Critical Path by: Richard Buckminster Fuller
Richard Buckminster “Bucky” Fuller
July 12, 1895 – July 1, 1983)was an
American architect, systems theorist,
author, designer, and inventor.
Fuller published more than 30
books, coining or popularizing
terms such as “Spaceship Earth”,
ephemeralization, and synergetic.
He also developed numerous inventions,
mainly architectural designs,
and popularized the widely known
geodesic dome. Carbon molecules
known as fullerenes were later
named by scientists for their structural
and mathematical resemblance
to geodesic spheres.
Fuller was the second World President
of Mensa from 1974 to 1983.
Critical Path is a book written by US author and inventor R. Buckminster
Fuller with the assistance of Kiyoshi Kuromiya. First published in 1981, it is
alongside Operating Manual for Spaceship Earth one of Fuller’s best-known
works. Vast in its scope, it describes Fuller’s own vision of the development of
human civilization, economic history, and his highly original economic ideology
based, amongst other things, on his detailed description of why scarcity of
resources need no longer be a decisive factor in global politics.
The Battle of New Bern June 2018 LOCAL HISTORY 5
The battle at New Bern was fought on the 14th
of March 1862 between the Confederate troops
under Brig. Gen Lawrence O. Branch and the Union
forces of Maj. Gen. Ambrose E. Burnside. In a campaign
popular known as the “Burnside Expedition”
Major General Ambrose had swept across the northeastern
region of the North Carolina coast with a large
powerful force of about 13,000 foot soldiers, supported
by navy gunboats. Burnside had earlier led his army
against Roanoke Island which was captured on the 8
of February. Few days later Elizabeth City on the mainland
was also captured. Burnside and his troops now
have unrestricted access to navigate through Pamlico
Sounds and Albemarle and He now shifted his attention
to New Bern on the mainland.
The city of New Bern was especially signifi cant because
it is an important coastal trade center; the Atlantic
and North Carolina Railroad that link up the coast
with the interior passed through the city. Furthermore,
New Bern is the second largest town in North Carolina.
Burnside started his expedition on 12 March with the
aim of capturing the city. Finally on the 13 of March
1862 Burnside arrived along the Neuse River just 15
miles south of New Bern accompanied by his 12000
army troops supported by 13 gunboats. Burnside’s
troops marched up North to face about 4,000 Confederate
troops commanded by General Lawrence O.
Branch. The Confederate troops consisted of a mix of
North Carolina infantry, artillery, and cavalry. Although
New Bern was protected by extensive defenses, Gen.
Major Branch did not have enough soldiers to staff
them effectively. Branch concentrated his troops along
the inner works just a couple of miles downriver from
the city. On the morning of March 14, Burnside’s troop
along with the brigades of John G. Parke, Brig. Gens
John G. Foster and Jesse Reno attacked troops close
to the railway. Within few hours of fighting, the Federals
drove the Confederates out of their fortifi cations
and occupied a base they would hold on to till the end
of the war despite several attempts to recapture it.
General Jesse Reno’s brigade targeted the weakest
link in the line, where an inexperienced Rebel militia
unit were positioned to hold off the Federals. The third
brigade joined forces with Reno and the Confederate
line was weakened and eventually collapsed.
The same day Union gunboats powered into the city.
Branch’s intention was to rally his army to protect New
Bern, but he couldn’t cope with the rapid pace of the
naval vessels and he was forced to order a retreat
inland to Kinston.
A total of 68 Confederate soldiers were killed, while
116 were wounded, and another 425 was missing or
captured giving a total of 609. All the soldiers lost their
camps, equipment and only two cannons were saved.
Burnside lost a total of 90 soldiers, with another 385
wounded, and one missing for a total of 476. The Battle
of New Bern produced a Confederate hero; Colonel
Zebulon Vance. Col Vance freed his battalion by using
boats to evade a bridge set on fi re by his allies and he
was voted governor some months later.
The Union occupied the city for the rest of the war
and because of this, the Confederacy left a number of
troops to defend the state against any unexpected advance
of union troops inland. New Bern was eventually
evacuated, and the Union forces took control of North
Carolina’s second largest city closing another port
through which the Confederates could ring in supplies.
The capture of New Bern made it the biggest Federal
stronghold in eastern North Carolina and further cemented
Burnside’s success along the Carolina coast.
FOOD
Save time in your morning with these kitchen hacks
(BPT) - It happens: You hit the snooze button once, twice,
then three times, so when you’re fi nally showered, dressed
and ready to tackle the day, you’re already behind schedule.
Oftentimes that causes you to skip breakfast completely.
Turns out, your breakfast habit is one time-saving step that
should not be skipped. First off, eating a nutritious, highprotein,
balanced breakfast every morning is a proven way
to kick-start your brain, improving concentration and performance.
Plus breakfast is linked to better weight control,
as it provides your body energy and may reduce hunger
later in the day.
Change up how you approach your morning meal and test
some of these chef-inspired time-saving tricks and shortcuts
in the kitchen.
