#020 • JUNE 1 TO 15, 2018
British are coming! (again)
It’s a big day for the Indian King Tavern Museum.
Re-enactors portraying the Red Coats and the rebel
Colonialists will face-off in a skirmish in downtown
Haddonfield at 1pm on Sat Jun 2.
The sixth annual re-enactment marks the 240th
anniversary of the conflict in Haddonfield on the
soldiers’ march to Monmouth NJ, where there was
a battle four days later. Hosted by the Friends of the
Indian King Tavern Museum, this event is free and
family-friendly, and tells the tale of Haddonfield’s
rich Revolutionary War heritage. Residents and
shop owners are warned to bury their valuables as
the Red Coats will be “looting and pillaging.”
The events begin at 10am, when the Second
Pennsylvania Regiment – the Continentals – will
encamp at the Indian King Tavern Museum until the
troops foray with the First Battalion of New Jersey
Volunteers (Red Coats).
Kings Highway from Haddon Avenue to Grove
Street will close just before 1pm as the Red Coats
will march upon the Indian King and encounter a
regiment of Colonial Patriots. There will be plenty of
sidewalk space for viewing and cheering along Kings
Highway. The conflict should take about 20 minutes,
so don’t be late. Soldier reenactors will be available
to meet visitors after the skirmish. Children can
march in formation with wooden muskets in front of
the Tavern Museum, which is offering tours all day.
