Fuel For Thought
BY JOHN HALL, PRESIDENT
The fun awaits you just around the next curve!
This T year’s Car Show
once o again shows
how h good planning,
commitment, c and
a great team can
produce p an incredible
event. ev Showcasing
classic c cars at Green
Valley Park with its shade trees, lake, Veterans’
Memorial and ramadas evokes comparisons
to legendary concours events such as
Monterey, California. This year’s Friday evening
cruise around Payson truly showcased
the town. Special thanks to Ken Gunderson
and Mary Cailey for their work coordinating
this great ride. The Bertram’s burger burn
complete with first-rate homemade baked
goods and entertainment from Payson High
School highlighted a great start to the Show.
From the quality of this year’s entrants and
TECH T TIP
vendors to the incredible range and
presentation of our raffle items (who
else but Bobi Beveridge could showcase
a load of gravel and a diamond ring so
perfectly?), the 19th Cruise-In maintained
its reputation as the Northland’s premier
event. As I walked around the site, all I
heard were compliments from entrants,
sponsors and visitors. Hats off to Steve &
Margie Fowler and Nate & Patty Johnson
and everyone on their Car Show teams
for an exemplary show! Special thanks
to Boyd Miller and his beautification crew
– once again Boyd made sure we left the
park in better shape than we found it!
Our challenge now is to encourage and
support the leadership for next year’s
20th Anniversary Cruise-In. Key team
leadership roles present opportunities to
help shape (continued on Page 11)
BY B JOHN CAILEY
Welcome W to “tech tip #9.” Should you trust your engine machinist?
That T was one of the threads on another automotive website that I
frequent. fr It turned in to an amazingly long thread, with everyone
giving g
their opinion (and you know what opinions are like and at
times it became ugly!) I’d like to share a recent experience I had in this regard and of
course, give you my opinion. My wife and I are new to Rim Country area, so I am slowly
building my automotive contacts. One of those was to find (continued on Page 4)
Honoring our
Veterans
By John Hall
On the first Sunday in April, Patty Johnson,
MJ and I were privileged to join
a small group of family and friends in
honoring one of our WWII veterans who
came ashore at Normandy on D-Day
and later served in Patton’s 3rd Army.
Floyd Landers, now 92 years old,
was medically retired from the Army in
1945 due to his wounds from the war,
but had never received the medals which
reflected his service.
Floyd has been our guest for the
RCCAC Veterans' Day Lunch.
Through the efforts of Col. Bill Sahno,
a friend of the Club and of our Vets to
Lunch event from its inception, and coordinated
with Senator McCain’s office,
the medals were obtained and presented
to Floyd in a handsome wooden shadowbox.
We congratulate Floyd on his awards,
thank him for his outstanding service,
and look forward to his joining us for
lunch again this Veterans’ Day.
TECH TIP continued...
building my automotive contacts. One
of those was to find a reputable machinist.
A racing friend (and automotive
teacher) gave me the name of someone
he uses in the Phoenix area. I contacted
him a few months ago (as I am in the
process of building another engine for
my race car) and brought over my block
to have work done on it. After looking
over his shop and testing his knowledge
with a few questions, I was more
than impressed. He was doing machine
work on engines that cost more than
my house, and the workmanship looked
impeccable - as did his shop. I ended up
buying all the parts I needed as well as
having him do all the necessary machine
work to put together the motor I wanted.
About a month ago, I brought everything
home for assembly. All the machining
clearances were dead on. As I started
to assemble the motor, I found that he
forgot to clearance the rods to clear the
bottom of the cylinder bores on 4 of the
8 cylinders. All the critical clearances
involving sophisticated machine work
were perfect, yet the work involving a
die grinder (that anyone would do) was
half forgotten. Needless to say, he was
pretty embarrassed and more than willing
to correct his error at no $ to me. I
fixed it myself in a few hours. So, the
moral of this story (IMO) is: “Trust,
but verify!” We are all human and
make mistakes. Would I use this guy in
the future? Absolutely! Ta Ta, John

From the Friday events to Saturdays
Fantastic Car Show, the 2012 Rim
Country Classic Auto Club's "Beeline
Cruise-In" was a race well run and a
job well done! Car Show Chairpersons,
Margie & Steve Fowler, and Nate &
Patty Johnson, Co-Chairs along with the
host of competent committee members
resulted in a successfully coordinated
two day show. The months of planning
and preparation, plus backing from our
sponsors, resulted in over 220 pleased
participants, as well as a team of tired
but happy workers. Almost everyone
came away feeling like a winner!
The FUN began on Friday night with
a scenic cruise around town with the
RCCAC President and his wife, John
Hall and MJ, in the lead followed by
Car Show Chair, Margie Fowler, driving
her 1935 Packard with Mayor Kenny
Evans and his wife, Linda. Payson Police
Department helped to direct the cruise.
Back at Green Valley Park, the Burger
Burn dinner was in full swing with all
of the helpers ready to fill plates with
wonderful food and a bright welcoming
smiles. The Payson High School Jazz
Band played and delighted the crowd.
Jinx Pyle gave a short history of when
cars first came into Payson and the
roads from here to the “Valley” it was
quite a tale. Well the weekend was off to
a fantastic start!
Showcasing 2012 "Cruise-In" SUCCESS!
Saturday morning dawned bright and
early for a large contingent of organizers.
