ACT
3. Rehearse, Rehearse, Rehearse.
Practicing perfect execution of each dance
step must continue into your emotions also.
Treat every practice like there is an audience
in front of you. Put on your personification
as soon as you learn your choreography.
Appropriate facial expressions practiced
continuously will connect you to the crowd.
Try these two easy exercises
to help you become a more
expressive mover!
Write out a character:
Find a dance that is already choreographed
that requires the dancers to tell a story.
Write a description of a character in the
dance. Write how the dance transforms the
character you have created.
Answer the questions:
What led the character to the dance? What
does the character think and feel? Does any
of this change throughout the dance?
Writing all this information out will help you
better understand the character and help
you pinpoint the proper emotions.
Speak while dancing:
Perform a routine while telling a story about
it. The difficulty is to continually speak and
dance at the same time. Just as there is no
"dead air" time in the dance, there shouldn't
be any "dead air" in the speaking. This is
a challenge, but the more proficient you
become at mastering this, the more capable
you will become at "D" Acting without
breaking character.
Transforming from an amateur dancer
into a refined performer is magical, but it
should also be enjoyable. Dale Carnegie
said "People rarely succeed unless they
have fun in what they are doing." Keep
dancing and take pleasure in the art you
are creating!
