It’s graduation time,
and high school students are
planning what comes next.
What advice would you
give to today’s graduates?
NICK STAFFIERI
of Clayton would
encourage new
graduates to consider
the trades. “There’s
too much pressure
to go to college,” he
said. “My college
friends are up to their
eyeballs in debt. My
friends who work in
the trades are rolling
in dough.”
“I’d tell graduates to
go into the service,”
said JIM CONFREDO
of Westampton.
“Learn about the
world and get some
street-smarts. Kids
today have no clue.”
Haddonfield’s
FLORENCE
WARNER says
“Don’t take things
personally. Let
criticism bounce off
you. You know your
skills and talents,
and what you’re
worth.”
PRUDY LA MANTIA
of Bellmawr would
advise graduates to
not rush. “Take things
as they come. Enjoy
them for what they
are. Give yourself
time to appreciate life
as it is.”
Haddonfield’s DAVE
PODGOR would
urge graduates to
not take life too
seriously. “If you do
what you enjoy and
enjoy what you do,
good things will
come to you.”
“Know your passion,”
said KEVIN ROCHE
of Haddonfield. “Life
is too short to live
with regret.”

#020 • JUNE 1 TO 15, 2018
British are coming! (again)
It’s a big day for the Indian King Tavern Museum.
Re-enactors portraying the Red Coats and the rebel
Colonialists will face-off in a skirmish in downtown
Haddonfield at 1pm on Sat Jun 2.
The sixth annual re-enactment marks the 240th
anniversary of the conflict in Haddonfield on the
soldiers’ march to Monmouth NJ, where there was
a battle four days later. Hosted by the Friends of the
Indian King Tavern Museum, this event is free and
family-friendly, and tells the tale of Haddonfield’s
rich Revolutionary War heritage. Residents and
shop owners are warned to bury their valuables as
the Red Coats will be “looting and pillaging.”
The events begin at 10am, when the Second
Pennsylvania Regiment – the Continentals – will
encamp at the Indian King Tavern Museum until the
troops foray with the First Battalion of New Jersey
Volunteers (Red Coats).
Kings Highway from Haddon Avenue to Grove
Street will close just before 1pm as the Red Coats
will march upon the Indian King and encounter a
regiment of Colonial Patriots. There will be plenty of
sidewalk space for viewing and cheering along Kings
Highway. The conflict should take about 20 minutes,
so don’t be late. Soldier reenactors will be available
to meet visitors after the skirmish. Children can
march in formation with wooden muskets in front of
the Tavern Museum, which is offering tours all day.
Land-use public meetings
The Planning Board will conduct a public hearing
and three other special meetings to review potential
Land Development Ordinance changes to better
protect the distinctive character of Haddonfield
neighborhoods.
A public hearing will be held Tue Jun 5 at the
Planning Board’s regularly scheduled 7:30pm
meeting to hear testimony on several re-zoning
proposals that the Board’s Land Use Team has
recommended. The recommendations seek to rezone
up to 54 residential lots to more appropriate
zone classifications. Details of the re-zoning
recommendations can be seen on the Borough
website under Latest News/Planning Board’s Land
Use Sub-Committee, or scan the QR code n.
The Planning Board is also investigating
recommendations to better harmonize new homes
with their surrounding neighborhoods. These
requirements address a home’s height, the size of
attics, the exterior height of basements, the size of
front yards, visually dominating attached garages,
and monolithic façades on the sides of homes.
Residents are encouraged to attend three
working sessions on this topic to offer their
recommendations. The meetings are scheduled for
Wed Jun 13 and Wed 20 at 7pm in the Borough Hall
Auditorium.
#020 • JUNE 1 TO 15, 2018
In Haddonfield, giant trees
link past and present
By Robin Potter – Chair, Shade Tree Commission
With 9,000 street trees and thousands more on private land, Haddonfield’s tree
population easily outnumbers our 11,500 residents. Most of those trees were planted
within the past century, but Haddonfield also is home to a few ancient, giant trees.
