EDITORIAL
Cheap uncheerful
The key drivers for technology purchases
should make your customer look beyond price
Security has always been associated with the mindset of it
being a grudge purchase. In its resting state it adds no
specific improvement to life so (rather like insurance) it has
always been with a certain amount of lethargy that spending on
security appears to promote. Of course due to certain
developments in security systems, specifically with analytics,
there are functions that can add value in terms of gathering
business information so not every case meets the broad brush
stroke of being a total grudge purchase. But still the problem
persists.
This thinking does throw open the debate on how security
systems are bought, particularly in terms of focusing solely on
the price. If it’s a purchase they don’t really want to make then
it’s only expected that customers will look at the bottom line with
more emphasis than when it comes to buying something they are
motivated about. Fortunately for installers, distributors
commonly do not reveal their prices and many manufacturers are
also drawing in the reins on the amount of online portals pushing
stock to the public.
So what is the answer when it comes to talking to your
customers about price? This month our Panel looks at the ways
you can push ROI, quality and support to those who are only
interested in how much it all costs. Hopefully these are factors
that they will take on-board so that the long-term investment is
one that works for them, rather than a short-term approach that
requires system renewal sooner than they would have liked.
But we all do it don’t we? Whatever we buy, we too look at the
price as a major influencer on the final purchase. A little
knowledge however, makes you realise that there are a number
of reasons why two products that claim to do the same thing are
priced differently - especially when buying technology. Branding,
for one, is a powerful persuader of shoppers - just look at the
number of people who pay up to three times more for their Apple
phones than users of Huawei, now the second largest
manufacturer of mobile phones after Samsung. Look online and
you’ll see it’s quite tricky to find a negative review of Huawei
phones yet the more expensive Apple brand will still result in a
queue around the block when a new phone comes out. Branding
can be a big driver in the buying choice but the security industry
doesn’t yet have a brand that creates the same stir among users.
So selling security is much like selling any other type of
technology (apart from smartphones) in that the key deciders are
what the product does, extra features, how well it performs and
how long it will be relevant - a factor lengthened with firmware
upgrades these days.
We know that there are extremely cheap camera and panel
components available thus making it possible to produce a very
low cost option, but such a unit does not meet the key decider
requirements mentioned above -especially robustness.
If we are to hope that a security system is never bought solely
on price, it should never be sold on it too.
Boston Networks announces PEL Services acquisition
Boston Networks has completed the acquisition of PEL Services as it accelerates its plans for UK
growth. The purchase of London-based PEL for an undisclosed sum represents its first bolt-on
acquisition in the drive to establish Boston Networks as a major UK group and a national provider
of integrated life safety, security and networking services.
In brief
The Fire Industry
Association has announced
that two new courses are
now available.
The new qualification
pathway is designed for
those working within the
fire detection and alarm
sector, to provide
qualifications for designers,
installers, maintainers, and
commissioners. The two
new units, Health and
Safety, and the Environment
unit, are available to book
multiple services.
VWS now provides servicing and reactive
works for a number of Hillcrest’s components
including fire alarm detection, smoke vent,
CCTV and sprinkler systems.
Hillcrest contracts manager, David Conway
said: “We are delighted to appoint VWS as the
Group’s fire, safety and security servicing and
repair contractor.
“Previously we had over a dozen
contractors providing this service and it was
extremely difficult to manage both
performance and quality.”
VWS director, Graham McMonigle said: “We
are thrilled to be appointed as the Hillcrest
Group’s Fire, Safety and Security service
provider for the next three years.
“Over the course of the contract, VWS and
Hillcrest will work together to deliver
community benefit schemes which could
include work experience placements, class
name but a few.
“Having previously worked with Hillcrest on
smaller contracts we can’t wait to get started
on this one to strengthen our great working
relationship.
Due to the large size of the contract, VWS
will be recruiting two engineers from the
Edinburgh/Fife area and an apprentice to allow
them to provide a more responsive service
across Hillcrest’s areas of operation.
Cracking little product! #DualCom #MiniAir
LinkedIn Post – Alan Wheelans – Feb 23
Tweet us @CSLGroupLtd
This month Simon Banks
talks to Andy Croston,
Owner of Videcon. The
leading trade-only
distributor of security products
and services.
What is driving the need for wireless communications for CCTV amongst
Installers?
Recent improvements in technology now mean that products capable of
transmitting data and video can be increasingly used on remote sites that have
minimal power and/or limited access to broadband. We have witnessed excellent
growth in the video market for commercial and construction sites where valuable
stock and items of machinery are often left in vulnerable places. Furthermore,
mobile applications now provide fantastic means to self-monitor assets. Adding a
wireless communication device, such as a CSL Router, provides a cost-effective
solution for the transmission of data and video, with the provision of a
redundancy backup for network failure.
In your view how quickly will Installers start to migrate their DVRs to the
cloud?
Not as quickly as some cloud providers think! Whilst there are opportunities for
cloud applications in our industry I think that data storage costs will prohibit
market growth for cloud-based solutions. Nevertheless, we are currently involved
with many exciting projects that are very clear indicators that this technology will
be widespread in the near future.
How important are video analytics and what are the main advantages?
Deep Learning Video Analytics (DLVA) provide immeasurable benefits and
advantages to the security sector. There are already numerous enterprise
systems that have DLVA capability, however the real drive will occur when we
start to see it appearing as a mid-market product. By Q4 this year, our Concept
Pro product range will deliver powerful on-board processing with the capability to
deliver DLVA with greater than 90% accuracy. This is a significant step up from
the basic analytics currently available on the market and I am sure that a great
number of the UK monitoring stations and integrators will welcome these
significant reductions in false alarms. Our customers will be able to provide endusers
with solutions that currently fall way above their security budgets, such as
people counting, parking control and heat mapping, to name but a few.
Do you feel that CCTV installations today provide resolutions high enough
for criminal convictions?
Yes, system resolution has been in a strong place for many years now. As always,
camera placement and set-up have a massive effect on whether a system
provides sufficient coverage. Perfecting this can be down to rigorous and
comprehensive training and we run two – often oversubscribed – training days a
month. This is an indicator of the skills shortage the UK is currently facing! I am
constantly engaged in conversations with integrators who cite this as a key issue.
We are keen to support engineers in gaining a strong understanding of a
products’ capabilities.
What are the next major advances on the horizon for CCTV?
Recently in the USA, I was introduced to Neuro Networking, the next generation
of DLVA. Neural Networking will learn behavioural patterns of a scene, spot
unusual activity, cross reference this with a database image and report this to
the system administration. We are still at the development stage but Concept
Pro will be among the first to develop this technology in the European market.
With this on the horizon we can be sure that this is a very exciting time to be in
our industry and for the installers and integrators who embrace the changes
coming, the future is very bright indeed.
Vista VK2-MP4XVDIR28V12M
perhaps only relates to the 2MP version as this
model has the card slot and reset switch
positioned behind a hinged flap on the base of
the dome. This does at least have the benefit of
allowing the card to be changed without having to
remove the dome cover and potentially disturbing
the camera’s positioning.
What’s in the box?
Dome camera
Installation manual
Drilling template
Wall fixings and screws
Software CD
A motorised 2.8 to
12 mm lens allows
simple adjustment of
the required field of
view once installed.
H.264 and H.265
formats are available
with up to four
streams
This dome is a 4MP vandal resistant model
from the Vista VK2 range, with IP66 and IK10
protection ratings. A motorised 2.8 to 12 mm
lens allows simple adjustment of the required
field of view once installed. H.264 and H.265
formats are available with up to four streams. IR
LED illumination is stated up to 25 metres.
Getting started
The camera is supplied fully assembled but has a
protective film over the lens so it is necessary to
remove the clear dome to remove this before
testing. The clear dome cover is held in place by 4
captive security Torx screws. A flexible plastic
“lanyard” secures the dome to the main housing
but this can be unscrewed if necessary. Power can
be PoE or supplied from an external 12v power
supply. The supplied disk includes “Smart
Manager” discovery software to help identify the
camera on an Ethernet network. The unit is
supplied with DHCP enabled by default so if
connected to a suitably configured network a
local subnet address will be allocated.