Put away the knife and grater: Grocery stores are waking
up to the fact that customers love preparing delicious
foods at home, but they don’t love the time it takes to chop
and peel. Let the grocery store take on the “sous chef”
role, and explore your produce section for inspiration. Pick
up a container of sliced fruit and peeled eggs, and you’ll
have a grab-and-go breakfast. When you have extra time,
pre-chopped veggies and grated cheeses will complete
your omelet station in no time.
Pull out your slow cooker: The slow cooker is a must-have
tool for anyone wanting to save time in the morning. Just
pop in some oats, measure the water and add a cinnamon
stick, and you’ll wake up to the sweetly scented aroma
of a hot, comforting breakfast. Otherwise, hop online and
discover other surprisingly easy overnight breakfast ideas,
including egg casseroles and quick breads.
Find ways to consolidate: One of the frustrations of
cooking is how recipes sometimes layer in multiple steps
that leave you with a sink full of dirty pans and utensils
to scrub. Minimize the mess and look for one-pot recipe
options. Do all the sauteing and simmering in one Dutch
oven or stockpot, setting aside the cooked ingredients as
needed.
Keep it real: A photo-worthy homemade breakfast is
always a treat, but all you need are a handful of simple
HOW TO SEASON AND CARE FOR YOUR CAST IRON COOKWARE
You have a skillet that came from your mom, and before
that your grandma, and has now fallen into your hands. So
how do you take care of it, use it, clean it, and get the best
taste possible from it? It must be properly seasoned.
Here are the steps to seasoning your cast iron utensils.
1. First, wash with hot, soapy water and stiff brush.
2. Rinse and dry
3. Apply a thin coat of shortening both inside and out
4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees and line oven rack with foil
to catch drips
ingredients to create an inspired breakfast, with minimal
prep and cooking time. For example, apples, quinoa and a
few warm spices are all you need to make an unexpected
but protein- and fi ber-packed breakfast entree. Even better,
opting for a boil-in-bag option like Success Tri-Color
Quinoa gives you amazing cooked quinoa that’s ready for
the apple topping in just 10 minutes. Not to mention, Success
Quinoa is gluten-free and 100 percent whole grain.
Apple Cinnamon Breakfast Quinoa
Serves 2
Ingredients:
1 bag Success Tri-Color Quinoa
1 cup apple juice
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 tablespoon brown sugar
1 large apple, cored and sliced
1 tablespoon maple syrup
1/4 cup dried cranberries
1 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 cup walnuts, optional
1 cup vanilla yogurt, optional
Directions:
Prepare quinoa according to package directions, adding
apple juice to water.
Melt butter in a medium skillet over medium-low heat. Add
brown sugar, apple, maple syrup, dried cranberries and
cinnamon. Cook, stirring occasionally, until apples are just
tender, about 5 minutes. Stir in nuts, if desired. Serve quinoa
topped with apple mixture and yogurt, if desired.
5. Put cookware upside down on the upper rack of your
oven and bake for one hour.
6. Let the cookware cool before taking it out of the oven.
7. Store it in a cool, dry place and allow air to circulate
around it
8. Never wash in a dishwasher.
After using your cast iron, rinse with hot water and no
soap. Dry it thoroughly and coat it with a thin coat of cooking
oil, shortening or pan spray.
Gun Rights
by Joe Forbes
June 2018 OPINION 7
Joe Forbes is a lawyer based in Elizabeth City, NC.
He is passionate about our second amendment
rights and writes articles on gun law.
Dr. J. Stanley McQuade was famous for saying, “A
little bit of law is a dangerous thing”. Nowhere is
this more true than in the context of carrying fi rearms
across state lines. This is particularly applicable to those
of use who live near the state line, and travel frequently
to Virginia to work or shop. Many times, people assume
that the laws of the other state are the same as the laws of
their home state, and we all know what “assume” makes
out of u and me. Failing to know and comply with the foreign
state’s laws can result in civil liability, or even serious
criminal charges.
Concealed carry permit holders are already familiar with
the concept of “reciprocity”, whereby one state recognizes
a permit issued by another state. The fi rst thing a permit
holder should do when considering travelling to another
state is to verify that reciprocity exists between the states.
However, that is just the beginning of the process. While
in the other state, you must also comply with all of their
particular fi rearms laws, which may or may not make
sense to you. As an example, North Carolina changed our
law fairly recently to allow permitted conceal carry in an
establishment that serves alcohol, provided that the permittee
is not consuming alcohol. Carry into such an establishment
in a state that does not permit concealed carry on
that premises at all, and you are asking for trouble. Some
states have laws that ban possession of a weapon at all
on certain premises unless you have specifi c permission
from the person in control of the premises.
Those who prefer to carry their weapons openly can run
into similar trouble. In NC, open carry is generally allowed,
except in prohibited places like courthouses, schools, etc.
But cross into South Carolina or Georgia with a pistol on
your hip and you may get cited for open carry without a
permit, because they do indeed require a permit to carry
openly. Other states require that open carry be in a belt
holster only. Others ban open carry altogether.
