MOM’S PERSPECTIVE by Cheryl Pangborn It was the real thing here in coastal Georgia, and wow! What an exciting event for this south Florida girl. It was officially my first experience with snow, except for the time SoFl had the “5 minute flurries”’ when I was in 5th grade. This was actual snowfall that piles up and we can make snowballs, snowmen, and even sled (except there are no hills here.) Even though I was the newbie in coastal Georgia, I got the sense the longtime locals were as excited as I since the last snowfall in the area with accumulation was 1989. I definitely detected an underlying vibe of concern with this weather event. Talk of power outages, school and business closings, driving concerns all eerily similar to the “cone of death” panic I’m used to. I’m learning that the low country does not do well in any extreme weather and if conditions are average, well then, South Georgia has got it covered. I wake up Wednesday morning and check my weather app, which says snow and little flakes are falling across the screen. I run to the window, but I can’t see outside because the windows are frozen. I look out the front door: gray, dreary, but no snow. My hubby and I get the fireplace going and sit down with steaming coffee but I’m just bursting — “where is the snow?” I need to see out the windows, so I venture outside with rain boots and a jacket to scrape some of the ice off the windows. I step out onto the brick steps and promptly slide down all of them on my behind because even though they just look wet, they’re actually solid ice. Strike one for the Floridian. So it hasn’t even snowed yet and I’ve had a snowmageddon injury. I’m sore and feeling foolish, but hobbling around in pain is not going to curb my enthusiasm. I keep a vigil at the still icy window while I swiftly order real snow boots from Amazon. Slowly but surely we get some pebbly ice rain, which eventually leads to the snow. Of course since my fall, ice is my new nemesis and I’m being overly cautious with counsel to everyone about being careful. Within an hour – it’s a winter wonderland. Everyone is outside, children are giggling and everyone’s happy. There are snowball fights and snowmen are being built and we’re taking pictures like it’s the last snowfall ever, which isn’t so far fetched in these parts, so we keep this going for hours. Mostly though we’re frozen. I’m toughing it out because I don’t want to miss a minute, but I see my teenagers are about 15 minutes into it and they’re heading for the house. Now starts the cycle of wet shoes, gloves, soggy socks, and a trail of puddles that I’m forced to deal with all day. Outside. Inside. “Can we have cocoa?” Outside again. More clothes are accumulating and I’m running the clothes dryer on a constant loop. Remember, I have teenagers, not toddlers. I’m at that point where I’m like “If you go out, you stay out!” Meanwhile, even in my injured state, I’m determined to be outside. Eventually we get a snowman going with the neighbor’s family. My best friend neighbor is a pro snowman builder and so we get seriously working on this guy. Moments later we look around and note we have been abandoned by all the children and are building this ourselves. Head shaking and eye rolling, and that’s from us, not the teenagers. Overall, I absolutely enjoyed every snowmageddon moment. I was melancholy as I watched the white of our yard slowly turn back to green. I wished upon a snowflake that it wouldn’t be 25-plus years before another snowfall (and also that I’d remember how dangerous ice is). I’m glad I took all the pictures and videos to preserve my snowmageddon memories. I learned that a snow shovel is different from a regular shovel, and what black ice is. I’ve graduated from Snow Dummy to Snow Bunny. Living in the low country has been quite exciting for this Florida girl so far and I find myself asking what unexpected adventure will be next?