Also included on the disk are Quick Install and
User Manuals for a wide range of Vista cameras,
the associated “Viper” recorders and Viper-
Central display and monitoring software.
Both the supplied user manual and a
downloaded version state that a Micro SD card
can be entered into the memory card holder on
the PCB behind the sensor module. This is also
shown as the location of a reset switch. This
Operation
When powered the camera can be accessed via a
web browser by simply selecting its IP address.
This will give options for viewing the live feed,
replaying recorded footage or setup. While
browsers such as Firefox, Chrome and Safari can
be used, IE is recommended as this appears to be
the only browser to provide access to all features
and highest image quality. IE does require an
ActiveX component to be installed but this
installed relatively quickly and reliably on both a
Win 9 and Win 10 PC.
A simple default administrator user name and
password is set by default so should be changed
prior to installation. If the password is lost, the
reset switch procedure will restore all default
conditions including its IP address.
An Alarm Output function is included to allow
audio messages to be generated at the camera;
unfortunately, the manual only states that the
audio file downloaded must be less than 512KB
without further information. Attempting to
download a small WAV or MP3 file failed with no
explanation. The help file refers to a requirement
to create the audio file using “ARecorder”
software and that it is “provided from the
company you purchased the camera”. Nothing
was found on the Norbain or Vista sites but a web
search suggested that ARecorder is part of
NCTitanium software supplied by Hitron in Korea.
Menu options
A relatively simple menu structure window is
provided with function headings on the left of the
screen with sub-options in the main window.
up to 25ips.
Stream 2 – MPEG only, resolution to 2MP (HD)
up to 15ips.
Stream 3 – H.264/265 resolution to 2MP (HD)
up to 25ips.
Stream 4 – H.264/265 all resolutions to 4MP
up to 8ips.
Performance
The 1/3” CMOS image sensor has a structure of
2688(H) x 1520 (V) pixels with a stated colour
sensitivity of 0.1Lux @F1.6 with monochrome at
0Lux due to the IR LEDs.
The 2.8 to 12mm motorised lens gives a
horizontal angle of view from 97° to 31°.
Oddly the lens adjustment is only accessible
from the “Live” view screen and not from the
Setup menu. The lens icon opens a small lens
control window that has slider bars and controls
for zoom and focus positions. The zoom slider
range is from 0 to 535 with increment and
decrement buttons for steps of 10 or 100 while the
focus slider range is from 0 to 745 with steps of 1
or 10 on its buttons. A Smart Focus and Calibrate
button provide a quick auto-focus function and recalibration
of positions respectively.
Wide Dynamic Range is not enabled by default
but gives good results without too much
reduction in overall contrast. WDR will have a
reducing impact on low-light sensitivity though.
Night time performance is good with the array
of 28 LEDs mounted around the lens easily
achieving the stated 25 metre range. By default,
the automatic aperture control is set from 1/10th
of a second to 1/10,000th. Dropping to 1/25th
second minimum reduces the sensitivity but still
gives very acceptable image quality.
Motion Detection is configured as up to 8
Include zones with a further 8 Exclude zones.
These zones are established and resized suing
mouse drag commands. Sensitivity and Day or
Day / Night settings can be entered. A histogram
function assists with motion sensitivity setting.
Additionally, a VCA option was available on the
camera although not referred to in the user
manual. This feature supports Tampering,
Intelligent Motion and Intrusion detection modes.
Bi-directional audio is supported but no
information is provided on signal levels. The
connectors are marked as MIC and SPK but the
output requires an active speaker or amplifier to
be used and the input appears to be line level. No
additional information is provided in the manual
or help pages.
Although intended for the Vista range of Viper
network recorders, ONVIF compatibility is
supported for use with third party recording
systems.
Conclusion
A well-featured external vandal resistant camera
with excellent resolution and good sensitivity.
Support documentation is of a good standard but
the variances noted and lack of some details
could mean calls to the helpline may be required.
Additional software performed reasonably well.
INTERVIEW
“Each market has its
own requirements and
expectations when it
comes to security and it
is true to say that the
UK is a unique one”
Meeting market requirements
We talk to Axelle Coulange,
consumer marketing director, EMEA
at Master Lock Europe about
developing products for the UK
Master Lock is a US company so how
does the UK business work?
Master Lock is an American company whose
head office for EMEA is based in Paris. The
English subsidiary based in Stansted feeds
information back to the EMEA marketing team,
allowing us the strength of a company trading
across Europe with the local knowledge and
understanding of the UK culture and markets.
We have a centralised warehouse in the north of
France which distributes out across Europe. We
have a large R&D department based in our
global head office in Milwaukee. We research
new product ideas and finding ways to make
everyday tasks more manageable. This is how
products such as our patented Twin Wire
Reverse Hook Bungees evolved.
Are there any differences in the US and
UK products and public/customer
requirements?
Each market has its own requirements
and expectations when it comes to
security and it is true to say that the
UK is a unique one. Indeed,
certification organisations, level of
security expected, type of materials,
preferred locking system and even
price acceptance will vary from one
market to another. A prime example
would be the locker system in schools.
In the US, each student will grow up with a right
left right combination padlock on their school
locker. US consumers are all used to that type of
locking mechanism while in Europe, a standard
user will really struggle to unlock the very same
padlock.
Are you seeing any trends in the UK
market?
Overall, we’re observing the same trend in
Europe. Consumers are looking for security
solutions that will offer peace of mind, ease of
access and flexibility of use with reliable
technology. We anticipated that trend a couple
of years ago to offer Bluetooth solutions. We’re
very glad to see that product adoption is
growing and we are always looking at all types
of to anticipate our consumer expectations for
tomorrow.
How important are accreditations and
certifications with safes/lockboxes etc?
Accreditations and certifications can be
important purchasing criteria in the buying
process of security products. Let’s take the
example of a key lock box. Because key lock
boxes are aimed to protect house keys,
consumers will be willing to invest more in an
accredited product (such as the PSI Premier
Award 2018 finalist 5426EURD which is Sold
Secure and Secured by Design approved) where
they trust that a premium price is a guarantee to
protect their home from theft.
How often do you find that customer
problems with units are down to
incorrect installation?
With resettable combination products, incorrect
installation can be a critical economic problem
for us but above all it creates consumer
unsatisfaction. We put a lot of effort into making
sure our security devices, instructions
and app are user friendly whilst not
jeopardising security. For all our latest
new products, we’re developing ‘how
to’ videos to explain clearly to our
consumers how our products can be
installed or set. We’re also currently
launching a key and combination
retrieval webshop. This new online
service will enable Master Lock
consumers to retrieve their safe
combination or keys in case of loss.
Modern access control systems utilise
NFC and other technologies so how long
do you think we will be using keys?
We have already observed a digitalisation of
access, but at the same time we are also
convinced that mechanical solutions still have
bright future and physical keys will be needed.
It’s down to personal choice, whether it’s
because there is a mistrust of technology or a
generational preference. For this reason, our
Bluetooth products offer both options. You can
use a physical numerical code or smart device,
the best of both worlds.
EDITOR’S CHOICE
Camera ranges simplify
installation on-site
Vista has announced additions to
its VK2 and HDA ranges with
new ‘universal’ brackets
which simplify installation.
The VK2 range is
designed to reduce
bandwidth and storage
requirements along with
minimising the time required
on-site installing and
adjusting the cameras. Their
ability to stream highly efficient
H.265 video format, combined with Vista’s “Hi-
Stream” bandwidth reducing function, means that
storage and bandwidth requirements can
reportedly be up to 75% lower than that of an
equivalent H.264 stream. The VK2 cameras are
available in 2MP and 4MP formats and utilise user
definable min/max shutter speed, True Wide
Dynamic Range and IR Illumination.
The VK2L range has been designed for those
who require a high quality video image at a cost
effective price.
