Wednesday May 23 2018 News Latest Christchurch news at www.star.kiwi BAY HARBOUR PAGE 9 Coveted award for firefighters • By Sarla Donovan LYTTELTON Volunteer Fire Brigade was presented with the coveted community spirit award following the Firefighter Sky Tower Stair Challenge at the weekend. Brigades from the Bay Harbour News area were well-represented at the event with teams from Governors Bay, Lyttelton, Akaroa and Diamond Harbour competing. They made up some of the 900 firefighters who climbed the Auckland Sky Tower on Saturday as part of the annual fundraising challenge for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer New Zealand. Lyttelton team leader Kevin Hurl said it was a “huge thing” for the team to be gifted a tewhatewha carved by last year’s community spirit award winners, Keri Keri Fire Brigade. Considered the event’s top award, it is created by the previous year’s recipients and given to the team whose community has gone above and beyond in support of their brigade’s efforts. The Lyttelton brigade has raised nearly $120,000 for Leukaemia and Blood Cancer NZ over the past eight years. Said Mr Hurl: “This award is for the people of Lyttelton who year after year have supported our Sky Tower efforts and have got behind our climbers.” The carved tewhatewha is made of kauri and inlaid with paua shell. And in an impressive individual achievement, Diamond Harbour’s Mark Patterson was the fastest South Islander and the fastest volunteer firefighter, in a time of 10min 50sec. He finished 10th out of 950 competitors, the second year in a row he has finished in 10th place. The quickest time was a blistering 8min 11sec. Diamond Harbour Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Bob Palmer said it was a superb effort by Mr Patterson and great to see the community support for the team, which raised just under $7000. Firefighters carry up to 25kg of equipment up the 1103 steps and 51 storeys of the Sky Tower. SUPPORT: The Diamond Harbour team raised just under $7000.
