Woods backs Denton Park reprieve
Hornby
residents’
views on
Denton Park
have been heard
ONE OF the most rewarding
parts of being the MP for
Wigram is seeing the real
impact that our communities
have on decisions in their own
backyards.
I heard the concern in the
Hornby community last year
when it was proposed that
Denton Park’s reserve status be
changed in order to build the
new pool and library.
I am passionate about Hornby
getting these new facilities and
applaud the city council for
them.
However, I did support the
community in their efforts
to save Denton Park. I firmly
believe, along with many locals,
that Denton Park is the heart of
Hornby and want to see it stay
that way
It was great to be able to help
out and ensure that locals could
participate in the process and
submit their voice to the city
council, and massive efforts were
put in by organisations like the
rugby club and the ‘Save Denton
Park’ group.
The city council received more
than 1400 submissions which
made it obvious that this issue
struck a real chord – 84 per cent
of those submissions opposed
the change. It was incredibly
heartening to then see that the
city council hearings panel has
listened to the Hornby community
and recommended against
making changes to Denton
Park’s reserve status.
I know that many people in
Hornby will be feeling very
relieved with this outcome.
The final say still lies with the
community board but I’m very
pleased that locals have been
heard.
It has been a big win for everyone
who has rallied around to
save their park, and it’s important
now that we also start exploring
other options for the site,
such as the land available at Kyle
Park, to make sure that Hornby
gets the state-of-the-art facility
that our communities deserve.
Gary Knight shares his
thoughts on shops giving up
plastic bags
It is encouraging to note the
responsible attitude by business
entities in taking a possible step
to help reduce the environmental
plastic waste footprint.
It is commendable that
Papanui and Hornby Mitre 10
MEGA stores, along with all 128
nationwide stores and also
Hammer Hardware, have
jointly agreed to phase out plastic
bags from their checkouts from
July.
To reach such a unanimous
decision highlights the integrity
of the owner-operators of these
home improvement retailers.
Accolades are also extended to
Ferrymead Countdown and 10
other nationwide stores initiating
the same process initially prior to
its instigation in all 182 stores.
This pro-active move by these
major home improvement and
supermarket retailers, bears
testimony to their level of
community awareness in striving
to help reduce the demeaning
effect of plastic waste on our
environment.
Readers respond to a city
council proposal for more
cycle lanes and fewer car
parks on Memorial Ave
Bruce Marshall – $3 a litre
for gas might make this a brilliant
idea.
Dale Clutterback – The
city council needs to start
spending rates more wisely.
Spend on essentials and stop
finding new ways to waste
PHASE OUT:
Shops around
the city are no
longer offering
plastic bags.
our money. Can’t wait to vote
again.
Nicholas Smeaton –
Having seen the results of
other cycle lanes, this is an
incredibly stupid idea. The
city council needs to put the
whole business on hold until they
come up with a far less intrusive
layout.
Byron Clark – There will be a
tonne of angry comments but the
reality is we’re moving towards
the end of the age of the private
motor vehicle, and our cities
should be ready for that change.
Pleased the city council is future
focused.
Ashley Cook – What
about starting using trams/light
rail as something other than a
heritage trinket in Christchurch?
Build it now, so you don’t need
to build it when it’s desperately
needed.