Some differences in the law affect both open and concealed
carry. For instance, some states require that any
fi rearm brought into that state be registered with the police
within a given time. Others require a separate permit to
merely possess a weapon at all. Some states prohibit
carry on a highway rest stop, or a public park. Some have
“Stand Your Ground” or “Castle Doctrine” laws that expand
the circumstances when and if you can actually use the
gun, and some do not. Illinois requires a state-issued
Firearm Owner Identifi cation Card to even purchase ammunition.
Some municipalities ban the sale or possession
of hollow-point bullets. Special care must be taken when
travelling through highly-regulated states like Maryland,
where guns must be unloaded and locked in a separate
container in the trunk. And don’t even think about taking a
pistol into Washington, DC or New York City at all!
Carrying/transporting long arms deserves mention as
well. Everyone should be aware by now of the multitude
of states and municipalities which ban or restrict “assault
rifl es” or large capacity magazines. But some states
require that they be unloaded and carried locked in the
trunk. As discussed in a previous article, the Federal
Firearms Owners Protection Act is supposed to protect
people transporting fi rearms from one state to another
while merely “passing through” a state where the weapon
would be regulated or prohibited (if the weapon is transported
in compliance with the Act’s provisions), but it is no
guarantee against prosecution by an anti-gun zealot local
prosecutor.
The traps for the unwary are not limited to just fi rearms.
I used to attend a school for 2-3 days every year in Illinois,
where I drove 100 miles from the airport to the school in
unfamiliar territory after dark. I knew better than to try to
carry a pistol there, so I bought an electric stun gun. Then
I learned that Illinois also forbids carrying stun guns!
The lesson here is simple. When you cross that state
line, you might as well be entering a foreign country. The
ONLY rights that you take with you are the ones set out in
the United States Constitution and the FOPA. Ignorance
of their laws is not an excuse, and they don’t care how you
did it in North Carolina. We live in the “Information Age”,
when you can get a basic understanding of the foreign
state’s laws just by visiting a website or two. Educate
yourself before you travel. Some might consider it a
hassle, but it’s easier (and cheaper) than paying a lawyer.
8 TECH GIRL
BATTERY
TECHNOLOGY
Earlier in 2016 the director of ARPA-E, the U.S. Department
of Energy’s advanced research program for
alternate energy, Ellen Williams said and was quoted by
the Guardian “We have reached some holy grails in batteries.”
The world is on the cusp of a signifi cant change in
alternative energy and electric vehicles. Car manufacturers
and tech companies are pumping money into battery advancement,
and with the increasing pressure for races like
Formula E to improve, battery technology is only going to
get better. In facts, a number of startups are edging closer
to producing devices that are compact, economical, safe,
and energy-dense enough to store energy at the cost of
less than $100 a kilowatt-hour. Storing energy at that price
would have a stimulating effect, eliminating the problem of
running a 24 hour grid with renewable energy that’s available
only when the sun shines or the wind blows, and making
electric vehicles less expensive and lighter. The larger
the battery capacity, the lower the cost and the longer
electric cars can run; this translates to less dependence on
fossil fuel consumption.
Improvement in Battery Technology and its implications
Future developments in battery technology and a growing
role for electric vehicles and alternative energy could be
much closer than the market currently expects. Companies
that are fully reliant on old technology – either companies
that rely on fossil fuel power generations or car companies
devoted to the internal combustion engine— will face substantial
challenges. For instance, electric cars will require
considerably minor maintenance because an electric motor
has around half a dozen moving parts, compared to the
several moving parts in an internal combustion engine.
Furthermore, the growth in the number of self-suffi cient
homes could undermine the role of utility companies; with
solar power catering for the power needs of the homeowners.
For utility companies to stay relevant, they may need
to offer maintenance and management solutions or invest
in charging stations to benefi t from the adoption of electric
cars.
A growing body of experts is currently researching battery
constituents, with much emphasis on increasing nickel content
on lithium oxide cathodes and silicon content increasing
on the graphite anodes to enhance the performance
and capacity of the battery. Consider some practical
example of battery technology in use -
in Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft is currently working on a new
battery that could potentially give electric cars a range of
about 620 miles (1,000 km) on a single charge.
• Tesla’s latest electric car, the Model S 100D has a
100-kilowatt-hour battery pack, which supposedly gives it
a range of 335 miles (540 km). The battery pack is bulky,
about 6 feet wide, 16 feet long and 4 inches thick. Also,
it encloses more than 8,000 lithium-ion battery cells, and
each cell is separately wrapped inside a cylinder housing
measuring approximately 2-3 inches high and about 0.8
inches across.
• In 2016 Mercedes started a program in Germany that
uses the batteries it developed for electric vehicles, which
can tolerate a lot of charging and discharging cycles.
Mercedes partnered with utilities and solar companies
in Germany to store surplus energy for future use in the
home. Customers can install a group of solar cells on their
roof, and decide to add up to eight 2.5 kWh batteries. This
modular battery system allows the homeowner to store
energy depending on how much energy is being expended
and captured. The batteries serve as a gridlock if the grid
goes down, but they also allow users to make the most
of their solar energy. The modular battery system stores
energy created during the day for later use in the evening
when energy usage is often highest.