“Tree-lined” is a favorite adjective for our town, but those massive, historic trees are
living links to Haddonfield’s heritage.
Consider the big, beautiful trees in the
Society of Friends’ cemetery on Haddon
Avenue. The largest, at over 100 feet tall,
with a spreading canopy and a trunk
diameter of 70 inches, is an American
Sycamore or Buttonwood tree (Platanus
occidentalis) that stands amidst the
gravestones of the Nicholson family. One of
a pair believed to have been planted at the
time of Elizabeth Haddon Estaugh’s death
in 1762, the tree’s stunning white branches
stand out against a clear blue sky in
testimony to the town’s Quaker founders.
By the old pump house on Lake Street,
a massive Black Oak (Quercus velutina)
was already growing in what was then a
woodland at the time of William Penn’s
landing in 1682. Over 60 feet high, with a
diameter of over 65 inches, this massive
tree was celebrated with a plaque on Arbor
Day 1985 by Haddonfield’s Children of the
American Revolution.
Six enormous American Beech trees
(Fagus grandifolia) march through the Birdwood section of Haddonfield. They are all
that remain from a much larger planting completed by John Estaugh Hopkins around
1795 to mark the original, long abandoned entrance drive from Grove Street to his
home, Birdwood, which is still located on Hopkins Lane. These trees, now growing in
residents’ yards, each measure over 50 inches in diameter and are easily identified by
their smooth grey bark.
Although virtually all American Elms (Ulmus americana) were struck down by Dutch
elm disease in the 1950s and 1960s, a few mature examples still grow in Haddonfield.
Look for the distinctive vase-shaped profile of these trees, growing over 80 feet high,
in the front lawns of homes at the corner of Washington and Lafayette Avenues and
at the corner of Warwick Road and Jefferson Avenue. Thanks to the work of a New
Jersey-based tree nursery, a disease-resistant American Elm has been developed,
enabling Haddonfield once again to plant this iconic tree along our streets.
The State of New Jersey maintains a list of Champion Trees, the biggest trees
reported in the state. A Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos) growing on Euclid
Avenue has been on that list since the 1990s. One elementary school teacher has
photographed her class in front of the tree and reports that it is thirteen children
wide. But all tree species have lifespans, and Haddonfield’s Honey Locust tree is
failing. Large branches have fallen, and plans are being made to remove the tree.
Giant, historic trees enrich our present even as they link us to our past. Four years
ago, I planted another native tree, a Basswood or American Linden (Tilia americana),
in my front yard. It already is 20 feet tall and this spring, for the first time, I enjoyed
the fragrance of its flowers. Generations from now that tree may mean as much to
residents as our State Champion does to me.
As you look out your door today, consider whether your yard can become home to
a tree that future generations will cherish and fight to save.

Quinn Plunkett, Rachel D’Emilia,
and Emily Dombrowski.
“Each student came into this with
great energy and motivation, and
hopefully the program’s format
helped them to structure their
experience in a meaningful way.”
Bill Seaman, Concentration of
Studies Coordinator
#020 • JUNE 1 TO 15, 2018
On Thursday, May 24, the senior class of the
Concentration of Studies program at the High School
shared their capstone presentations to an audience
of school administratiors, counselors, parents, and
students.
The program gives students the opportunity to take
focused coursework at the high school and engage in
career mentorship experiences in professional settings.
The students choose an area of concentration and
pursue mentorships that offer real-life experiences with
the goal of exploring their career interests while also
building a resume in that field.
The students who completed the Concentration
of Studies program in 2018 are Emily Dombrowski
(concentration: Business), Caitrin Gilmartin (Allied
Health), Rachel D’Emilia (Allied
Health), and Quinn Plunkett
(Applied Science). All displayed
maturity, initiative, and
responsibility in successfully
pursuing a variety of impressive
mentorship experiences. During
their presentations on May 24, each
student highlighted meaningful
aspects of mentorship experiences,
discussed favorite courses at the
high school, and reflected upon
personal growth attained as a
program member.
Emily Dombrowski worked
under the mentorship of David Hunter at Haddonfield
Today and with Customized Energy Solutions, an energy
consulting firm.