It wasn’t long before participants (of
all sizes and shapes) arrived at the park
and began prepping their vehicles for the
big show. The PERFECT spring weather
enticed a good number of community
members to stroll the park for a visual
treat. Day-long rock’n’roll tunes played
for all to hear. Vendors aplenty lined the
park with food to temp and treasures
to have to take home. The Hospitality
Booth was a-buzz as fun abounded with
"Bob-Bee" Beveridge and crew delighting
passersby’s with their antics and
cajoling them out of their money with
jewelry and gift baskets to bid on for
the raffle. The Top 10 Host Trophies,
Top 10 Guest Trophies and the Best of
Show beauties were moved into a winner’s
lineup by the band stand for all to
admire. All the trophies (62 total) were
presented to well-deserving winners.
Also, the Longest Distance Award went
to dear friends of Steve & Margie’s (Ray
& Tammy Tollini) who came all the way
from Northern California - Redwood Valley,
some 990 miles away.
For those who worked to make the 2012
Beeline Cruise-In a HUGE SUCCESS,
their satisfaction came from both the
enjoyment evidenced in the participants,
as well as the camaraderie of the committee
itself. This was truly terrific teamwork
by a dedicated pit crew. THANK
YOU ALL FOR ALL YOUR HARD WORK!
You are the Bee’s Knees!
Over $13,500 was made this year!
Twelve happy charities from our community
will be the lucky recipients of
all of our hard work. We have set aside
$1500 for 2013 show.
Consider being a part of
the team for next year.
Take a victory lap Car
Show Committee!
Steve and I were presented this very
cute appreciation card from Darlene
Pierman that we wanted to share with
everyone.
There’s a sigh of relief
Throughout the town
The car show is over
And no one’s around.
The park was a-buzzing
With bright worker bee;
The grass was shaded
With cars, not trees.
The streets were lined
With relics restored,
The 2012 RCCAC Mothers’ Day luncheon
and celebration was again held at
Rimside Grill in Pine. MJ Hall presided
over the event: setting up the menu
with Rimside, welcoming all, handing
out hand-crafted soaps as door prizes,
ensuring that all ran smoothly. Conversation
sparkled; laughter punctuated the
afternoon and flowed from table to table.
Special prize drawings were held with
the assistance of Sara Abraham and
winners were able to choose from a
variety of gifts ranging from gift certificates
and Rimside tee shirts to locally
hand-crafted stained glass sun-catchers
and soaps.
Special thanks to MJ for another great
event!
The 25th Anniversary of the Historic
Route 66 Fun Run was held May 4-6th.
There were over 850+ registrants for
this event representing many states and
Canada, France, and Germany. It is a
true visual overdose just to see these
vehicles and the modifications and
restorations the owners have made. The
Fun Run begins in Seligman, AZ, with
many activities on Friday continuing
on Saturday with all the cars lining up
on Main street for the morning run to
Kingman. Route 66 goes through The
Grand Canyon Caverns, Peach Springs
to experience the Hualapai Cultural
Center and Art Expo along with tribal pit
BBQ and Indian tacos. Continuing on to
or through Hackberry for the Route 66
Visitors Center, winding through Valle
Vista and into Kingman for the Car Show
and Shine in the downtown area. With
so many cars, it is at least 3 blocks long
and 3 blocks up so you can meander all
day. Lots of restaurants and shops to
check out. On Sunday the vehicles start
again on the Route 66 continuing to Cool
Springs with a gift shop and restored
1926 Mobil Station. On to Oatman, a
true Old West town with live music, wandering
burros, staged gunfights, saloons
and souvenirs. The last leg of the trip
takes you to Topock/Golden Shores
for the awards ceremony and food and
raffle prizes.
Throughout the entire run, lots of cars
would stop along the way, set up chairs,
and wave at everyone passing. Lots of
smiles, lots of fun!
Due to the close proximity of this
event, we as a club, should try to win
the “club participation” award trophy.
With a little effort we could do this.
See ya next year!
FUEL FOR THOUGHT
(continued from Page 1)
the upcoming event. We need to have the
team leaders firmly in place by July in
order to confirm the show. Let us know
what talents you would like to contribute!
As the calendar turned to May, we
enjoyed another wonderful Mothers’
Day celebration at the Rimside Grill in
Pine. The ladies received beautiful gifts
and door prizes including locally crafted
stained-glass sun catchers, cards and
hand-made soaps. The special menu
selections, laughter and good conversation,
beautiful weather, and winning gift
tickets drawn by Sara Abraham helped to
make the event both casual and elegant!
Thanks again to MJ for coordinating this
wonderful day.
May also provided the opportunity to
join in special events such as the Pine/
Strawberry May Celebration and the Rim
Country Corvette Club show at Chapman
Chevrolet. Chapman is one of our longtime
sponsors of our Cruise-In and we
should all support our many local (and
valley!) sponsors.
Upcoming events such as Garage Sales,
Ice Cream Socials, lunch and breakfast
runs, visits to local nursing homes and
participation in the wide variety of car
shows which bloom across the high
country promise to make a memorable
summer for us all. As we turn our attention
to these new events, it is wonderful
to again have memories of a great Car
Show in our rearview mirror!
Remember: Drive with gusto
and let each apex and
straightaway paint a smile
on your face!