The newly released HDA cameras are capable of
providing full HD 1080p resolution in TVI HDA
format over coax cabling. A range of features make
them suitable for many internal and external
applications. The HDA range suits transition from
analogue to IP and can be used in conjunction with
existing analogue infrastructure.
Outdoor perimeter cameras
for commercial businesses
The Flir Saros line of security cameras combines
multiple traditional perimeter protection
technologies into a unified solution
that delivers actionable alerts
and verified alarm data.
Saros includes
multiple Flir Lepton
thermal sensors, one
or more 1080p or 4K
camera, IR and visible
LED illuminators,
onboard analytics,
two-way audio, and
digital I/Os.
The Saros platform
was designed and
engineered with today’s
cybersecurity risks in
mind, with end-to-end
encryption for setup, web,
and video streams, and
configuration lockdown after initial
setup for increased tamper prevention. It also
eliminates the need for port-forwarding, so devices
are less exposed to remote security attacks.
Initial Flir Saros models, in both dome and multiimager
form factors, will begin shipping in North
America and Europe in the third quarter of 2018.
Software solution for SMTP
to HTTP conversion
Luminite Electronics has introduced new
software that takes SMTP alerts and convert
them to a configurable HTTP GET / POST
request.
The MHconverter software decodes
notification information such as an alarm type
or number and sends a pre-configured message
to a server or NVR. Messages to the server are
configurable by the user and can be tested in a
browser before committing to the integral
database in MHconverter. Any HTTP GET /
POST alert that can be tested in a browser can
be assigned to any alarm type or number.
This free software will allow users of
Genesis PIR detectors to send
alarm and tamper alerts to almost
any platform currently using HTTP
GET / POST requests.
www.luminite.co.uk
System to maintain video
surveillance integrity
Johnson Controls has introduced VideoEdge
TrickleStor, designed to maintain the integrity
of video data in a surveillance system in the
event of network connectivity loss.
TrickleStor provides an integrated camera
and network video recorder connectivity
solution between VideoEdge NVRs and Illustra
IP cameras. TrickleStor technology records
video locally on Illustra cameras in the event
of a connection failure, protecting against
video loss in the case of NVR updates or
network outage.
When connectivity to the VideoEdge NVR is
lost, video is recorded directly onto the
camera’s SD card at the same frame rate,
resolution and encoding. When connectivity is
reestablished, the protected recorded video is
automatically inserted into the media database
at the correct date and time. The missing video
is pulled from the camera to the NVR at an
ultra-low bitrate to minimise bandwidth
consumption caused by the video retrieval.
According to the company, there is no
discernible difference between
the trickled-back video and
previously recorded video when
the stream is reviewed later.
up to detect the presence or absence of 3D objects. It therefore offers an
entry-level option for protection both of stand-alone objects or exhibits,
and of large and complex wall-standing or mounted items such as furniture and statuary.
Tasks include detecting whether an installation has been damaged, moved, added to or
otherwise affected.
The sensor provides 3D image analysis with a simple yes/no, occupied or unoccupied,
signal depending on the configuration with a sensing area range of up to 50 by 45 metres
at 40 metres distance. A discrete output signal enables easy integration with an
automated security system. Direct communication capability can be set up to a visual
display, acoustic alarm or a PC, enabling activity recording for later appraisal of any
incidents.
The sensor can be configured using a PC, SOPAS software tool and GUI. 3D objects or
PSI PREMIER AWARDS
The PSI Premier Awards Dinner
This year’s Awards Dinner, following the annual
PSI Golf Day, will be held at Warren Weir at the
Luton Hoo Hotel, Golf & Spa in Bedfordshire on
12th July. Guest speaker for the event will be
former footballer Ray Parlour.
Ray Parlour spent 14
years at Highbury. He
made 468 appearances
in all, winning two FA Cups,
the League Cup, three
league titles and two FA
Cups (scoring against
Chelsea in 2002). He also
played in the Champions
League and earned 10 caps
for England.
Dubbed the 'Romford
Pele,' Ray broke into
George Graham's Arsenal
side and quickly built a
reputation as an
industrious player,
improving match by match.
When Arsene Wenger
arrived he flourished. With his
footballing brain, skill and tackling
ability he gave the midfield a
quality balance - playing alongside
the likes of Patrick Vieira and
Dennis Bergkamp.
Ray left on a high note shortly
after Wenger's 'Invincibles' had
completed an unbeaten title
campaign. He signed for
Middlesbrough, then Hull City, before moving swiftly into the
media. A natural communicator and storyteller, he hosts a show
on talkSPORT as well as contributing to other outlets both at
home and abroad.
Ray is a genuine and immensely likeable man, with a treasure
chest of tales to share. He's also an adept motivator, especially
on the subject of high performance teams.
The PSI Premier Awards Dinner is always an enjoyable
evening for those who are not only finalists but golfers from the
PSI Golf Day as well as guests. Fine dining in beautiful
surroundings with great company and industry recognition.
INTERVIEW
Meet the President, COO and CEO
This month we talk to Ronald
Virden, the COO at ACRE who is also
the President of ACRE International
and the new CEO of Vanderbilt. PSI
speaks to a very busy man...
ast month we reported that Ronald Virden,
Lwho was recently named ACRE COO, is to
assume the role of President of ACRE
International. The evolution of the company’s
leadership roles will allow ACRE to refocus its
efforts based on geographic regions, allowing
greater alignment between its Vanderbilt and
ComNet brands in the Americas, Europe, the
Middle East and APAC.
Ronald, who assumed his expanded role as
of June 1, 2018, will be based in Dublin, Ireland,
and take over the Vanderbilt CEO role from Joe
Grillo, who will continue to serve as ACRE CEO.
All of the management of Vanderbilt’s
international operations, as well as ComNet’s
UK-based operations, will fall under Ronald’s
purview and he will also remain COO of ACRE.
PSI caught up with Ronald to find out his
plans for the organisation and also to discuss
the US and UK market.
ACRE may not be a company that people
know, while they will be familiar with
Vanderbilt and ComNet. How would you
describe ACRE’s role in the security
industry?
While ACRE isn't a large conglomerate, the
company is still sizeable in that the Vanderbilt
and ComNet brands are truly global companies,
serving more than 15 countries. The two brands
also span not only the access control, integrated
solutions and intrusion markets, but also the
fibre optic, electrical and wireless solutions
markets as well. The size of our brands within
ACRE allows us to be influential in these areas
while remaining flexible in our ability to meet
customer expectations and deliver exceptional
service to our partners. This differentiation is
important as we look toward the future of the
business and prepare for more growth and is
what sets us apart in the industry.
Do you think you will have a different
approach to the role than Joe Grillo?
Joe remains the ACRE CEO through this next
evolution of the company, and my role will be to
offer additional support on the operations side
of the business so that Joe can concentrate on
the strategic vision for the company as we look
to add to our portfolio. My background is in
operations, so I bring additional insight into the
customer-centric perspective, including
satisfaction levels, metrics and operational
efficiencies, as well as ways we can gain
positive sales synergies between the two ACRE
brands. As we continue to refine our operations,
we've made strategic additions to the
leadership team, which will help propel the
brand forward and solidify our strength in the
marketplace.
How would you compare the US security
market to the one we have in the UK?
One of the biggest factors affecting the security
market in the UK and Europe is the GDPR and
the quest to protect data. Both ComNet and
Vanderbilt have been proactive in addressing
these concerns before the rule is (continued over)
Ronald Virden
“Allowing
organisations to
increase their
situational awareness
through AI, analytics,
surveillance and
access control will be
important to us
moving forward”
INTERVIEW
The widespread UK security
market became fully aware of
ACRE in 2015 when Vanderbilt
completed the acquisition of
Siemens Security Products
(continued from previous page)
enacted in late May, hiring a compliance officer
to perform an audit on our systems to ensure
the protections are in place for the personal
data being collected. Being proactive in this
approach will help us in the future when similar
rules emerge in the U.S. market. ACRE also
addressed the differences in the two geographic
regions with its recent leadership change that
elevated ComNet's Andrew Acquarulo to
President of ACRE Americas and added another
role for me as President of ACRE International.
