Taylors Mistake took home the majority of the awards, including top lifeguard, Patrice de Beer, volunteer, Craig Jamieson, and rookie, Brieanna Cox, along with rescue of the year. The prestigious top lifeguard gong went to Mr de Beer for his “exemplary service”, including more than 55 hours of voluntary patrolling. He told Bay Harbour News he was “chuffed” at the award, saying he didn’t do anything special. “I just love being on the beach . . . I’m there too often according to my wife.” He said it was his way of giving back to the community. The 48-year-old Redcliffs engineer got into lifeguarding 10 years ago after shifting to Christchurch from the Netherlands. He wanted his children to be comfortable swimming in the sea, so he went along to a club open day at Taylors Mistake. “I got roped into training and then I was there every weekend.” Though Taylors Mistake has a reputation as a dangerous beach, Mr de Beer says he treats every beach the same. And in terms of what makes a good lifeguard, he says being flexible, expecting the unexpected, being helpful and doing what you can, whether it’s cleaning the beach, cleaning a toilet, doing first aid or a rescue. “We’re there to provide a service.” Taylors Mistake also took out rescue of the year after a team of lifeguards plucked a dozen swimmers from the waves during a hot day on January 18 when a flash rip took two groups of swimmers out beyond their depth. Two rescue boards, 11 rescue tubes and an IRB were involved in returning the swimmers safely to shore. Sumner took home a total of five awards on Saturday night, including the honour of top IRB club. Committee member Alistair Malcolm said the club was traditionally strong using the IRB and the award was recognition of the number of new drivers and crewmen they put through training and into regional and national competitions. “It’s always been a big part of Sumner; with the big surf at Scarborough it’s often the best way to get out and rescue people,” said Mr Malcolm.
