and Emily Dombrowski.
“Each student came into this with
great energy and motivation, and
hopefully the program’s format
helped them to structure their
experience in a meaningful way.”
Bill Seaman, Concentration of
Studies Coordinator
#020 • JUNE 1 TO 15, 2018
On Thursday, May 24, the senior class of the
Concentration of Studies program at the High School
shared their capstone presentations to an audience
of school administratiors, counselors, parents, and
students.
The program gives students the opportunity to take
focused coursework at the high school and engage in
career mentorship experiences in professional settings.
The students choose an area of concentration and
pursue mentorships that offer real-life experiences with
the goal of exploring their career interests while also
building a resume in that field.
The students who completed the Concentration
of Studies program in 2018 are Emily Dombrowski
(concentration: Business), Caitrin Gilmartin (Allied
Health), Rachel D’Emilia (Allied
Health), and Quinn Plunkett
(Applied Science). All displayed
maturity, initiative, and
responsibility in successfully
pursuing a variety of impressive
mentorship experiences. During
their presentations on May 24, each
student highlighted meaningful
aspects of mentorship experiences,
discussed favorite courses at the
high school, and reflected upon
personal growth attained as a
program member.
Emily Dombrowski worked
under the mentorship of David Hunter at Haddonfield
Today and with Customized Energy Solutions, an energy
consulting firm.
Caitrin Gilmartin shadowed an ultrasound technician
at Einstein Hospital and school nurses at Kingsway
Learning Center.
Rachel D’Emilia participated in the MED Academy at
the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, learned
under doctors and counselors at the MD Anderson
Cancer Center at Cooper University Hospital, and
shadowed medical school students at the Rowan School
of Osteopathic Medicine.
Quinn Plunkett secured a research opportunity
involving the DNA extraction of leeches in the Biology
department at Rutgers University, Camden.
District and school administrators had high praise for
the program and the participants:
Mike Wilson, Assistant Superintendent – “I was
very proud to see how the students took initiative and
ownership of their experiences. They certainly grew as
young adults through the Concentration of Studies.”
Chuck Klaus, Principal – “The student presentations
were highlighted by personal reflections connected
to growth within the program. It was exciting to see
them have an avenue to explore and satisfy their innate
curiosity.”
Judy Dorfman, School Counselor – “The students
were professional in their presentations, and the
experiences they shared have been beneficial for their
career growth and exploration.”
