Hey Torn and heartsick,
When it comes to parents and what they’d like, it’s always best to
be honest with them. Tell them how you feel and how their rules
bother and inhibit you. Hopefully, by being open and explaining
how you feel, both sides will come to understand each other and
you can make a compromise. I hope things go your way.
A Fellow High School Student
Dear Torn and heartsick 15-year-old,
You would feel torn and heartsick lying to your parents so I suggest
that you tell them the truth. Let your parents know about the
positive qualities which you admire in your friend and demonstrate
evidence to convince them that the new friendship is a positive
influence in your life. For example, does this guy encourage you to
do your best in school or inspire you to peruse healthy interests?
I also advise you to be honest with your new guy friend and let
him know that you would like to get to know him as a friend but
that it will take some convincing, and more time, for your parents
to accept a male friend in your life. If this guy is worthy of your
friendship, he will accept your situation and support you being
honest with your parents. A true friendship based on honesty and
genuine acceptance will be an honorable treasure and the exact
opposite of torn and heartsick.
