after a workout. A workout
buddy or personal trainer can also form part of
your support crew.
Surround yourself with these supporters to
increase your chances of success.
2. PLANNING
Planning is a crucial element for success. A
fitness plan is a template or diary where you can
include what you’re going to do and when you’re
going to do it – e.g. Monday 6pm: Pilates class.
An effective fitness plan should consider your
goals, personal situation and potential barriers to
success. It should also include a ‘plan B’, for when
things don’t go as planned!
Before you start your fitness routine, make
sure you know when and how it will fit into your
current lifestyle.
4. PERSONAL INSPIRATION
Everyone is motivated in different ways. First and
foremost, it’s crucial you have strong internal
drivers that will provide the ‘hunger’ for you to
achieve your goals. This comes down to knowing
the deep reasons why your goals are important
to you (and reminding yourself of them along
the way).
On more of a surface level, decide what other
factors will help motivate you on your fitness
journey. These will be different for everyone and
could include things like:
• Journaling your progress; wins and challenges;
• Creating an inspiring ‘vision board’ to illustrate
what you want;
• Setting yourself a reward for reaching a big
goal, and perhaps smaller rewards for reaching
milestones along the way.
Here’s to your long-term health and fitness
success – it’s time to go out and kick those goals!
3. PREPARATION
Preparation is the stage to consider after you
have a solid plan in place. What still needs to
happen to get you into the ‘action’ phase? Do
you need to join a gym or purchase a new pair of
running shoes? Perhaps you need to start making
your lunch the night before in order to get up
for an early fitness session? Sometimes you will
need to create new habits during the preparation
phase to get you set for action.