Expectations for the Future
The battery revolution is under way and you can rightly expect
some changes in the future once the technology has
been fully implemented. You can envision a society that
has moved to 100% autonomous driving, which hypothetically
should reduce car accident making the roads much
safer. Developing cost-effective battery storage will allow
nationwide grids to regulate infl ows of solar and wind power
and continue to supply electricity on demand even as
more dependable fossil fuel generation is phased out. As a
result, renewable energy will become a much more crucial
part of the energy mix. This could be potentially achieved
through ‘fl ow batteries’, where energy is stored in the liquid
electrolyte, which has the capacity to be recharged several
times more than lithium-ion batteries. Second-hand batteries
from electric vehicles can also be used for Grid-level
storage for a much cheaper storage solution. Fossil fuel
will eventually lose its relevance as wind and solar power
becomes cheaper and bigger proportion of power generation.
This scenario could result in a vicious or virtuous circle
(depending on individual’s point of view) whereby continuous
reduction in the capacity utilization for fossil fuel plants
leads to increasing unit costs for fossil fuel energy, making
renewables appear even cheaper. This could further stimulate
greater investment in renewables, cutting down their
costs even further.
So what is changing now?
Even though most of these advancements in battery
technology are still mainly theoretical, however there is
promise for the future. For instance, the battery’s energy
density has more than doubled over the years which have
led to reduction in the weight of battery within an electric
car. In addition, the cost of electric vehicle battery has
fallen by more than 90% from $1,000 per kWh to $273 and
it is projected to fall to $109 by 2025. The technological
advancement highlighted above is defi nitely not an exhaustive
list of the developments that have been made, but one
thing is for sure; electric vehicles will eventually become
more common as batteries are improved. The impacts of
advancement in battery technology will not only affect the
transportation industry, but will also signifi cantly transform
global energy markets. As batteries are improved in combination
with renewable energy sources, the need for gas, oil
and coal will drastically reduce. So despite the perceived
failings of batteries, the potential global impact that even
fairly moderate developments can have is astonishing and
thus must not be ignored.
(BPT) - There are thousands of reasons to love the summer,
and if you’re a pet owner, you love summer more
than most.
Summer is the perfect opportunity to get outside and get
active with our pets. Between cool swims in the pool and
brisk walks in the sunshine, summer is a great bonding
time for you and Fluffy or Fido.
However, it’s also important for pet owners to have a
proper understanding of factors that can affect their
pet’s health and safety during the warmer months. This
includes varying weather conditions, maintaining proper
nutrition and preparing for other summertime events.
With June being National Pet Preparedness Month, Dr.
Kurt Venator, Purina’s Chief Veterinary Offi cer, suggests
four things for pet owners to keep in mind this summer
so that we can live safe, healthy and happy lives
together with our pets whether at home or on the road.
Beating the heat
Just like the heat can make people feel unwell, the particularly
hot days of summer can leave pets dehydrated
or ill if not properly attended to. Pet owners should be
mindful of a pet’s exercise, outdoor time and hydration
to keep them feeling their best.
More specifi cally, if heading out for a walk, be sure to go
outside during cooler parts of the day like early morning
or early evening. Also, before you start your walk,
use your hand to feel the pavement. If it feels too hot to
touch, then it’s way too hot for your pet’s paws. Stay in
the grass or possibly try booties so his or her paws don’t
burn.
Above all, never leave your pet unattended in the car.
Your car acts like a greenhouse on hot days, and overheating
can set in quickly, causing permanent damage
to your pet, and even death. On hot days, it’s best to just
leave your pet at home.
Summer snacks and proper ingredients
With blueberries, strawberries and other yummy treats
in season during the summer, you can share these
healthy indulgences with pets too. Fruits like peaches,
strawberries and mangoes are great treats for pets as
long as pits, stems and leaves are removed and fruit is
thoroughly washed.
What’s great about these fruits is that they contain
vitamins, fi ber and antioxidants and tend to be low in
sugar, so when fed in moderation, they’re actually quite
healthy for dogs in the same ways they’re healthy for
humans. That’s why Purina includes fruits, like blueberries,
in their Beneful Playful Life and Beneful Grain Free
formulas. Made from real protein sources and blended
with an optimal amount of fruit and veggies, these foods
can give your pet the nutrition they need to play all day.
Did someone say vacay?
Taking to the skies? When fl ying with a pet, it’s important
to understand your pet’s needs. Therefore, you should
conduct the appropriate research, plan ahead and understand
airline/aircraft policies on the day of departure
to ensure the trip is just as safe for your pet as it is for
you. For instance, did you know that in order for your
pet to fly you should obtain a Certifi cate of Veterinary
Inspection? Most airlines require this document within
ten days of travel. This document must be signed by an
accredited veterinarian, and should indicate that your
pet has been examined and able to fl y.
Hitting the road? Buy a travel harness that comes across
your pet’s chest and clips onto a safety belt. This keeps
your pet secure and prevents him or her from interfering
with your driving. To keep your pet feeling comfortable
and entertained on the journey, also consider bringing
a cozy blanket, spill-proof bowl and time-consuming
treats, like the Purina Busy(R) Bone, to pass the hours
till you reach your destination.