The two markets require different strategies for
sales, support and operations, so we wanted to
reflect this in our leadership trajectory.
In both markets, the cloud and mobile-centric
applications are becoming core to the services
we provide as more and more partners and
customers move toward increased connectivity.
We're poised in this regard to move into a
market leader when it comes to embracing the
next generation of access control and
networked solutions.
How do you plan to grow Vanderbilt and
ComNet going forward?
As I mentioned, my background is in operations
and I'm focused on approaching the business
from a customer-back perspective, learning how
we can continue to serve our customers while
aligning our sales strategies across both
brands. There are many natural synergies that
exist between Vanderbilt and ComNet and there
are numerous ways we can harness them to
continue growth in a number of sectors. ComNet
also has sales reach in areas where Vanderbilt
may not have support and vice versa, creating
opportunities for us to deliver our solutions to
an expanded market quickly.
There are people who believe that the
future of security will centre on AI,
analytics, surveillance and access
control. Do you agree?
Absolutely. The industry is being driven by
emerging technologies that are both intelligent
and integrated, and these four areas easily
address these qualities. Just as we hope to
improve efficiencies in our own operations, we
aim to help our customers do the same by
harnessing the latest technological
developments to ensure that as our customers
evolve, so too do our offerings. Allowing
organisations to increase their situational
awareness through AI, analytics, surveillance
and access control will be important to us
moving forward.
“ACRE is in a good position to
invest in the next evolution of the
business, but it has to make sense
from a strategic perspective”
Do you have any plans for adding
security companies to the portfolio?
What is it that makes an attractive
business proposition?
ACRE is in a good position to invest in the next
evolution of the business, but it has to make
sense from a strategic perspective. Late last
year, we divested Mercury Security, which was a
solid business, but created some conflict with
our other brands in the way that the products
were sold to the customer through the channel.
Since doing so, it's positioned us well by
strengthening our balance sheet and putting us
in a stronger financial position to go out and
execute other acquisitions. Along those lines,
it's important for us to identify companies with
similar distribution strategies so we can avoid
the natural channel conflict that existed when
Mercury was a part of our portfolio.
Has anyone told you what the weather
will be like in Dublin?
I have been “warned” by my new work
colleagues on what to expect. The good thing is
that the weather is very similar to Salem, Ore.,
USA, where I have maintained a home for the
past 17 years. Although, I grew up in the
Phoenix, Ariz., USA, desert, I have acclimated to
the rain and am confident I will adjust. I am used
to not seeing the sun for months at a time! I am
excited to be in Dublin and am enjoying working
with the terrific team.
PANEL
The cost of a low price
There is much more to making the
right buying decision than just
looking at price, so how should
installers convey to customers that
looking solely at the price of
technology at the tendering stage
is not the way to get the best
results in the long term?
We all do it when we look at a potential
new purchase, we consider the cost as
one of the most important, if not THE
most important factors before signing on the
dotted line. However when it comes to
technology this way of thinking doesn’t always
bear fruit. Yes there are always cheaper options,
but are they cheap for a reason or are they
genuinely on a par with the more expensive
choice? Sometimes the quality difference
between the options are not what the extra
money is for, it could be the brand name or
reputation that adds to the cost rather than the
quality. Unfortunately, as installers, you will
have plenty of customers that put cost front and
centre so how can you get the message across
that cheap does not always mean cheerful, or
even that expensive does not guarantee ROI?
Kim Loy – Vanderbilt
The old saying of "you get
what you pay for" generally
rings true, and this is also
accurate when it comes to
security systems. Security
systems are installed to
protect people and assets and
should not be considered on price alone. A
security system and the manufacturer of those
systems should be considered based on
reputation, reliability, and longevity in the
marketplace – you want a stable system and a
supplier that will be there for the customer in
the future. Consideration should be given to the
TCO (total cost of ownership) over the expected
lifetime of the system. If a cheap system is
installed and saves money upfront but then
requires continual maintenance or upgrades, it
will ultimately be more expensive than a solid
investment in a better technology for the
customer in the long run.
www.psimagazine.co.uk
Daniel Wan –
Honeywell Security
Firstly, installers should work
with customers to understand
their requirements. They
should define their security
needs, potential risks or
threats they want to minimise,
and how a solution can make operations more
efficient. This would include undertaking a risk
assessment to highlight and prioritise threats to
their business. Security shouldn’t be purchased
reluctantly to ease minds. It should be
presented as a value-add to the company to
ensure support from senior leadership.
Additionally, installers should help end users
specify the most suitable solutions to meet their
requirements. Installers should use their
expertise to guide end users in identifying
solutions that address the security threats, are
scalable, and future-proof. Alongside this,
installers should promote the benefits of
integrated security solutions in relation to
operational efficiency, increased protection, and
reduction in training and maintenance costs. It’s
also beneficial for customers if they can
experience reference sites or case
(continued over)
PANEL
“We’re asking for the
industry to take a look
at the total cost of
ownership and look
past the price of the
box”
(from previous page)
studies which mirror their requirements.
While cost shouldn’t be the sole deciding
factor, it is important. Both the total cost of
ownership and initial capital outlay should be
considered. End users should be educated on
the potential higher long term costs of installing
lower cost (and often lower quality) equipment.
One possible solution is cloud-based
technology, which can provide efficient security
management, especially across multiple sites,
in return for a recurring charge.
End users can expect a number of immediate
benefits, but should think beyond the initial
security plus points. For example, more
advanced systems can provide business
insights, whether it be reporting on events or
monitoring of activity within a defined area. The
data collected has the potential to enhance
businesses and productivity, alongside
improving security. This again has the effect of
gaining support from stakeholders outside of
the security department, ensuring the chosen
technology is seen as a sound investment that
adds value to the whole organisation.
Karen Sangha –
Panasonic Security
For security systems it used to
be the case that the two
serious buying considerations
any Procurement team would
have were, the cost of CCTV
cameras and recorders and the
quality of the product. Regardless of the ratio
applied, it was a simple calculation that, in the
past, enabled a robust purchasing decision.
However, the advent of 4K, the rise of
maintenance-busting product features and the
untapped added value that security can bring
for marketing have radically changed the
procurement landscape.
We are asking end users to take a more
holistic approach to appraise any potential
security system. This involves different
calculations as to the total cost of ownership,
including a thorough appraisal of the ongoing
maintenance costs, the potential risk of non
cyber-secure systems as well as the financial
benefits ancillary features bring.
One consideration must be data. A good
supplier should be tailoring the customers’
needs to the right solution and advising
properly of the additional network requirements
and costs. By adopting the latest H.265
compression with the addition of smart coding
technology, network costs are decreased by up
to 75%.
Of course, image quality is another important
consideration, but this needs to look beyond
just resolution. How many times will you be
unable to use your footage due to the weather?
What provision does the camera have for rain,
fog or snow?
We’re asking for the industry to take a look at
the total cost of ownership and look past the
price of the box.
40
Clym Brown – Texecom
We all know that residential
users don’t always appreciate
the benefits of a
professionally installed and
maintained security system.
This means that buying
decisions are often based on
price rather than system performance. The
proliferation of DIY alarm kits or ‘cheap’ fitted
systems (and their associated false alarms)
exacerbates this problem.
The hard truth is that, for many domestic end
users, an intruder alarm system is often seen as
a ‘grudge purchase’. So, as an installer, how can
you convince potential customers to look
beyond price?
The good news is that there’s a growing
number of householders now looking to invest
in intelligent devices for their homes – and they
want to add security and protection to the
package.
While the smart home sector includes some
non-security vendors offering basic cloud-based
alarm systems, most domestic end users don’t
want these. What they want is to take control of
the system – to effectively own it and make their
own choices as what features it has and how it’s
used.
Some of the latest security systems now
provide a completely immersive experience,
allowing customers to take full control of the
system. Offering peripherals such as cameras,
perimeter security, safety devices and aesthetic
upgrades like metal keypads – as well as
lighting, heating, power management and smart
control of household appliances – these
“Whether it’s automation, cameras, perimeter security,
safety devices and aesthetic upgrades, you can now up-sell
and offer security systems that don’t feel like a grudge
purchase”
systems go well beyond what was once
considered a traditional ‘security installation’.