Caitrin Gilmartin shadowed an ultrasound technician
at Einstein Hospital and school nurses at Kingsway
Learning Center.
Rachel D’Emilia participated in the MED Academy at
the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, learned
under doctors and counselors at the MD Anderson
Cancer Center at Cooper University Hospital, and
shadowed medical school students at the Rowan School
of Osteopathic Medicine.
Quinn Plunkett secured a research opportunity
involving the DNA extraction of leeches in the Biology
department at Rutgers University, Camden.
School Report is provided
and paid for in part by the
Haddonfield Board of Education.
District and school administrators had high praise for
the program and the participants:
Mike Wilson, Assistant Superintendent – “I was
very proud to see how the students took initiative and
ownership of their experiences. They certainly grew as
young adults through the Concentration of Studies.”
Chuck Klaus, Principal – “The student presentations
were highlighted by personal reflections connected
to growth within the program. It was exciting to see
them have an avenue to explore and satisfy their innate
curiosity.”
Judy Dorfman, School Counselor – “The students
were professional in their presentations, and the
experiences they shared have been beneficial for their
career growth and exploration.”

First Sunday = First Baptist history display
For the Historical Society of Haddonfield’s next First Sunday pop-up display
on Jun 3, they are working with the First Baptist Church of Haddonfield to
celebrate its 200th anniversary. The society will show archival materials that
relate to the church, including historic images. The church’s 200th anniversary
committee will be sharing items from the congregation’s own historical
collection, including a diary kept by its first minister, Rev. John Sisty (1783-
1863). Join them at Greenfield Hall, 343 Kings Hwy E, anytime between 12:30
and 3 pm. The Baptist Cemetery just across the street will also open its Chapel
from 2 to 3 pm that day. As with other First Sundays, the Society will give tours
of Greenfield Hall, and the Archives Center and Research Library will be open
for researchers next door in the Samuel Mickle House. If you miss the Baptist
Church display on Sun Jun 3, it will continue in Greenfield Hall during the
Historical Society’s public hours on Mon Jun 4 and Wed Jun 6.
Night Market: Thu Jun 21
The Haddonfield Night Market Food Truck
Festival is back on Thu Jun 21 from 4 to 8pm. The
area’s best street cuisine is a food lover’s dream
– barbecue to Italian, Chinese, plus desserts, will
be served from themed food trucks along a closed
Kings Highway. Plus, many Haddonfield restaurants
have outdoor dining options. The event takes place
during the business district’s Late Night Thursdays.
The Haddonfield Farmers’ Market will be open
for business in Kings Court, and local churches will
provide tables and chairs for food-truck diners.
The Rotary Club of Haddonfield is sponsoring
the music – All Souled Out, a favorite party band
– in lieu of its usual July concerts on the Highway
this year. The band wil play from 5 to 8pm in front
of Kings Court. Bring your own chair and enjoy the
concert.
The Pick-up Band will give its Summer Solstice
Concert outside the Masonic Temple at 7pm. If you
play an instrument, come and join them!
DJ Frank Staff will be in front of 221 Kings Hwy E,
across from Borough Hall, to coordinate music from
4 to 5pm and during band breaks.
During the Food Truck event, shoppers and
foodies are encouraged to take and share photos of
food truck creations as they browse from truck to
truck. Be sure to use the hashtag #HaddonfieldEats
when posting to social media.
Participating food trucks so far will include:
• Beast of the Street
• Carolina Baby Blue Rolling Kitchen
• Empanada Guy
• Flaming Basil Laos ‘n’ Thai Cuisine
• Jeremiah’s Custom Cuisine
What rows around
goes around.
For several years after it was established in
2003, the Haddonfield Crew Club rowed from
a ramshackle ramp near the Cuthbert Avenue
bridge over the Cooper River in Cherry Hill.
After the Camden County Boathouse opened in
2006, the club was able to bunk in with several
other school, college, and independent clubs.
Although the
young club
now had a
safe home for
a new eight,
it didn’t have
the money to
buy one.