Be prepared for natural disasters
Although it’s diffi cult to predict when natural disasters
will occur, preparing for the worst for your family and
your pet can make the difference when every second
counts - especially during hurricanes, tornadoes and
wildfi res. Understand what weather impacts your area,
have resources on hand and have a plan to keep everyone
safe.
Just like you, your pet should also have a disaster kit
that includes basic pet essentials such as bottled water,
cans of wet food, blankets, collapsible bowls, cat litter
and pan, and a leash and collar. A one- to two-week
supply of food that your pet usually eats is an ideal
amount to include in your disaster kit as well; however,
be sure to check the expiration dates. Pack the foods
your pet eats routinely to ensure complete and balanced
nutrition in stressful moments like this.
Spring by Robert Lethco
The Great Imposters
By: Coy Domecq
June 2018 NATURE 11
hen reading these articles highlighting native, local wild
W foods, it may seem that I have been overzealous in stressing
the importance of absolute confi rmation of plant identifi cation
prior to consuming these gifts from the ground. Failure to attain
certain knowledge of plant type can result in either a pleasant
meal by chance, or a decidedly undesirable outcome. If you are
not familiar with the story of the Greek philosopher Socrates,
hemlock tea was purportedly the drink of choice that removed
him from this earthly plane.
Both plants above are in the same Apiaceae botanical family.
They both grow in roughly the same environments and they both
can have hollow stems. The differences between the poisonous
hemlock plant and the edible Queen Anne’s Lace, aka wild
carrot, are slight but distinct. The hemlock tends to be taller and
more branching, or “tree-like”, than the wild carrot. The poison
hemlock stem is hairless and demonstrates purple blotches
along the length of the stem. Queen Anne’s Lace has a hairy
stem and lacks the purple coloring. Although both plants have
white fl ower clusters, Queen Anne’s Lace tends to have a reddish/purplish
center, hence the story of Queen Anne pricking her
fi nger and (dis)coloring the lace. This is not the case for hemlock
as the fl ower cluster is uniformly white. Additional signifi cant differences
between the plants exist that are beyond the scope of
this article.
There are many cases of good vs bad lookalike choices when
collecting wild foods. The degree of certainty when collecting
these plants is of paramount importance. This is not intended to
be a fi eld guide to positively identify these plants but to heighten
awareness of the similarities between edible and non-edible
plants in general. Oh, by the way, the poison hemlock leaf and
stem photographs presented above are on the left.
Queen Anns Lace Jelly
Ingredients:
-- 2 cups fresh Queen Anne’s lace
fl owers
-- 4 cups water
-- 1/4 cup lemon juice
-- 1 package powdered pectin
-- 3 1/2 cups plus 2 tbsp. organic cane
sugar
Instructions:
Bring water to boil. Remove from heat
and let cool 5 minutes. Add fl ower
heads and push them down into the
water until fully covered. Cover and
steep one half hour. Strain.
Measure 3 cups of the liquid into a
pot. Add lemon juice and pectin. Stirring
constantly, bring to a rolling boil.
Add sugar and stir constantly. Cook
and stir until mixture comes to a rolling
boil then boil one minute longer.
Remove from heat.Skim.
Pour into sterilized jars leaving 1/4”
head space. Process in a hot water
bath for 5 mins.
Spring brings about the birth on new plants & Animals.
Traveling through the nature trails, it is great to see
all the baby animals learning about their new home and
their surrounding wilderness. Now that Summer is upon
us, it is interesting to observe the babies learning to
survive on their own so fast. The parents are busy, both
feeding their young & teaching survival skills. I enjoy
watching how all the animals have thae same goals, but,
so many ways to get there. Survival of the fi ttest is so
visible during Summer. The food chain is bittersweet to
observe. It is cruel & at every link of the chain, there are
sacrifi ces that all species make.
LOCAL EVENTS
6 summer essentials to stay healthy and maximize the season
(BPT) - The long summer months are full of potential. From
hitting the beach to hitting the open road, there are plenty
of activities for you to get outdoors and explore the warm
weather. To make the most of the sunny days and starstudded
nights, you need to be prepared so you have fun,
stay safe and keep your health top of mind.
To have a healthy summer full of incredible memories,
experts recommend you don’t leave home without these
essentials:
Sunscreen: Any time you’ll be outside, it’s important to
wear sunscreen. This is especially important when spending
time around sand and water as these refl ect the sun’s
rays, which put you at higher risk for sunburn. The American
Academy of Dermatology recommends everyone use
sunscreen that offers broad-spectrum protection (protects
against UVA and UVB rays), is SPF 30 or higher, and is
water resistant.
Sunglasses: Did you know your eyes can get sunburned?
Protect those peepers by keeping sunglasses on hand.
If you wear prescription glasses, a stylish and affordable
solution is Solar Shield, available in clip-ons and fi ts-over
designs. Solar Shield sunglasses are polarized and come
at an affordable price point, so you can have a pair with
you for all your summer adventures. Put a pair in the car,
your workout bag, purse and backpack, the cabin and
anywhere else you’ll need sun protection.
