2017 was a quieter year for COASC than previous years, with
our President struggling with a health crisis all year. We’re a small,
young club and each Board member is vital to our success. While we
weren’t able to organize events to the extent that we did the previous
year, the Board and members rallied and put on a successful Spring
Fling conformation weekend of 3 shows. COASC also modified
its by-laws and held nominations and elections in the fall, and we
collectively gathered our optimism for a renewed 2018.
As I write this, COASC’s show committee is busy preparing
for our annual Spring Fling conformation show, which promises
to be bigger and better than ever. We’ve committed to an all-
ASCA breeder judge panel this year. For the first time, we sought
sponsorship of classes for our show, which was well received and
funded by the membership. We’re thrilled with the support – when
you’re a small club, every penny counts.
COASC is also busy planning educational events for the year
– perhaps a herding instinct test is in the near future.
We’re off to a fresh, fun start in 2018 and encourage you to
Hello from The Netherlands: 2017 was another good year for
our club.
We started with stock trials in May with judges Sandra Zilch
and Anneke de Jong. It was the first trial in Europe with just
European judges.
Of course, just before the trials the fox came and took most of
the ducks. Thanks to Silke and Jule we still had a trial with ducks,
Silke took a bunch of the stinking critters in her car. She had to
drive a couple of hours to get here.
Stock trials in June our judge was Robyn Johnson- Garrett.
We also organized farm trials on all stock again.
Our stock trials in September were judged by Maarten Walter.
For the first time we handed out beautiful bronze statues of an
Australian Shepherd as a year-end award. The winners were:
• High Combined Started: Silke Jungeling and Moonrise a
Secret pleasure
• High Combined Non WTCH: Shirley de Boer and Jolly
Sox des Compagnons du Berger
• High Combined WTCH: Kay Pieper and Doc Piepers Tio
Pepe
This really made for a nice competition and we plan to hand
this out every year.
New WTCH dogs this year were;
• Nina Krammer & Black Rebel of Mi Sombra
• Jasmin Daniel & S Bar L Negev
• Heike Gessler & Muddy Fields Blixen
• Shirley de Boer & Jolly Sox des Compagnons du Berger
• Sandra Zilch & Crown Point S Bar L McMahon
• Kay Pieper & Doc Piepers Hija del Cortador
We are always grateful for the American judges willing to
take the time to fly over here. Long days combined with the jetleg
takes a person with a lot of interest in the dogs.
Many trials planned again for 2018. We will also host the
European MVA Championship again.
This event is getting bigger every time we organize. It takes
a lot of planning and volunteers to make it happen. This year we
will do 2 conformationshows, 2 agility trials, 2 obedience trials,
2 rally trials and 8 stockdog trials in May. Judges are Richard
Pittman, David Clayton and Rick Hardin. Just in case, Anneke de
Jong will be overflow judge.
There are some great buckles made by Fabrizio in Italy for
places one, two and three, and of course the engraved plate for the
winner donated by the Carrillo family.
Hope to see everybody and maybe some new faces this
year! Check out our website www.dwas.nl.
Southern Colorado Australian Shepherd Club (SCASC) started
our year in 2017 with our “Red Flannel Show” weekend in January,
as we’ve done for over 10 years now. Two all-breed rally trials on
Saturday started the weekend, judged by Janice Dearth who traveled
from Texas to bring some very challenging courses to us. Never a
dull moment in the rally ring when Janice is in charge! We wrapped
up on Sunday with two well-attended conformation shows. Nice to
see some of the same dogs in the conformation ring and the rally
ring!
Our March “Kiss the Blarney Stone” weekend was a great
success, if club-member exhaustion by the end of the weekend is a
legitimate way to measure success! Saturday offered one obedience
trial and two rally trials – that is a VERY long day! Sunday offered
two conformation shows to round out the weekend.
With the increased interest in the sport of Rally Obedience,
we tried adding a one-day trial in April. We located a facility in
Lakewood, Colorado that has padded flooring so we didn’t have
to haul our club trailer with mats and spend hours setting up rings.
It was a huge success! Our numbers of other breeds participating
in ASCA rally and obedience are increasing; we are known as “the
fun club” for trials!
SCASC worked alongside Colorado Australian Shepherd
Association (CASA) to put on a 4-day Memorial Day Classic
weekend event in Kiowa, Colorado, which offered exhibitors
conformation, agility, rally, obedience, and stock competitions,
as well as MVA and MJA competition, and finishing with a Best
in Show weekend award. People travel from all over the U.S. to
compete at our Memorial Day Weekend shows and trials.
Our educational event was a summer day of herding instinct
testing, held at a local stock trainer’s ranch near Elizabeth,
Colorado. So many sheep – so little time!! At least that’s what the
dogs seemed to be thinking. They loved it, and as a result, many
are actively taking lessons in herding or trialing their dogs.
We hosted a Rally Pre-Trial at the 2017 Nationals in Texas, with
a “Sunflower Extravaganza” theme. Club members worked hard for
months in advance, culminating in a well-run, well-attended and
successful rally trial. Our beautiful sunflower-colored rosettes were
a huge hit! We must have done a good job, because the Nationals