At the same time, the core graded element of
the systems continues to offer police firstresponse
or a credible bells-only solution at a
professional standard. A win-win situation.
So, whether it’s automation, cameras,
perimeter security, safety devices and aesthetic
upgrades, you can now up-sell and offer security
systems that don’t feel like a grudge purchase
but instead add real value – to your customers
and to your bottom line.
Gary Harmer –
Hikvision
End users should consider
their needs for both the short
– and longer term to
determine an Operational
Requirement (OR) when
considering the purchase of
Video Surveillance. If budget is a key
consideration now, it is false economy to
purchase technology now that cannot
accommodate a future requirement that may
only be viable when further budget becomes
available. Selecting product that offers an
upgrade path for latest technologies to be
utilised in the future provides a higher return on
investment in the longer term.
together raising standards
Meet the installer
Do you use a distributor or buy direct?
We maintain longstanding partnerships with a
number of key distributors and also trade directly
with key manufactures to ensure we have a robust
and stress tested supply chain in place to meet
the requirements of our customers.
Is third party accreditation beneficial to
your company?
Absolutely! Third party accreditations such as NSI
Gold and BAFE have proven to be invaluable for
us. Externally these certifications provide us with
a badge to demonstrate to our customers that we
have the proven ability to deliver what we say we
can. Internally, they provide a benchmark to
measure ourselves against and exceed.
One of the key initiatives the business has
delivered over the past 2 years is our Culture of
Compliance strategy. All Team Members,
including all our nationwide engineers, have been
provided training and are fully aware of their
responsibilities as an individual and our
responsibilities as a business in the delivery of
our services. The initiative has ensured that all
Team Members understand that we work in
security and fire LIFE safety. What we do is
important and our actions, or failure, can have
serious consequences. Our continued third party
accreditation is an excellent barometer of the
success of this initiative.
What would be a typical project for you?
This is a very difficult question to answer.
Operating nationally, across all industries, we
provide a complete range of security and active
fire protection solutions. While we provide an
integrated CCTV, access control and monitored
intruder alarm system to a leading
pharmaceutical company’s distribution centre we
are also supporting a Housing Association with
the retro fit of domestic sprinkler systems to their
high rise accommodation. While we maintain and
proactively monitor the security and fire systems
of the UK’s largest retailer we also protect and
monitor Mr and Mrs Smith’s semi-detached house
in Preston and service the fire extinguishers at the
independent accountancy practice across the
road. All our customers are important to us and we
recognise that every project is unique.
What would make your job easier?
A few more hours in the day would be nice but I
have a great team around me who absorb much of
the day to day pressure which allows me time to
consider customer development and innovation.
Is there is a security skills shortage?
With the demand for talented and qualified
security and fire engineers increasing year on
year we all need to plan for our future to ensure
that we have the resources in place to fulfil
demand for years to come. What we do is required
and the need isn’t going to go away. To proactively
address this we have invested heavily in our
Improver Engineer programme and are currently
researching various Apprenticeship Schemes and
Ex-Military Service Schemes.
What is the industry’s biggest myth?
That installing an unmonitored intruder alarm
system is sufficient to fully protect your property
from crime. While in many cases, the sight of a
professionally installed, active bell box will be
enough to deter criminal activity what about when
it doesn’t? The value of an alarm system is
measured only by what occurs in the event of
activation. If your neighbour or a member of the
public were to hear the intruder alarm sound at
your home do you know how they would react?
That they would call you or the police?
A monitored alarm system ensures a fast and
appropriate response, significantly reducing the
risk of burglary, intrusion and endangerment.
Operating 24/7, our in-house Alarm & Video
Receive Centre continually monitors thousands of
premises and reacts in the event of activation
contacting the Emergency Services or nominated
keyholders, actively protecting our customer’s
properties. In many circumstances we can quickly
identify false alarms or genuine intrusion from
visual verification through installed CCTV
systems. This is why we always recommend that
an alarm monitoring service be taken out with any
new alarm installation or takeover.
Will England ever win the football World
Cup again?
At risk of being a doomsayer, no, I’m afraid not.
Like it or not, England actually perform better
than we should in these competitions based on
the size of our country, budget and population.
Unfortunately, as other countries develop further
we will only drop further down the performance
stats.For once, I hope I’m proved wrong.
What would you do if you won £25,000?
Personally I would invest in shares of Marlowe
plc and I would give a big donation to our team of
20 who are walking up Mount Snowdon on the
16th of June in aid of Charity Partner, Cancer
IFSEC 2018
IFSEC shows you how…
This year, IFSEC International
features a new programme called
Show Me How aimed squarely at
installers. Here we take a look at the
components of the campaign
The IFSEC International security seminar and
conference programme has been re-vamped for
2018 with the launch of a new Keynote Arena in
the centre of the event. Of special interest to
installers will be the new Show Me How programme
giving a deeper look at the latest security
technology in terms of installation and maintenance.
To define the content of the Show Me How
programme, the IFSEC organisers UBM asked
hundreds of security professionals what they
wanted to see at the event and also to state what
security concerns keep them up at night. The key
responses were:
• “Show me how to install the kit – what does it
do? How does it help?”
• “Show me the vendors I can trust.”
• “Show me the future, I’m developing
strategies into 2025.”
• “Show me how my business can move into
different areas, introduce me to new revenue
streams.”
• “I know what the tech is, show me what it can
do.”
• “Show me the possibilities and the capabilities.”
• “Show me how to take advantage of emerging
opportunities.”
IFSEC 2018 has been built around these
requests with a three-day Show Me How agenda
with sessions handpicked for the level of
technical detail and real life know-how they'll
provide. Show Me How also extends to other
attractions such Speaker’s Corner where solution
providers showcase their products in 15-minute
time slots, then take questions on their
innovations in 10 minute Q&A sessions.
The Show Me How programme encompasses
more than just the seminar and conference
programme, but encompasses everything at the
show, with hand selected Show Me How
exhibitors, technical stand personnel, and
product demonstrations. Here we list some of the
other attractions in the programme:
The Future of Security Seminar
Theatre
In partnership with Tavcom Training, The Future of
Security Seminar Theatre, sponsored by
Panasonic UK, will deliver a range of CPD
accredited presentations on the latest in security
technology design and integration.
Physical security systems are now heavily
dependent on IT-based platforms and this
intersection of technologies has opened up
significant potential for security installers and
engineers to offer even better solutions for their
customers. To reflect this demand, The Future Of
Security Theatre will focus on these opportunities
offering a full set of free seminars, designed with
installers in mind. The sessions will target key
areas addressing cyber security, IT best practice,
practical IP networking, integration and system
design plus a wide range of additional core areas.
Delivering insight into the major security
challenges, the cyber security sections will look
into how robust approaches to cyber security can
strengthen an existing physical security system,
providing the end user with even greater
resilience to cyber threats. From an IT security
aspect, the sessions will include understanding
firewalls and identifying vulnerabilities which can
be inherent in the installation process. In
addition, there will be sessions on the use of
UAVs and drones in security and how this
technology is both a benefit and a hazard.
With cybercrime being an ever present threat,
Panasonic Business will focus on how integrators
and installers can bring additional value to end
users by providing cyber safe environments.
To define the content of the Show Me How programme,
the IFSEC organisers UBM asked hundreds of security
professionals what they wanted to see
The Converged Security Centre
In the modern world of converged security
networks and information software, IFSEC is
introducing The Converged Security Centre in
2018 brought by Vidsys.
Networked systems and applied technologies
are presenting security management
professionals with rising levels of information
outputs and data, which are rapidly becoming
core aspects of their business strategies.
The business intelligence available from this
deepening level of integration is now a core
competency, providing commercial, industrial and
government users with unparalleled levels of
insight. These systems also represent major
security vulnerabilities as the nature of their
networked capabilities means there is a
strengthening need for higher levels of
understanding and vigilance in combating threats
to information security.