Water: Staying hydrated is important for keeping your body
well, especially as the temperatures rise. When outdoors
during summer, your body needs H2O to stay energized
and keep cool. If you’re doing an activity in the heat, you’ll
need to increase your water intake. Keep a bottle nearby
and drink often. If you tend to forget, set an alarm on your
phone or use an app to remind you regularly.
Insect repellent: Warm weather brings out people to enjoy
nature, and whether you like it or not, that includes bugs.
From mosquitoes and ticks to ants and chiggers, bugs
thrive in the summer. The fi rst step to keep yourself protected
is to be aware of what insects you may encounter
during the activities you have planned for the day. Next, be
prepared by using appropriate insect repellent and clothing.
Shoes: The unoffi cial shoe of summer has to be the fl ipfl
op. This easy-on, easy-off shoe has been keeping feet
cool for generations. The problem is fl ip-fl ops offer little
support and put you at higher risk of injury. From stubbing
your toes to being a tripping hazard, fl ip-fl ops are a fl op
when it comes to your health. Support feet and be ready
for summer by shopping for supportive sandals with toe
and ankle straps. For example, athletic-style sandals are
trendy, durable and will last more than one season, making
them a worthwhile investment.
Cotton clothing: All-natural cotton can serve you well when
on summer adventures. Cotton breathes, meaning it allows
air to circulate against the body so you don’t get too hot.
It also can wick away sweat and dries quickly. Whether a
classic cotton T-shirt or a trendy swimsuit cover-up, it’s the
ideal material for covering up and staying cool.
These six must-have summer essentials will help you feel
your best so you can maximize every day to the fullest.
Have fun and stay safe for the best summer yet.
DOCTOR CRIME
Dr. Crime is a pseudonym for a social scientist holding a Ph.D. degree in sociology and in criminology.
He has worked in all major parts of the criminal justice system. Drop him a note at the
website www.keepkidshome.net if you or your child is in trouble, or you have custody issues, he
may be able to help, give him a call (252-339-0000).
Dear Dr. Crime: It seems that every time I cut on the TV
another school shooting is reported. Your reporting on
kids killing kids in school doesn’t tell me enough about
how much there is and if I should take my kids out of public
school. I see the local newspaper just ran an editorial
saying “Eventually a school shooting will come to N.C.”
Tell us how likely it is my kids will be in a shooting. Typical
Parents.
Dear Typical Mom and Dad: I suspect your emotions are
more common than any of us know. Parents have been
given many frightening reports. The amount of research
and statistics are massive because of the extremely
widespread concern for our children. I refer you to a free
download “Indicators of School Crime and Safety, 2016”
from the National Center for Education Statistics and the
Bureau of Justice Statistics. Go to https://nces.ed.gov/
pubs2017/2017064.pdf and let me what you think.
Dear Dr. Crime: I am a politician. I need to know the best
government policy to reduce school shootings and make
our schools safe again. No-name fellow.
Dear No-Name: I wish more politicians would ask for
advice from non-governmental researchers. I refer you
fi rst to the current issue of the American Journal of Criminal
Justice (Vol. 43, #1, Spring 2018) devoted entirely to
“School Safety: Increasing Understanding/Decreasing
Misunderstanding in the Realm of School Safety”. Moreover,
I encourage the government to create a statewide
body devoted only to a review of the scientifi c literature
on school safety. That group should provide to all county
Boards of Education and county managers periodic
reviews of what works and what does not work, and why.
The group should be independent of government so as
to be free of infl uence. The issue is more complex than it
fi rst appears.
Dear Dr. Crime: You are so full of bunk. Research heck!
I know how to keep kids in line, about anything. You
smack them, hard and often and right away. That will stop
the bad behavior! They will get the idea of what is right
and grow up well. Typical Dad
Dear Typical Dad: Many people agree with you. I agree
that some behaviors can be handled as you say, particularly
the part about the time lapse between the bad
behavior and your response. Punishment or reward has
to be quick to be linked with the child’s behavior. I am
far more in favor of rewarding good behavior than simply
punishing bad behavior. The May, 2018 issue of WebMD
(see your physician’s office for a copy) has a review of
what the research shows the impact of spanking children
has on them. The report shows that the majority of parents
agree with you to a large degree. BUT, the research
shows that spanking causes problems later in life. Citing
good research, the report indicated that corporal punishment
was associated with violence with a date, attempted
suicide, heavy drinking, drug use, depression, aggression,
and family fi ghts. And a review of 75 research studies
found no evidence spanking improved children’s behavior,
but taught them how not to get caught. If you have a child
go to WebMD.com and see the “alternatives to spanking”.
TYRRELL COUNTY
Blue Crabs
By: Jimmy Fleming
If one commodity has been exploited to the fullest in
Tyrrell County and eastern North Carolina over the
past 30 years it’s the amazing Blue Crab. From back in the
early days where they were caught on trot lines or hand
lines to today where they are caught using large baited
pots (traps). The blue crab is common in most eastern NC
waters but the Albemarle and Pamlico Sounds account for
most of the commercial harvest which exceeds 20 million
pounds per year.
