PROFILE Vanessa finds her by Dale King Vocalist Vanessa Simpson’s mom and dad recall how their youngest daughter picked up a microphone when she was about nine years old – and never put it down. Now 21, the hard-working, up-and-coming songstress from Margate, daughter of Mae and Joe Simpson, has a lengthy list of musical credentials – and is constantly considering ways to broaden the scope of her talents. “I’m looking for songs with meaning; music with substance,” Vanessa said during a recent school break. In addition to performing, she attends Palm Beach State College in Boca Raton where she is studying communications. Her musical repertoire includes R&B, pop, and country, among others, and she has a particular knack for blues. “Each genre opens new doors,” she said. Her main objective is to find a niche in the music field. She’s notched quite a few successes in the past years, including performances at the Rotary Club Future Stars show, the Palm Beach International Film Festival kickoff party in Boca Raton, and a regular Vanessa Simpson at Café Resto in Boca Raton. When famed pop star Connie Francis received an award last year for her contributions to the music industry, Vanessa was there to sing Connie’s blockbuster hit from 1960, “Where the Boys Are,” for her. “Meeting her was awesome,” Vanessa said. “She really enjoyed the song. It was a great experience.” No matter whether she is covering Adele’s “One and Only,” Whitney Houston’s “I Wanna Dance with Somebody,” or performing a passionate rendition of Celine Dion’s “The Prayer,” the voice, style, and intonation are all Vanessa’s. She can rein in high notes with ease or hit low tones with a sensuous resonance. She exudes confidence on stage, but still has a nervous giggle that brims with young girl charm. While Vanessa counts many contemporary performers among those who inspire her – Adele, Celine, Sam Smith and Bruno Mars – she also performs the tunes of Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Nat King Cole. She has recorded a powerful, bluesy version of Eric Burdon & the Animals’ “House of the Rising Sun” and Barbra Streisand’s up-tempo “Don’t Rain on my Parade.” “People say I don’t sing, I convey a message,” she said. Her oldest sister, Christina, influenced Vanessa to embark on the road to a music career. “I would tag along with my two older sisters [Christina, 25, and Gina, 22] to their vocal lessons and listen in on them.” Once she realized she could perform on stage without fear, she entered vocal competitions. She was a runner-up at both the South Florida Fair and in her first Rotary Future Stars show, where her voice filled the big stage of the Mizner Park Amphitheater in Boca Raton. She recently auditioned for the TV show, The Voice. “She’s got the talent,” said Vanessa’s main promoter and mentor, Boca Raton artist Yaacov Heller. “She’s one in a billion. She has a fabulous voice.” A sculptor, portrait painter and jewelry designer Heller said, “I believe in Vanessa. I’m connecting her with the right people. I know a lot of people in show business.” Heller arranged for Vanessa to sing for Connie Francis and helped put together the series at Café Resto. Two evenings before her Jan. 18 performance at the cafe, she was asked to be a guest singer at a sold-out show at Matteo’s, another Boca Raton restaurant. “This was a performer who has an entire act and had sold out his show at Matteo’s, yet he still wanted her to come in and be part of his program,” Heller said. Eying the future, Vanessa is searching for broader horizons and bigger stages. “The bigger the stage, the bigger the opportunities,” she said. Coming from a close-knit family helps as she gets lots of encouragement from her parents and her sisters. “My mother says you have to give it your all.” While her career is just getting started, Heller said “there is no doubt in my mind that she will succeed.” P 48 MARCH 2018