That’s when
Rotary rode
to the rescue with a major donation that enabled
the club to purchase a new eight-seat boat.
Recently, the Rotary Club of Haddonfield
found itself in need of a trailer in which to store
its “stuff” – signs, parade banners, and such.
And the Crew Club found itself in need of a
new trailer.
Recalling the
generosity
of Rotary a
dozen years
ago, the Crew
Club offered
its gently
used trailer
to Rotary,
which accepted the gift without hesitation – and
thanks. What rows around goes around.
Free concert: ‘Peter and
the Wolf’ Sat Jun 2
On Sat Jun 2 at 3pm, The Rotary Club of
Haddonfield will sponsor a special outdoor performance
of Prokofiev’s classic “Peter and the Wolf”
for families, children, and the young-at-heart on the
lawn in front of the Public Library. The free concert
is co-sponsored by the Friends of the Library and
is also a Summer Reading Kickoff. Bring blankets or
folding chairs.
The concert is a collaboration between the
library and Symphony in C and will be performed
by the Whitman Winds Ensemble. This two-part
family-oriented program will begin with a reading of
a book selected by the children’s librarian, Jordan
Bilodeau, accompanied by the musical score. The
performance of “Peter and the Wolf” will follow.
Symphony in C’s Vice President of Artistic Operations,
Joseph Hart, will narrate both stories. This
engaging program will enable children to see musical
instruments up close and encourages a life-long
appreciation of music. If the weather is not cooperative,
the performance will be relocated to the
auditorium of Borough Hall.
The Whitman Winds is a chamber ensemble with
members hailing from the Philadelphia region. They
are all current or former members of Symphony in
C, and they take their name from the famous poet.
The Last Word
#020 • JUNE 1 TO 15, 2018
‘For love of country
they accepted death ...’
By Mayor Neal Rochford
On behalf of my fellow Commissioners and the community of Haddonfield, I thank
you all for being here on Memorial Day 2018. In particular, I thank Commander Peter
Hill and members of American Legion Post 38 for sponsoring this ceremony, and Past
Commander Tom Baird for organizing it.
Memorial Day is the day we honor those who died while serving in our country’s
armed forces, and remember the sacrifices they made to protect our way of life.
While many families will celebrate the start of summer today, other families will pay
solemn visits to cemeteries to honor their loved ones, to reflect on their bravery, on
their dedication for our freedom, and on their unselfish sacrifices.
Former President Harry S. Truman
once said, “America was not built on
fear. America was built on courage,
on imagination and an unbeatable
determination to do the job at hand.”
Because the lives of so many who
paid the ultimate price was exemplified
by courage, imagination, and
determination, we can live not in fear,
but in hope.
American values call on us to protect
the homeland and be a beacon to
others around the world, especially in
times of great need. American values
At Post 38, bugler Tom Reiter, and (from right)
Mayors Kasko, Rochford, Tarditi, and Colombi.
call on us to intervene where there is
strife, hunger, or natural disaster. We
do not wish to conquer or exploit
other lands … only to bring peace and
promote justice.
The world is a dangerous place that many would like to destabilize and terrorize
for their own evil ends. Sometimes, we must call on the men and women of our armed
forces take action in pursuit of our values. Even though it may put them at great risk,
they do not flinch from their duty. As
members of the greatest fighting force
in the world, they have shown time and
time again that they are up to the task of
promoting the ideals that have made this
nation great.
President Truman also said: “And for
love of country they accepted death,
and thus resolved all doubts, and made
immortal their patriotism and virtue.”
For many of us, the loss of a loved one
never goes away. The empty chair will
always remain empty. We will never feel
whole again. We salute those who never
came back, and console their families for their loss, and for what might have been.
As a nation, we must continue to seek peace and a just world. Let us show the world
that although it may have a terrible cost, freedom is worth fighting for.
To those who served in the armed forces and now suffer physical and mental pain,
we wish you the best care and a full recovery.
To those with family members in the armed forces – at home or abroad – we wish
your loved ones a safe and speedy return.
May God bless America.