Male crabs are called a Jimmy and female crabs are
called sooks or she-crabs depending on their age.. A
female crab with an egg mass attached to her body is
called a sponge crab and she can spawn twice in her life
releasing up to two million eggs each time. There are many
watermen in our area who make their living catching blue
crabs starting in early spring and into late fall depending
on market price and number of available crabs. In order to
grow, blue crabs must shed their shell up to 25 times during
their lives. During this time the old hard shell is replaced
with a new very soft shell that will gradually harden.
These softshell crabs are a delicacy that are harvested
and eagerly consumed by by locals and visitors alike. The
blue crab is not just for commercial harvest. Many locals
and visitors enjoy setting a crab trap or dangling a line
baited with a chicken wing to catch a mess of crabs. Most
of these end up in a pot of boiling water seasoned with
a good bit of Old Bay Seasoning. Any way you look at it,
commercial or sport, the blue crab is a welcome part of
eastern North Carolina’s marine environment. This summer,
enjoy some fresh softshells or a delicious crab boil …
cause they’re goooooooood!!!!
SUMMER MAKEUP FOR THE
MOM ON THE GO
Being a mom is not an easy job. You have to constantly run after your little ones to make sure they do not
burn the house down. Excuse us, we have all the right to exaggerate because this is exactly what it feels
like. Between all this, it gets really difficult to take some out to apply makeup and take care of yourself.
The biggest nightmare for a mom, especially the new ones, is to travel with your babies. Not only you have
to keep up with their non-stop antics, but also have the fear to look like a zombie in front of the world. To
make sure you always look your best while you are out and about with your kids, we are here with 5 makeup
tips tricks that many busy moms swear by.
Foods good for
your skin and hair
Spinach
Blueberries
Opt For A BB Cream:
Use Two In One Product:
Pay Attention To Your Lashes:
We know you don’t have extra time for
skincare and makeup so why not merge
them both. BB creams are known to
have several skincare properties like sun
protection, moisturizing, brightening, and
antioxidants. This way your skin will look
smooth and even while getting the nourishment
and protection it needs.
It is quite time-consuming to take care of several
different makeup products at once. Go for tints
that can be used on the lips as a lip color and on
the cheeks as a blush. This will save your time
and space without compromising on making you
look gorgeous.
Sleepless nights result in dull eyes,
which is not a very cute look. Apply a
few coats of mascara and your eyes
will have a new life. It will make your
eyes look wide open and fresh without
any extraordinary effort.
Avocado
Sweet Potato
Stain Is Your Best Friend:
Spice Up Your Eyes:
A busy mom on the go has no time to reapply
lipsticks again and again. Always opt for
something that is very long lasting like lip
stains. They will stay on your lips forever and
won’t transfer anywhere. This means endless
kisses to your babies and no touch-ups.
There is no better way to completely transform
your look than adding a bit of drama to
your eyes. Go for a felt tip, jet black eyeliner
which is so easy to wear that you can apply
even while sitting in your car.
Health and Nutrition Strategies for
Cancer Survivors and Everybody Else
How to eat more protein and
improve athletic performance
What’s in your diet?
Last month I mentioned the phrase
“If you don’t grow it, you don’t
know it” . Let’s drill down on that
concept. Our region has some of
the highest health disparities in the
country. The disparities are cancer,
diabetes, cardiac and stroke. All diet
related. The history of the area informs
that the state of North Carolina
itself, was created in 1789, for its
fertile soil and long growing season.
So, how does that reconcile? The air
is clean, the water is generally clean
according to the annual water report.
So, lets look at the soil part of our
environment.
I’ve been advocating for an accred
ited organic soil testing lab operating
out of Elizabeth City State University,
our local Non-Land-Grant College of
Agriculture (NLGCA). An organic soil
testing facility should be an important
economic and epidemiological asset
to the region. I strongly appreciate
the out pouring of community support
for our pursuit of cleaner more wholesome
food.
Warren is a 30 year member of the Institute of Food
Technology, A HAACP (hazard analysis critical control point)
Instructor with a Batchelors degree in Nutrition Science.
Economically, annual fee schedules
for organic testing are high. Some
as high as $5,000 annually just for
testing. The USDA uses third party
testing enterprises who set there
own fees which the USDA subsidizes.
A testing enterprise based out of
Clemson University is the nearest
tester in the region, but no longer services
North Carolina. The College of
the Albemarle (COA) is expanding it’s
curriculum to include Specialty crops,
and organic farming. Considering
our superior transportation logistics,
including a major seaport, rail, and
access to 60,000,000+ customers
within a days drive. Using modern
farming methods such as spin farming
(small acreage), high tunnels and
green houses, the Albemarle can be
a major player in the organic produce
sector.
In reading ECSU Chancellor
Thomas Conway’s exit interview, I’m
very pleased to learn of the possible
collaborative efforts of our three
higher education institutions (Elizabeth
City State University, College of
the Albemarle, and the Mid-Atlantic
Christian University). I pray that
agriculture enterprises and clean food
will be part of their agenda. Feeding
the poor is part of being a christian,
and our region is one of the poorest
in the state. Hopefully, these initiatives
will result in more economical
and healthier food choices, as we join
the global food chain as the “ Organic
Capital of the World”.
