she was on the team a few
weeks ago, Manaia is now
trying to raise funds to cover

the club and
what it can provide for the
community
Not many people seem to
have heard of the Morrison Ave
Bowling Club, or where its greens
and clubhouse are situated.
Morrison Ave runs between
Sawyers Arms Rd and Langdons
Rd and the club is situated about
halfway between these roads, and
adjacent to a small reserve. A big
new development is under way
over the back fence.
At the club’s recent annual
meeting (the 59th) it was reported
that we are the sixth-largest club
in Christchurch.
We have a growing membership
and most of our work is carried
out by volunteer labour.
The club has two greens, one
of which was rejuvenated during
last winter and spring. During
the season, the club hosted two
national events where the participants
praised the high quality of
the greens. I’d like to give special
thanks to our greens superintendent,
Bill McMaster.
The club’s secretary, Margaret
Shields, advised that we have two
excellent coaches, Len Isett and
Bev Terry.
Club bowls are available for
learners and those wishing to test
their skills, especially in the business
house tournament which
runs each year in the summer.
For those who wish to play all
year round, indoor bowls are
played using full-sized bowls in
the clubrooms during the winter.
We have a partnership arrangement
with the junior section of
the Merivale-Papanui Rugby
Football Club. The club holds its
weekly prize-giving functions in
our clubrooms – a win-win for
both clubs.
I would also mentioned our
facilities are available for use by
other groups.
My challenge – how about your

barbecue sizzles?

– Leap of Faith
In these works I challenge my doubts and beliefs
that anything is possible, that dreams really do come
true. There is also a plunge into the unknown subtly
represented in these paintings, a leap of faith into what
cannot be seen, what lies beneath, what hides around the
corner.
All we need to do is to take that risk, the first step, and
surrender to the unknown. Then the real adventure
begins.
My studio overlooks the sea and influences the way
I think and create. Its forever changing moods, one
moment calm and serene, the next rough and unforgiving,
always with the freedom to do as it pleases, being
accountable to no one. The constant ebb and flow of the
tides with its contrasting colours and textures incites
both peacefulness and restlessness in my moods and
creativity. It is the joy and the fun that the ocean delivers
to us that I have tried to capture in these works.
A Leap of Faith is about taking that risk, not waiting or
you may be waiting all your life. In the end we may only
regret the chances we didn’t take, the relationships we
were afraid to have and the decisions we waited too long
to make. Go on, take the leap!
About Jacqui: an artist of figurative subjects with life
and energy, Jacqui lives and paints on an isolated farm
in Port Levy, Banks Peninsula with her husband Chris
and daughter Phoebe. While Jacqui’s subject matter
is invariably the human form, it is secondary to her
exploration of form, structure, movement, colour and
texture.