It’s a simple equation - greater complexity of
technologies will lead to greater threats and this
is where IFSEC, Vidsys and their partners address
the solutions.
The Converged Security Centre will be a
combined learning and demonstration area
demonstrating a range of simulations and case
Following its launch at IFSEC 2017, the Attack Zone will be back larger and more prominent for
2018, showcasing real-life attack tests on physical and perimeter security products
studies showing where converged security and
information management (CSIM) adds strategic
value and major ROI efficiencies in the
management of major assets. Installers will also
have access to a series of panel discussions with
information and physical security professionals
on the capabilities of a fully integrated CSIM
platform.
The presentations will show the simulated
outputs of CSIM across a range of applications
including transport, utilities and infrastructure
and discuss how these benefit all areas of
security management. Visitors will be able to see
how CSIM operates in real time and discover how
this will empower future security strategies.
The Attack Testing Zone
Following its launch at IFSEC 2017, the Attack
Zone will be back larger and more prominent for
2018, showcasing real-life attack tests on physical
and perimeter security products.
The BRE Global/LPCB Attack Testing Zone
will host technicians from the LPCB
demonstrating the testing they execute on
perimeter fencing, security doors, shutters and
covers. Non-approved products will be tested in
the demonstrations against LPCB approved
alternatives which have reached a minimum of
LPS 1175 SR-3 levels of compliance so visitors
will be able to see the effectiveness of these
industry-defining products. Following the live
attack demonstrations, installers will be able to
speak directly to the manufacturers of the
tested products.
Gerry Dunphy, Brand Director for IFSEC states:
‘’We’ve been through an extensive research
programme over the past twelve months, which
has provided IFSEC with a clear set of directions,
matching the direct needs of our customers.
They’ve told us they have a need to understand
the future, they need guidance on areas such as
how cyber security impacts on physical systems
and they need to hear from specialists they can
trust. Our customers have told us what’s keeping
them awake at night and it’s IFSEC’s duty to help
them rest more comfortably!’’
Look out for Show Me How
badges
Wherever installers see a designated technician
or enabler wearing a Show Me How badge at
IFSEC 2018, they can expect a detailed
explanation – not a sales pitch – of their
product, so that they can gain a deeper
understanding of the workings behind it, from
how to install the technology , how to maintain
it and what it can deliver.
INNOVATION ON SHOW
This year IFSEC International is being held at London ExCeL from 19th to
21st June. Here we look at a selection of some of the new products and
services being showcased
IFSEC is evolving and is designed to deliver the
message that security is critical in today’s
society. Security professionals around the
world are asking to be shown their way around the
future of integrated security, and IFSEC 2018 has
been built around this request. Following
extensive research, IFSEC’s focus is expanding to
encompass the growing convergence between
physical and cyber security.
For 2018 there will be a number of new
attractions in addition to the seminars and
training theatres. Plus this year there is the new
‘Show Me How’ programme aimed squarely at
installers, providing all of the information and
content that research with engineers has brought
to the fore.
In response to the pleas of the global security
industry, IFSEC 2018 will show installers how to fit
the latest kit, what it does and what it takes to
maintain it. IFSEC will show the future, and it will
show installers how to take advantage of
emerging opportunities and the vendors to trust.
With more than 600 exhibitors showcasing over
10,000 products there is no way we could feature
everyone and list all of the new product launches
that will be announced during the three days, so
we have focused on a select few companies that
should be on your ‘ones to visit’ list while you
make your way around the show.
Keep an eye out for the PSI team while you are
there too - you’ll find us on stand D200 so please
pop along and say hello!
At IFSEC 2018, Honeywell will be
demonstrating its MAXPRO Cloud
platform – the integrated security
offering designed specifically for
small-to-medium-sized (SMB)
businesses
MAXPRO Cloud is a flexible and scalable
platform which enables customers to
achieve more efficient safety and security,
reduces IT infrastructure costs, and streamlines
operations by empowering small-to-medium
business owners to efficiently operate and access
data from their access, intrusion and video
systems. For example, a business with multiple
sites can use MAXPRO Cloud to make decisions on
access control remotely from a smartphone,
instead of having to spend time accessing a
desktop computer at one particular location. In
addition, because the system is cloud-hosted
there is no additional server or software to buy
and manage.
MAXPRO Cloud gives installers the opportunity
to create new recurring monthly revenue from
cloud hosted systems, while providing an
integrated security platform with lower
installation and service costs.
With remote access management, SMBs no
Raise your marketing game
PSI’s resident business expert Jim
Rathbone reveals the seven
foundations of effective marketing
aving worked and spoken over the last
Hseven years with many fire and security
installers, I have come to realise that very
few see marketing as a strength in their
company. In fact, many recognise it as a major
weakness that stops them from achieving the
true potential of their business.
In some ways this is not surprising. Many fire
and security installer business owners have
technical rather than sales and marketing
backgrounds. By contrast, world class
companies such as Amazon, Apple and Google
don’t only have great technical strengths
together with distinctive products and services;
they also excel at marketing. Think of how
brilliant Steve Jobs was at marketing.
If you wish to accelerate the growth of your
business, you may well have to improve your
sales process and selling skills, as well as the
experience your customers have of buying from
you. It is however likely that you will also need
to raise your marketing game. What do you
need to do to achieve this?
In my view, there are seven foundations
which determine the success of your marketing
activities. Put them into place and you will go a
long way towards securing the success and
growth of your business. Ignore them and you
will struggle.
The seven foundations are:
position yourself against the competition in a
way that makes you stand-out from the crowd. A
unique selling proposition (USP) is simply a
description of your products, services and
company which compels your prospects and
customers to buy from you and not your
competitors.
Give evidence for what you
deliver
Positive testimonials about your products and
services, given by satisfied customers, are one
of the most powerful tools known in marketing.
Testimonials "prove" that your products and
services are as good as you say they are. It
shows potential buyers that others have already
tried and tested your products or services, and
found them good enough to recommend.
Providing case studies relevant to your target
market also adds to your credibility and gives
prospects and customers confidence to buy
from you.
Communicate the benefits
It is vital in all your sales and marketing to
communicate the benefits of what you offer. In
reality, people don't buy your products or
services or what you do for them (features).
(continued over)
“If you wish to
accelerate the growth
of your business, you
may well have to
improve your sales
process and selling
skills, as well as the
experience your
customers have of
buying from you”
Choose your target markets
carefully
Choosing your target market is one of the most
important business decisions you'll ever make.
Which markets will you focus your marketing
efforts and resources on? It makes sense as part
of this to define what your best and most
profitable clients have in common and then
develop your sales and marketing programs to
find more customers with that ideal profile.
Define and communicate what
makes you distinctive
If you want customers to choose you, you must
“Beware of stopping
potentially successful
campaigns by taking a
short term view that
fails to include
revenues that come
from repeat business
after the initial sale”
They buy the results that your products or
services bring to them (benefits). In a recent
field visit with a salesperson , that sales
person’s whole focus was on the technical
features of the intruder alarm system and the
system design that the company was offering.
The salesperson completely forgot to mention
the enormous benefit that they could deliver,
the very thing the prospect was looking for -
protection of their £7m stock in their new state
of the art national distribution centre.
Test and measure your
marketing activities
One of the biggest reasons for failed marketing
is simply a failure to consistently test and
measure the results of all lead generation
methods. Marketing doesn't need to only be an
art - it must also be a science. You can enhance
the effectiveness of your marketing spend by
simply doing more of what works and refining or
stopping what doesn’t work. Of course, this is
only possible if you track the source of leads,
and the sales which result from those leads, to
know your return from specific marketing
activities and investments.
Recognise the lifetime value
of customers
Understanding the importance of the lifetime
value of customers can have a radical impact on
the way you view your marketing spend. Most
businesses only assess the effectiveness of their
marketing activities by measuring the immediate
sales or gross profit that result from individual
campaigns. Beware of stopping potentially
successful campaigns by taking a short term
view that fails to include revenues that come
from repeat business after the initial sale.