Finally, my clergy friends and family,
have convinced me that my advocacy
is a calling and I will accept that.
I will be dedicating the rest of my life
to advancing wholesome clean food
to all of our citizenry particularly those
on the lower economic scale. Join the
clean food movement.
Remember clean, wholesome,
nutritious food is critical to your and
your families quality of life and well
being. You are what you eat.
(BPT) - Whether competing recreationally, at an amateur
level or professionally in front of the world, proper nutrition
is a key component of any athlete’s performance. A variety
of nutrients come into consideration, but one seems to get
the highest level of attention: protein.
Because protein helps build and maintain muscle and body
tissue, it’s important for active individuals to eat enough.
Snacking on protein-rich foods and eating meals packed
with protein can help support an athlete’s physical wellness
so they can reach their goals.
Here are a few recommended practices for athletes to lead
the pack with their meal routines:
Pre-workout fuel for sustained energy: Before practice or a
workout, load up on whole grains and protein with hardboiled
eggs and a granola bar to keep you fueled longer. A
nutritional powerhouse with only 70 calories, one large egg
contains 6 grams of high-quality protein and nine essential
amino acids. Remember, your muscles rely on mainly
carbohydrates, but also protein for sustained energy during
activity.
Recovery and repair post-workout: After physical activity,
include eggs and other protein-packed foods in a postworkout
sandwich or wrap to help your recovery. Research
indicates eating a mix of carbs and protein - ideally about
20-30 grams of protein - has been shown to promote
muscle repair and optimal recovery.
Not only are eggs delicious, nutritious and versatile, they
are also one of the most affordable sources of high-quality
protein. This makes it easy for athletes to maintain an
optimal diet that is heavy on the results and light on their
wallets.
Previous misconceptions had many people just eating egg
whites, but today eating the yolk offers loads of nutritional
benefi ts. That’s because the yolk contains more than 40
percent of the protein in an egg and most of the egg’s nutrients,
like choline, vitamin B12 and selenium.
Want to fuel yourself to be the best you can be? The Incredible
Egg has a collection of protein-packed egg recipes
to help you get inspired. For athletes always on the go,
there are also quick and easy egg recipes to please any
palate. For example:
5 Foods for Better Eyesight
5 ways to win the fight against hunger cravings
June 2018
HEALTH 19
Eggs
Yogurt
Spinach
(BPT) - It’s a sadly familiar situation: You ate a nutritious
breakfast, packed a salad and ate a healthy lunch. You’re
eating better, cutting out the junk and everything is going
well ... until late in the afternoon.
Around 3 p.m. is when the cravings always hit. When your
stomach tells you it wants carbs and sugar, and those
snacks in the break room are irresistible. You start to convince
yourself that one candy bar isn’t really going to hurt
anything.
Almost everyone has experienced these hunger pangs.
The trick is, knowing how to handle them. These fi ve tips
will show you some of the best ways to manage and beat
these cravings.
1. Are you hungry or thirsty? When hunger fi rst hits, take
a step back to ask yourself if you need food or just a few
ounces of water. People often mistake thirst for hunger,
and the solution here might be that you need to stay hydrated
throughout the day. Keep a water bottle at your desk
and refi ll it often.
2. Get the right kind of protein. Experts frequently recommend
increasing your protein intake in order to stay full,
but not just any protein will do; you need to be sure you’re
getting the right kind of protein. For instance, casein protein
found in Muuna cottage cheese allows your body to digest
more slowly and keeps you full longer. With flavors like
strawberry, blueberry, pineapple, peach, mango, black
cherry, raspberry, vanilla and plain, satisfying your hunger
has never tasted better.
3. Add some spice to your life. Research has shown that
spices such as red pepper can help curb hunger. Other
spices such as turmeric, curry powder, ginger and chili
powder may have a similar effect. So be generous with
your spices. You’ll have an additional kick to your meal and
skip the late-afternoon hunger pangs.
4. The foods you crave won’t satisfy. It’s tempting to think a
frosted scone or piece of toast is your ticket to a full stomach.
In fact, foods made up of refined carbohydrates and
a lot of sugar metabolize quickly, leaving you hungry and
craving more food. Instead, reach for foods that are high in
protein and low in carbohydrates. Here again, Muuna cottage
cheese can come to the rescue with up to 19 grams of
protein and just 4 grams of carbs per serving.
5. It’s all in your mind. A lot of times our mind plays tricks
on us. Those late-afternoon hunger cravings might not be
the work of an empty stomach, but rather, a brain that’s
been programmed to tell you to grab a sugary snack at
a certain time. The feeling will pass and eventually you’ll
break out of the habit.
If your hunger pangs persist, be sure to have high-protein
snacks on hand like rich and creamy Muuna cottage
cheese. Loaded with protein and containing calcium, potassium
and probiotics, it’s a delicious and nutritious way to
keep you going throughout the day.
