Fields connects with community
“That month is life changing.
You get out there, it’s completely
quiet other than us and we just
laugh. You could be in the worst
mood, but whatever is going on in
your life you walk out there and it
just changes your perspective.”
“It is cold. But other than a few
crab bites it’s mainly just such a
mental discipline and challenge.
We keep it sort of meditative because
you have to adjust; without
going above the kidney line you
just walk out and hang out there
as long as you can until we go under.
We’re in togs not wetsuits and
if it’s winter and you get under
that nine degrees it can be quite
dangerous if you get chilled in the
back. We’ve tried double dipping
in winter but it gives you an ice
headache. ”
“The warmer months are
nothing, you get out there, have
a laugh but in winter it takes
discipline to get out of bed especially
when it’s raining. But you
do it – and nothing else matters.
It’s beautiful, it’s always different.
Usually in winter there’s no
waves, everything is still and you
see all kinds of things. We have
George our dolphin and we have a
seal that come and visits.”
“You’ve got to go and do it to
understand. It’s life-changing, it’s
amazing.”
New board
member gets
500 votes
• By Sarla Donovan
FINANCIAL management
and the ability to connect with
people are strengths Tyrone
Fields hopes to bring to his
new role as a member of the
Banks Peninsula Community
Board.
The Labour-aligned People’s
Choice candidate won the
Lyttelton subdivision byelection
for the board with
500 votes, putting him well
ahead of nearest rivals,
Independent Citizens
candidate Robyn Struthers
on 185, and Yvette Couch-Lewis
with 156.
Lyttelton bar manager Ashley
Stanbridge gained 105 votes and
independent candidate Paul
Dietsche 62.
The return rate for votes was
42 per cent.
Mr Fields is a public sector
analyst and father of two, who
will shortly finish a master’s
degree in social work.
“I’m feeling pretty happy,
really excited and pleased that
people wanted me to be their
representative,” said Mr Fields
the day after the win.
“It’s been quite humbling.”
He had knocked on a “hell
of a lot of doors and made a
lot of phone calls,” and being
endorsed by Port Hills Labour
MP Ruth Dyson had been
“huge,” he said.
Mr Fields will be sworn in on
Monday, and had his first board
seminar two days ago.
“I’ve been meticulous about
record keeping through this
campaign – who wants this,
who said that. I’d really like to
focus on those little things that
people talk to me about and do
the basics well in that regard,”
he said.
“From a social work
perspective I’ve got some
things that I’d like to be able to
achieve in terms of helping
perhaps elderly residents to
have more voice and social
connectedness and work
REPRESENT:
Public sector
Tyrone Fields
has won the
Lyttelton
subdivision
by-election
for the Banks
Peninsula
Community
Board.
with places like Community
House on that . . . it’s a
combination of the practical,
on-the-ground stuff, and then
helping foster and facilitate a
framework for that big-picture
stuff as well.”
Mr Fields grew up on
Winchester St and College St
and attended St Joseph’s School.
Former board chairwoman