Generate leads using multiple
methods
Many owner managed businesses use only one
or two marketing methods to reach new
customers. For most, this is word-of-mouth or
direct sales.
The most dangerous number is one - one key
customer, one key employee, one lead
generation method.
If your business is doing OK with only one
marketing method, just imagine what you could
achieve if you had three, five or seven proven
lead generation methods!
With only one lead generation method, you
also expose yourself to significant risk. What
happens if you rely mainly on one salesperson
and that person leaves, or if you rely principally
on website leads and Google change their
algorithm?
A well-known and respected marketer, Jay
Abraham, explains this by using the analogy of
the Parthenon in Athens. Think of the roof as
total sales leads or revenue and the pillars as
lead generation methods. If you only have one
lead generation method, the roof is not only
unstable but positively tottering. Better to have
multiple methods –more pillars to hold the roof
up. By developing multiple methods of
generating sales leads, you put yourself on a
firmer foundation for greater success and
security.
There are many ways to generate sales leads.
Here are a select few:
1. Google AdWords
2. Relationships with intermediaries such as
building or M and E contractors or
consultants
3. Referrals
4. Personal introductions
5. Email marketing
6. Social media activities
7. Telemarketing
8. Direct mail
9. Networking at, for example, technology
update events and exhibitions
10.Public relations such as editorials
11. Advertising
12.Exhibiting and giving seminars at industry
conferences and events
How many of these methods are you using?
How many have you tested in the past? And if
you tested them, are you sure you followed best
practice in implementing them?
Why not evaluate how good your business is
at marketing by scoring yourself out of ten on
each of the seven key foundations covered
above?
Commit yourself to making marketing a
strength of your company and you will
accelerate the sustainable growth of your
business.
Axis unveils comprehensive range of
IR-enabled cameras at ISC West
Infrared (IR) illumination provides a highly-effective enhancement for video
surveillance in complete darkness. At ISC West in Las Vegas recently, Axis
Communications unveiled several new network cameras featuring its IR functionality, including
pan, tilt and zoom (PTZ) and fixed dome cameras, bullet, fisheye and panoramic cameras, and
discreet sensors units. Together, these bring IR capability to almost any surveillance
environment and answer an increased market demand.
IR’s ability to allow cameras to literally ‘see in the dark’ is an obvious additional benefit to
video surveillance for a number of reasons, from allowing 24/7 surveillance without the need for
additional lighting, to enabling ultra-discreet surveillance in sensitive locations. By launching
several new cameras which feature built-in IR illumination, Axis delivers the benefits of IR in the
most cost-efficient, easily installed way to almost any indoor or external surveillance need. In addition, Axis OptimizedIR
technology, featured in some of the new models, is the company’s own smart, power-efficient and patented IR LED technology. It
optimally uses the light to enable an even illumination over the complete camera view.
The new camera models are now available through Axis distribution channels.
Issues and resolutions for access control
vulnerability
90% of all access control cards in the industry today are easily copied and
cloned. Copied credentials, fake credentials and card cloners can easily be ordered
on the internet. This has created the growing realization that most access control ID systems are
therefore totally open to being compromised and seriously vulnerable to attack.
An employer using older techniques can no longer rely on the transactions on an audit report being accepted as proof of
where someone went as people can simply claim it was not them, and their card must have been copied.
Even when you used biometric devices there are hacking tools out there that make these systems equally at risk of attack
unless proper actions are taken.
Many corporate compliance rules can easily be broken by employees modifying their passes to a different number to perform
an illegal event. For example: the banking rules on compulsory holidays, secure document printing, computer login, ensuring
people do not discuss financial deals during transactions, ensuring people can only use equipment if they are authorized etc.
Whether you are using prox cards, older or new smart cards, biometrics or a mobile form of credential, we recommend that
you quickly perform a penetration review of your system. This will identify if your credentials can
be cloned or copied and that your whether you readers/communications can be tampered with
allowing them to be bypassed by a sniffing attack.
Integriti improves security and access
control for Stockport College
As an existing Inner Range customer and user of its legacy systems
(Concept and Insight), Stockport College was keen to upgrade to
Integriti and benefit from improved access control, security and building automation
capabilities. The college is a busy site with huge numbers of people entering and exiting
the campus all day. It also houses high value assets like IT equipment, as well as
confidential information such as student data and examination papers.
To maintain stringent security levels, Stockport College System Electrician Tim Banham recognised that it was essential for
him and the rest of the facilities & security team to introduce a more comprehensive security system to conveniently manage
student, staff and visitor entry and exit, whilst also reducing the risk of intruders, theft and even terror attacks.
With Integriti, the college can leverage the system’s compatibility with cluster serving architecture, auto-discovery of door
controllers and devices, as well as integrated Ethernet, to provide remote management and uploads via a smartphone. Another
key feature is that it has been designed around system-centric programming. The process of
user setup has been simplified to a ‘Who? What? Why?’ approach, a language used to
describe permissions, rather than system-speak. This simple change revolutionises
permissions setups.
Trusted Platform Module explained in new
white paper
As security systems have transitioned into network devices over the last
few decades, system vulnerabilities have transitioned as well. This shift in
network utilisation brings with it far more vulnerabilities than compared to older analogue
systems, and due to the very nature of networking the outer boundary of the surveillance
system can be vulnerable to attack.
The ‘arteries’ of an IP system, the physical network connections, need to reach the edge components, namely the cameras,
which are often mounted in exposed locations. Thus, these arteries and edge components need intensified protection.
For years, Bosch IP cameras, encoders and selected storage systems come with an onboard security chip – actually a systemon-a-chip
which is called Trusted Platform Module (TPM) – that provides functionality similar to crypto smart cards everyone
knows from daily life, like credit or debit cards. Such a Trusted Platform Module secures authenticity and acts like a safe for
critical data, protecting certificates, keys, licenses, etc. against unauthorised access even when the device is physically opened
to gain access.
A Trusted Platform Module is a self-contained system that acts like a cryptographic coprocessor to the camera system,
connected to it via a serial interface. IIt runs its own firmware which is continuously maintained to
provide optimal protection against possible threats known from the market. Its firmware is only
loaded in a secure production environment, not remotely like firmware for cameras.
Why have exterior perimeter protection?
Perimeter protection provides the peace of mind of knowing your
security system will detect an intruder even before they have
access to your home. It turns intruder detection into intrusion prevention.
External detection is a lot more challenging than conventional intruder systems,
however. How stable and reliable will it be? How will it cope with animals or strong
winds? How many false alarms will you get? These are all valid questions.
In the past, some manufacturers have simply taken an intruder detector and adapted it for outdoor use. This is simply wrong;
these systems inevitably result in too many false alarms. A perimeter detector needs to be purpose-built and fit for the job.
Texecom’s two main outdoor security motion sensors are the Premier External TD (wired) and Premier External TD-W
(wireless). Utilising two non-overlapping PIR sensors with superior mirrored optics, the Premier External TD is designed to
perform in the harshest outdoor environments and is more than a match for anything the British outdoors can throw at us,
whether it’s foxes, wind or rain.
Featuring Texecom’s unique Ricochet mesh technology, the Premier External TD-W offers superior wireless connectivity,
allowing system designers complete freedom of positioning. Upgrades are also quick and easy. It also features two nonoverlapping
PIR sensors with superior mirrored optics for outstanding false alarm immunity. It is the
perfect front-line wireless defence for any home. For more visit: www.texe.com/uk
Outdoor storage
showroom
investment is
secured
Amthal has worked with
Alfresco Living to design and
install fire and security
solutions for its new
showroom and present
protection for staff, visitors
and products in storage.
Alfresco Living specialises
in the supply and installation
of outdoor products for
homeowners to maximise
usage of their garden,
terrace or patio space.
Making a significant
investment in a new
showroom, Alfresco Living
decided upon Amthal as its
fire and security partner of
choice, working in
partnership to create a
bespoke solution without
impacting on the style and
feel of the new facility’s design.
Adam Rayner, Director at Alfresco Living
commented: “The new showroom is the ideal
place to present product examples from our
high-end product range. We wanted to create an
open and welcoming environment, but at the
same time we were very conscious to ensure the
right security was in place to protect against risk
of vandalism or theft.
Personal protection technology
for global ventures
CriticalArc has been appointed by FCC Group (FCC)
to help develop and implement SafeZone as a
multinational safeguarding solution for all its
employees and any accompanying family
members while they are working overseas on
company projects.
CriticalArc’s SafeZone personal protection and
emergency response system is already being used
by FCC as part of their initial deployment phase in
three different security challenges: for the FAST
consortium to design and build the Riyadh Metro
in Saudi Arabia, for all FCC projects in Egypt, and
on a gas pipeline construction project in North
Mexico. Based on these experiences FCC then
plans to integrate SafeZone more widely and to
start rolling out the approach from mid-2018 to
cover all its international operations in over 35
countries.
“FCC believes that SafeZone is the ideal tool to
help us provide an even higher level of emergency
support and assistance to all employees and their
families across all our international operations.
The tool will give everyone peace of mind when
they are travelling between different work
locations or exploring the country in their free
time, plus it gives FCC a reliable method for
instant mass communication, for example, to
broadcast regional alerts, weather warnings or
travel updates,” said José Morales, corporate
security director at FCC Group.
One of the key challenges for expatriates and
their families is having to deal with the cultural
differences, language barriers or growing political
tensions that in some regions can lead to even
minor incidents quickly escalating out
of control. For example: if someone is
involved in a road traffic accident or
stopped for questioning by the police.
SafeZone gives users the ability to
call for immediate emergency
assistance by pressing a button on
their mobile phone. They do not need
to say anything, and their phone
automatically sends an alert with their
exact location details to a centralised
control room.
“SafeZone is already used by
universities and other further
education establishments where the
prime objective is to help protect
students and staff both on and off
campus. However, with FCC this is the
first time SafeZone has been specified
by a global security team for
implementation across multiple
geographies and such a diverse range
of operational models. FCC’s
expatriates and their families are much
more widely dispersed, and in some
regions the company’s security assets
are not directly under its own control,”
said Darren Chalmers-Stevens,
CriticalArc EMEA managing director.
CCTV and intercom system
reduces anti-social behaviour
Stanley Security has installed new CCTV and
intercom systems at a number of residential blocks
for property management company Griffin Grays.
The result has been a reduction in anti-social
behaviour and a more efficient way of working.
Griffin Grays is an estate and property
management company based in Grays, Essex.
The latest addition to its range of services,
Griffin Block Management is a managing agent
service specifically for residential blocks in the
Thurrock area.
To provide customers with an effective and
value for money service, Griffin Grays was keen to
investigate latest cost-effective security options,
including an alternate supplier to its intercom
systems. Pam Honeywell, Property Manager for
Griffin Grays, explains: “The intercoms we had on
most sites were installed with long term contracts
that did not include any maintenance, so as well
as paying for the rental of the intercom system we
had to pay separately for repairs. This system had
been the same since the buildings were built, so
the blocks were effectively paying a large fee for a
very old system.”
Stanley Security has installed new audio
intercom systems, featuring vandal proof panels
on entrances and new handsets in apartments. It
worked with Griffin Grays to gain access to
apartments with minimal inconvenience or
disruption to residents.
In addition to replacing the intercoms, Stanley
Security has also helped Griffin Grays tackle an
issue all too common to blocks of flats: fly tipping.
“Most sites have bin stores that are close to the
roads which encourages non-residents to fly tip
large items,” states Pam. Stanley Security has
installed small IP networked CCTV systems in
these properties, consisting of four external
cameras and some internal where required. These
are recorded to on site hard drives, although
discussions are afoot to move to remote
monitoring. The CCTV has had an immediate
positive impact: “To date the fly tipping has
reduced as the cameras are highly visible. In
addition to this, when residents are dumping
items, we are able to evidence this and charge
them direct for removal, therefore reducing the
overall costs of refuse removal.
“Some areas have been affected badly by
antisocial behaviour; having the CCTV now gives
us evidence to the perpetrators so that the police
can deal with them appropriately.”
Work was completed at eight sites to date with
a further three underway. Each are under a tenyear
contract which includes full service.
New town centre CCTV system
for Keswick Town Council
Chubb Fire & Security is helping the Town
Council in Keswick to combat crime and reduce
anti-social behaviour in the town centre with the
installation of a new high-definition CCTV
system at The Moot Hall.
The Moot Hall, originally built in 1571, is a
Grade II-listed building located at the southern
end of the main street in Keswick town centre. It
was identified by the council as the best location
for a new CCTV system due to the number of
crimes in Keswick tied to the market square.
Lynda Walker, Town Clerk at Keswick Town
Council, said: “It was clear to the council that
the lack of CCTV was causing problems for
Keswick police, so we hope that this new system
will provide them with greater assistance.”
Chubb has installed four high-definition CCTV
cameras, positioning one camera on each of the
corners of the building to maximise the coverage
area. Designated Keswick Town Council
employees can access the footage remotely at
any time as required.
Access control installation
enhances apartment security
Delta Security has further enhanced security at a
private residential development in Woodford,
Essex with a new security installation including
audio-visual access control and new aluminium
security doors.
The access control solution serves 30
apartments and comprises Videx door entry
functionality and an Intratone cloud-based fob
key system. Each resident now has an LCD video
screen connected to their handset allowing them
to see and hear who is attempting access. The
system has been extended to include both the
front and back trade entrances providing
additional convenience for residents accepting
supermarket and online deliveries.
The key fob system provides each resident
with access to both entrances, with fobs
distributed to individuals and fully explained to
residents prior to installation. Management is
able to program fobs on site using the software
provided, updating access as and when required.
Craig Tranfield, resident board member,
responsible for the project says the fob system
is ideal for a development of this type:
Securing doors at the Design
Museum in London
Abloy UK has supplied the Design Museum in
Kensington, London, with over 56 PROTEC2 CLIQ
electromechanical cylinders to secure doors
within the building and form part of a security
system that protects high value assets and
exhibits.
The Design Museum building is 10,000 square
metres with over 100 staff working at any given
time in the three galleries, restaurant, café and
events space.
The museum opened to the public in November
2016 and required a new master key system
within the schedule.
Abloy were asked to specify two options - a
solely mechanical solution and PROTEC2 CLIQ, an
electro-mechanical solution.
CLIQ was selected over the mechanical option
as this gave the museum more flexibility to
change access, whilst eliminating the need to
change cylinders. There are a number of different
contractors on site every day and the security
team were having to escort visitors around the
site, which was proving very time consuming.
The CLIQ software was installed in the control
room and the cylinders secured doors, allowing
access only to areas personnel were authorised to
enter. This gave the flexibility to change access
without jeopardising security. For example, if a
master key was lost on a mechanical system they
would have had to replace cylinders as well as
keys which would have been costly, but CLIQ
eliminated this risk.
Abloy worked closely with the architect and
construction company to obtain information of
door sizes and quantities and also highlighted
“Previously keys were given to residents’ family
members and there was no way to manage the
number of keys distributed or cancel a key if it
went missing. As each fob is coded we are able
to cancel any that are lost, and indeed
reprogram them if they turn up! This system
allows us to allocate access to additional doors
for those with a responsibility for both blocks.”
compliance requirements to ensure the
installation met British Standards.
Brian Reeves, Head of Facilities at the Design
Museum, said: “We felt that a traditional cylinder
locking system wouldn’t work for us, because if
keys were lost we’d have to replace the whole
suite. By using CLIQ we can just replace the lost
key, or cancel access.
“The system also allows us to audit access,
giving us more granular control over the building.”
Lisa O’Flynn, CNI Account Manager at Abloy
UK, added: “CLIQ gives the Design Museum extra
functionality over a mechanical system. As well as
being able to change access rights, the system
offers audit trails, and can be integrated with
other cloud-based solutions for control via one
central management programme.”
